Chevy Camaro Sales Post Lowest First Quarter Results In A Decade

Earlier this year, the Chevy Camaro had its worst-ever first-quarter sales performance in a decade, per a GM Authority analysis. The iconic Bow Tie Muscle only sold just 7,089 units during Q1 of the 2021 calendar year, nearly 100 fewer units than were sold in Q1 of the 2020 calendar year, during which 7,185 units were sold.

It should be noted that there were no availability issues affecting sales performance during this time.

Looking over first-quarter Chevy Camaro sales for the past decade, we find the model’s best sales performance in the 2012 calendar year, during which 21,924 units were sold. Since then, sales have slid considerably, in particular between the 2017 calendar year and 2020 calendar year. The biggest year-over-year Q1 sales difference in the last 10 years was between the 2019 calendar year and 2020 calendar, with 12,084 units sold during the former, and 7,185 units sold during the latter, a difference of 4,899 units.

Chevrolet Camaro Q1 Sales Performance
Year Q1
2021 7,089
2020 7,185
2019 12,084
2018 11,792
2017 15,298
2016 18,581
2015 17,320
2014 19,568
2013 19,198
2012 21,924
2011 19,972
2010 20,757

As discussed in a previously in a GM Authority analysis, the Chevy Camaro’s decline in sales performance can be attributed to a variety of contributing factors, such as higher prices for the sixth-generation model, which may have driven price-conscious buyers to more affordable models from Dodge and Ford. To that point, Chevy Camaro sales were behind those for the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang during the fourth quarter of the 2020 calendar year, with 7,549 units sold compared to 13,453 units for the Ford Mustang and 14,605 units for the Dodge Challenger.

The 2019 model refresh sought to address this with a new trim level structure and broader pricing spectrum, including a $2,000 price reduction for mid-level LT models when compared to the 2018 model year. The introduction of the Camaro LT1 for the 2020 model year also helped to bridge the gap to the more-powerful SS trim.

Other factors that may be impacting Chevy Camaro sales are the interior, which has been criticized for its low visibility, perceived low-quality dash and instrument panel, and low-quality materials, as well as the lack of clear styling differences between the sixth-generation model and fifth-generation model.

For the moment, the future of the Chevy Camaro nameplate is uncertain, with no seventh-generation model in the works. As GM Authority was the first to report, the discontinuation timeline for the current sixth-gen model is a moving target, with no firm date with regard to when the current generation will sunset.

There hasn’t been a reasonable supply of any car I’ve been interested in, and that includes the Camaro, this year.
Just because there were a few Camaros for sale doesn’t mean dealers were interested in making a deal.

    1. I agree, this is a GM lie! We ordered a 2SS convertible 9 weeks ago, now they say they wont make anymore 2021 models because they are “retooling” for the 2022 models. I called every dealer in the midwest who had one showing, on Chevrolet.com site, they had one in stock. All of the good looking ones were already sold, the others were just down right ugly! So we were willing to spend more money and go for the ZL1, the price on the website was wrong, the dealer jacked the price up $10,000 just because there is a shortage and they can do it! Twll me there hasn’t been an availability issue!

Just remember these fools. when you buy your next car. GM doesn’t advertise the Camaro what do you expect. It’s a vette in a metal body and cheaper. I have owned over 1300 cars and GM has to to the bottom of the list. Spend your elsewhere.

  3. Whose ready to see the corvette in nascar? Lol. How about nascar just converts completely to the craftsman truck series because trucks are all that will be left soon. Or maybe just quietly race teslas in a circle. The world is getting more and more boring everyday. If they get rid of barra, the camaro could at least go out with a bang. Im not even a gm guy, but it’s sad to see all the legends dying. They could at least have a lowered 2 door tahoe ss or something…

  4. No real surprise given the Camaro ZL1 has less power than it’s rivals, the GT 500 effectively stole the ZL1’s thunder. I think it’s fair to assume the C8 cut into the Camaro numbers a little as well. IMO it’s time to give the Camaro some love, I really like the Camaro and it deserves to stick around for many years to come.

    1. Have you seen the GT500 prices? You barely find any under $100k and that’s without the track package. That’s $25k more than a ZL1. And the GT500 with track package is only slightly faster on a track than the ZL1 1LE

I’m in this boat. Ordered my car in February and with the plant shut down for weeks, my car didn’t make it for the 2021 model year. I had to change my order for a 2022. Every similar car sitting on dealer lots was scooped up within a couple weeks time.

Lansing just started buttoning up cars that were missing microchips just a couple weeks ago. Those are slowly starting to trickle in. Even so, most are spoken for by people desperate to get their hands on one.

  11. Without a doubt the Camaro is the most poorly marketed underappreciated vehicle in the GM lineup. The failure of this vehicle can be directly attributed to how horrible GM’s marketing division is. If the Camaro was in the Dodge vehicle lineup you’d have amazing commercials of burnouts and screaming turns and straight away shots from the Ring in Germany and sales would not be where they are today.. In fact, I’m willing to take on the advertising for this vehicle for 6 months because there’s nothing to lose, except the Camaro.

    1. Also it doesn’t help when magazines say its hard to see out of. Which is not true. I seen many videos of people driving them and stating there is no issue just have to get use to it like any new car. I agree, i test drove a 2lt earlier and had no issue looking out of it. Yes its hard to back up looking out the back window but you have a back up camera. No different than driving a SUV or CUV. I can’t see out the back of my Terrain but with the camera its no issue to park at all.

      1. I couldn’t agree more Joe. When I first got in the Camaro in 2017, it seemed claustrophobic. Ended up buying a Fiftieth Anniversary edition, and don’t even notice that anymore. Visibility is fine, and with the backup camera, and lane change assist, no problems. It’s simply a matter of getting used to the car. Many low sports cars give the same sensation at first.
As for the small rear seat room, and trunk space, I didn’t buy a sports car for those things, and use my larger sports sedan when needed.

GM is letting an excellent car with great handling and performance thats affordable just die.

Even before the big chip shortage, think back; when was the last time anyone saw a TV advertisement for the Camaro? Or even just a mention of the Camaro in any ad? That carline has to be the best-kept secret in the automotive world, certainly at gm.

Nobody will look to buy a car they think had already been discontinued years ago.

  14. The 6th Gen Camaro is one of the biggest flops/missed opportunities in the Automotive world. Poor styling, visibility, marketing, availability, and value (Except LT1 trim). Chevy created a very fast car that nobody wants to drive. As a life long Chevy fan–my first car being a Camaro– I can’t pull the trigger on one due to the glaring issues the car/GM has. I can sacrifice a little speed for a TON more comfort, style, and drivability with A Dodge Challenger.

The other side of things is no longer do you need a Chevy powerplant to go fast. The HEMI lineup and Coyotes may have some quirks but are all equally powerful now. There is literally no reason to get a Camaro unless you’re so stuck in your ways you can’t venture from GM products. I use to boast Chevy V8s were the best in the world, and at times is still true. However 2nd and 3rd place are so close it’s not worth so much of a sacrifice anymore. A 12 second car for $35k (LT1 Trim) is still the best value V8 car right now, but goodluck finding one!

    1. I want a good handling coupe, not a fake coupe, a real coupe. not like how the germans called there 4 doors coupes. Dodge’s vehicles are boats and a 20 year chasis which sucks. Mustang is ugly to me.I It always has been and still a girls car. The camaro would have picked up sales if it wasn’t for Covid. Dealers were not able to get them, computer chip crisis is the biggest issue right now and maybe until 2022. If inflation gets way out of control we will then we have another issue, otherwise sales will be strong.
Many don’t want sport cars anymore but there a group who still do. I’m one of them and once 2022 get going i have money in my pocket burning to order one. I will also be ordering a manual because today its the best
      theft device there is.

Through the pandemic credit card debts became the lowest in 50 years. Many people have disposable income now and what to buy toys. Try to find a boat, waverunner, people are buying toys if they are available and a camaro is a toy more people seem to want.

There are like 8 or 9 Chevy dealers here which mean most never have a single one for sale. In contrary there are dozens of challengers and mustangs at dealers here. How do you sell a car as well as cars that are in stock when you never stock Camaro’s? This is not a COVID thing as it’s been going on for years. I had to travel to get my Camaro.

  16. I switched to BMW so none of GM’s games concerns me anymore. Besides, Chevrolet does not have a car in their line-up that can keep up with a BMW M5. Twin turbo V8’s are the only way to go. The M5 is the primary reason Chevrolet had to bring out the C8. They were tired seeing their halo car coming in last place in the buff magazine tests and out in the public.

    Reply
    1. I’m sorry, Greg, but what?! I’m pretty sure that Chevy wasn’t thinking of the M5 when they developed the C8. Scratch that, I know they weren’t. They’re not even close to the same thing. The only thing the C7 had in common with an M Series was that they were both front engine. They were looking at Porsche.

      1. My NASCAR team job of 28 years with the same big outfit had me quite often in close contact with many of GM’s top engineers and one of them told me that at the time while we were watching an engine on the dyno run. The M5 is a true 200MPH car, granted it’s a 4-door but it will outperform even the C8 on the track. Just look up some Nurburgring lap times. I’m sure Chevrolet is working on a special version to turn that around but it’s the way it is right now

Since 2000 “German engineering” is best enjoyed before the warranty runs out. If you don’t believe that explain resale values. My inlaws have sentimental attachment to some older German cars & the AAA tow truck driver 🙂

  20. Let’s get some things straight.

#1 production issues have played a major roll here.

#2 the Camaro as well as the Mustang sell a fraction of the cars they once did.

#3 these are not cheap cars. In many cases people pay just a little more for the Corvette.

#4 cut the crap on the hard to see out of, crappy interiors and cramped back seats as all these cars are like this and have been this way before. These are the nature of a performance coupe.

Most of the performance market has gone to trucks and Wrangle. Soon many will go to the Bronco. GM need to address this soon as they have nothing to challenge the rise of Wrangler or Bronco.

    Reply
    1. Let’s straighten you out a little more.

#1 You are 100% right with production issues playing a major role, as in production of advertising segments! When is the last time you saw a Camaro ad either on TV or the radio?

#2 You can look at “numbers” all day long, go out and take a drive. You see more Mustangs/Challengers than any other sports car on the road.

#3 Minus the LT1 trim like the other guy stated, the SS variants are too expensive for what you get inside. The SS tag is a “money sink” for out of touch boomers.

#4 The interiors are Junk, and lack of visibility is a REAL issue. Do you even own one of these cars? The windshield is the smallest in any camaro. My Iroc had more useable space than a 5th/6th Gen camaro. 4th Gen cars look like boats compared to these cars.

gm can’t get away with stuffing powerful V8s in ugly cars and expect them to sell anymore.

      Reply
      1. #2 none of these cars come close to what they used to sell. They are dying.

#3 your iron was the exception as it was a very large car that today would not come close to passing crash standards.

the visibility is still better than most of these cars in past trim. Early 70’s f body and Mustangs were horrid to see out of. That is why we learned to use mirrors.

  24. I purchased a used 2020 Camaro 1SS that I fell in love with. Unfortunately it didn’t have everything that I wanted so was planning on ordering a 2022. But I got discouraged with the factory shut downs and chip shortage wondering if I was even going to be able to order one. I kept checking Car gurus and TrueCar for anything new and I kept building on the Chevrolet web site. I found a base LT1 new no options for $36k that the dealer wouldn’t sell for MSRP and jacked up price to $44k. This is now during the skyrocketing used car price era. Luckily I found a 2021 LT1 in transit to a dealer 100 miles away. After some negotiations we agreed on MSRP for the LT1 and $40k for my trade. I could’ve gotten $43k w Vroom but for convenience I took the offer. I’m now the proud owner of a White 2021 LT1 loaded exactly how I built it. I considered myself extremely lucky to find what I had built and been able to purchase it just for MSRP. As I was looking there were other 1SS, 2SS or 1LE’s listed in transit but were all over $50k w dealer markup. If anyone is interested my car was built in 2/2021 so there is hope that more 2021 Camaro’s are on the way after being retrofitted with chips. Interested buyers would be helped by using the build it option on Chevrolet.com and checking inventory for cars in transit to dealers to make a deal.

  25. I was a GM person all my life until I bought 3 lemons but the 2011 Camaro SS was the worse. The manual transmission was rebuilt 3 times and it still wasn’t right then there was a smell of burnt engine oil with no leaks and they said the rear main seal needed to be replaced then the rear differential had a grown when turning so the fluid needed to be replaced and the axle seals were replaced to deal with synthetic fluid. I also had paint issues and got tired of this car real fast so GM gave me money to buy another lemon which I sold and finally bought foreign. The car was not driven in the winter and it spent it’s short life with me for only a year. FYI I just bought a Scat Pack Wide Body and have not had any issues plus I get nothing but compliments everywhere I go. Just so you know I was a GM mechanic for 40 plus year and have seen it all and now that my Tahoe needs a air bag recall since February of this year with no fix yet plus I just replaced a cracked dash because GM says it not a safety item just infuriates me. Believe me I could go on all day and every car has it’s problems but I guess that I have had enough! And that’s one of the reasons why they can’t sell there vehicles.

Camaro sales dropping like a rock because the “we know better than the customer does” engineers won’t change what the customer has been complaining about since the return of the car as a 2010 model year! I always thought the purpose of an auto manufacturer was to build vehicles people would buy, and listen to the customer/potential buyer as to what needs fixed in order to increase sales. The Camaro corral of designers and engineers have decided the car is more important to them than it is to the customer. Nowadays, the mustang and challenger have kicked it up a notch and created what people actually ARE buying. Wake up Mary! Even though the Camaro has awesome performance compared to the competition, they have ignored the customer who might buy the car by not fixing the car.

Things I’m not crazy about include the cramped back seat and poor visibility. But the deal breaker for me is the styling. To me it looks more like something out of a SciFi movie than it does a classic Camaro. If GM is going to do one more iteration of it, please make it look more like the classic Camaro. If you did that, I’d give up on my Challenger Hellcat plans and get the Camaro. The Challenger isn’t available as a convertible, but so much else about it speaks directly to the teenager I was during the 1970’s. So does the Camaro, except it doesn’t look like a Camaro to me. 37. GM has ZERO marketing……their M.O. is to use these numbers to let this car/platform die, justified by lack of sales/cost issues…..self-inflicted in my opinion. Just look what happened to the sedans…all that’s left is the Malibu and a few Cadillacs, that will be gone by 2023.
Just when they REALLY have achieved cars worthy of comparison with the likes of Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, et al, they have no clue how to market them. Why do Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Dodge, still have sedans!?!? THEY MARKET THEM and are comfortable with their sales volumes…..when was the last time you saw a commercial or a print ad for the Camaro? Impala? Lacrosse? Malibu? For months the only Chevy commercials you saw were those stupid JD power truck commercials that eventually became laughable.
Look back at the Chevy ads in the 60s-70s, performance SOLD CARS. in 1969, Chevy sold over 900 THOUSAND B-Body cars alone…….
I sure hope Mark Reuss is reading this, let ME write the damn ads for the Camaro and Caddy CT4 and 5-V black wings, and we’ll turn this thing around before the Camaro becomes an electric crossover…….

    1. Nick Serio,
TV ads are so last century. The Mad Men era is long gone. Many people under 35 don’t even watch TV. Tesla doesn’t even have a marketing dept. and the company has a net worth which is 15X that of GM. Most luxury brands no longer make TV ads.

  39. Poor Chevy can’t seem to attend a party in food timing. The 6th gen camaro was grate everyone was excited to see the car back in production, but it had its flaws, and the biggest was visibility. The view behind the steering wheel was bad and the rear view was even worse. But we all still loved the car and then there was the new design which added more power, less weight and also less visibility. The Camaro is a Chevy icon and it’s too bad GM didn’t try to make the car better by listening to all of the people who like the car but could see themselves behind the wheel because it just didn’t fit them. I just don’t thing electrification is the answer, they should have made an effort to redesign the car from the inside out I don’t thing anyone wants an electric camaro even Ford has the Mustang and an electrified version of it not a full on replacement, they have given the customer the chance at having the muscle car and a electric one that looks like it but very different. Forcing customer to take what you give them will result in you losing more customers like you have with the Dodge boys Hemi’s,Hellcats and Jeeps haven’t you learned anything from The Chevy SS a car that could have been so much more for Chevy and the Cadillac CT6 which also was o great vehicle the was not marketed properly and the axed, wake up GM please

  41. The Camaro has had the same old bland interior for 10 years now. Color choices are awful. Wheel choices are just so so. Chevy needs to bring their game up a bit regarding the camaro. I like the LT1. Mechanically the car is great and comes with a manual trans unlike corvette.
Why not strip the LT1 even more, get rid of Power windows, A/C, power locks, remote trunk lid, tilt wheel, maybe even a radio delete. Just like the old days. Something different for sure I’d buy then, maybe others also.

    1. You’re living too much in the past. Buyers as a rule don’t want stripped down models
today. As for color choices, Camaro has a decent variety, as good as any sports car.
In general, auto industry color choices are quite bland now, compared with decades past, Just look around any large parking lot. Wheel choices are ok, just don’t give me black.

    2. I bought mine for this reason. Super simple & understated. Handling, power. I need nothing more.

  42. Chevy borrowed a nice looking design from the 60’s, updated it nicely, then progressively made it look like an overweight pig. Too bad GM didn’t allow Buick to produce the Avista; It would have made the Camaro die on the vine 4 years ago.

  43. The only reason i choose to be attached to Chevrolet; The current last 2 generations of Camaro got body lines from the 1968 Chevelle!
