Mary Barra really should have retooled the Orion, Michigan plant to make a competitive subcompact plus to replace the ICE Sonic. The Bolt is an overpriced disposable appliance of a vehicle. If the future for electric is so bright why can’t they give these cars away. The only way they can move BEVs is by giving rich people free money. Disgusting state of affairs perpetuated by the Democrats agenda to falsely prop up the tech industry.
don’t worry. trump will be back in the white house by august.
GM’s BEV2 platform may have been competitive in 2017 but it’s outdated technology now. Add the battery fires that received plenty of press and it’s no wonder gm needs heavy discounts to move them. Hopefully Ultium can turn things around.
It won’t… The energy density of a lithium battery is chemically limited. No amount of empty promises will increase the range or convenience of a lithium based battery.
You talk as if Lithium is the only thing in these batteries. It’s not. Lithium is only one part of the puzzle. There are new chemistries developing with mixed oxide cathodes that increase the cell voltage along with reducing the amount of lithium/cobalt needed. Also how the battery is interconnected is changing reducing resistance helping with efficiency and all together producing batteries that are cheaper and have a longer range.
Isn’t nickel being pushed more than cobalt now? Nickel is even less efficient of a cathode material than Cobalt, but it is much cheaper… Regardless of the exact chemistry, the basic principles of a lithium based BEV are the same… looking towards a practical future hydrogen is more energy dense and probably more sustainable.
And Hydrogen is not practical for the everyday vehicle. It’s far more useful for long haul trucks.
It could be more practical than BEV if we dumped billions of “free” tax payer dollars into it like the Democrats propose to do with electric… BEVs are garbage… Literally disposable tech. Empty to full times in a hydrogen vehicle are substantially shorter then charging a battery.
It’s far far far cheaper to charge an electric and build out the charging infrastructure than it is to build out the Hydrogen infrastructure. You can charge an electric anywhere. You can’t with Hydrogen.
That’s a pure mindless consumer attitude right there. Really feeding that parable of the democracy of goods logic right there. This is exactly the reason BEVs shouldn’t get taxpayer dollars to build an infrastructure…. The better technology will win in the end, let the market decide.
GM already sees the potential of BEVs and Hydrogen and is helping build out both. GM sees it’s far easier to introduce hydrogen where it’s far more needed in Trains, plains, and Long haul vehicles. It’s easier to build out the Hydrogen networks at HUBs Where Trains, Plains, and Trucks congregate.
Hydrogen has been “THE FUEL OF THE FUTURE” for the past 60 years at least. The number of cars leased in the States is next to nothing. And none of them can be even shoved down consumer’s throats without free fuel for 3 years.
Under the best of conditions Hydrogen is triple the cost of gasoline….This is why so few manufacturers (other than Orientals) have gone for Hydrogen in a big way.
In this country, the very dangerous Hydrogen Dispenseries (the neighborhood gets damaged when they explode) – the danger comes from the 10,000 pounds/square inch required – Hydrogen is otherwise about the same danger level as Gasoline – but that particular fact is an irrelevancy when your property gets in the way of an exploding dispensery.
Electrics (some brands more trauma prone than others) have their own dangers occasionally, but they obviously are more than manageable.
Hydrogen is more energy dense and has a significantly smaller carbon footprint. Its far better tech then lithium batteries. Battery cars have been around far longer then hydrogen cars…please give me an example of a hydrogen fuel disaster resulting in substantial loss of life in the US… Bet you can’t.
Battery cars sucked 100 years ago and they still suck now. Also, oriental is a type of rug not a group of people. Youre a sheep 🐑🐑 wake up. Also, gm has hydrogen tech… Just not available to the public. Enjoy your 💩🎁 Bolt.
California had a dispensery explode, and then also had the manufacturing plant supplying that dispensery explode.
Since CO2 is a plant food – I wouldn’t want to starve the Amazon Rain Forrest of needed nutrients – since they are basically the planet’s lungs.
Hydrogen is typically reformed from either coal or natural gas, so there isn’t any huge amount of ‘green house gasses’ saved
The plant where damage was done to the neighborhood was in Norway. 2 minor injuries.
This is an attractive deal. Possibly the time to trade in my 2014 Cadillac ELR. I have 3 cars, but want to keep one plug-in-hybrid (2019 volt) for long trips and vacations…. I like my 2017 bolt. Might be time to purchase a 2021 and retire the ELR – which was a very good car.
If you want to sell your ELR you may want to try doing a private sell through the GM EV Buy-Sell group on Facebook before going through dealer.
I think my Nephew is going to Nix the deal. He is so enamored with my 89,000 mile ELR (and pays for the insurance on all 3 cars PLUS 1/2 the maintenance) that he says to not get rid of that admittedly special car. I think he likes it so much since when he drives it, so he says, it gives him status since the car still turns heads…
Since he pays so much money toward the expense of the 3 cars – and I don’t want to lose his CA$H, he’ll Defacto overrule me.. Haha….
That said, the comment about the seats being crappy (My 2017 has the plane jane LT cloth seats – they may not look all that great but they are easy to clean, and comfortable on 4 hour trips) – as I’ve totally expended the battery range several times. The overly Plastic interior is also serviceable and easy to clean..
Its the modern equivalent of the 1959 Chevy Biscayne my family had purchased used when I was a little kid. Now THERE was a cheaply produced car. 230 cubic inch 6 cyl, 3 on the tree, no power steering, brakes, nor windows – all of which features every bolt has as standard – and keyless ignition, remote start (great for preheating or cooling), and power door locks were not available on the bare bones Biscayne. Also, like most cars today, there is very little spent for maintenance – that incidentally is why my nephew doesn’t want to get rid of the ELR, since there are NO engine or transmission expenses for the foreseeable future other than an oil change every 2 years.
Regarding the Bolt ev; Its just a very reliable, pretty much care free Chevy… I have 67,000 miles on my 2017 Bolt ev with no expenses other than tire replacement. Refueling cost in 3 out of 4 seasons is $1 a gallon equivalent.
Retired the 2017 Bolt ev in lieu of the ELR.. Had 67,000 miles on it, and now was the time to trade up since used car prices are high, and EUV prices are reasonable…
I didn’t like the EUV when described on-line – but seeing it in person, and getting my tape measure out to find it is 1/2 ” wider in the cargo area suddenly made the vehicle very attractive to this bicycle rider. Seems like they also made the 2022’s have a somewhat more upscale interior.
Obsolete and ugly!
At least partially designed in Korea – it has Oriental Styling. It took a while for this Occidental to get used to it, but in its own way it is an attractive little puddle jumper, and with 200 hp (and a super-beefy gearbox) it is if anything over-powered (the tires squeal when pushed) and since it is running well below its design limits you NEVER hear the motor or gearbox, other than a bit of inverter whine when accelerating.
Obsolete is relative – Until Chevy starts selling the almost Identical EUV, it is their FLAGSHIP electric product in North America.
2022 Bolt and 2022 Bolt EUV are on dealer lots now.
Nebula : Just bought a new 2022 Bolt EUV this afternoon. Dropping off the check tomorrow. Bolt ev’s in this area – if they are not 2022’s are generally not available, and the huge amounts of cash off are not really that compelling when your see that the MSRP of the 2021 bolt ev premier is $42,695.
I obviously don’t need the complementary receptacle installation – so I’m looking forward to my $500 free fast charging credit card in lieu of that.
Yesterday I went to my local Chevy dealer for service work. While there the only car in the showroom was a new Bolt. When I got in, I could not believe that the entire interior was PLASTIC, including the doors, dash and center console. The fabric on the seats was the cheapest possible and very rough to the touch. WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK!!!!!!!
You were sitting in a base 2021.
@ Mark. You are entitled to your opinion. I’ve been in one too and I say otherwise.
What is cash allowance? Is that money in hand or to be applied towards car purchase or something else?
No one really knows… They should just lower the MSRP on these to like 25k… They really aren’t worth a cent more than that.
