Toyota has pulled the sheets on the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition, an off-roader variant of the Tacoma pickup truck set to rival the Chevy Colorado Z71 and GMC Canyon AT4.
The Tacoma Trail Edition was first introduced last year, and returns for the 2022 model year. The special edition vehicle is based on the the Tacoma SR5, and is only offered in a Double Cab body configuration
One of more important upgrades is a suspension lift up front and in the rear. New coil springs up front raise the truck 1.1 inches, while a new spacer between the rear axle housing and leaf springs in back add 0.5 inches.
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition also deletes the front air dam. Put it all together, and the truck offers an approach angle of 34 degrees, a departure angle of 23.6 degrees, and a breakover angle of 26.4 degrees. Underbody protection is provided with TRD Off-Road skid plates.
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition also comes with a standard locking rear differential. Making the go is a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 producing 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. The Tacoma Tow Package is standard, with max towing rated at 6,400 pounds.
As for the exterior and styling, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition is offered in four paint colors, including a new hue dubbed Lunar Rock. Black badging adorns the body panels, while a TRD Pro grille is found up front with bronze accenting. The bronze finish continues with the wheels, which offer an extra 0.5 inches in track width. Goodyear all-terrain rubber provides the traction.
Inside the cabin, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition is equipped with a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with two-way lumbar support, dual-zone climate control, and all-weather floor liners. The black fabric also features tan stitching unique to Trail Edition models. An 8-inch infotainment screen is included as well.
Final details include lockable bed storage and a 120-volt power outlet.

Nice how Toyota has gone retro with their trucks….. oh that’s right they just never really up date anything major like brakes engines etc.
I guess you can get away with that if you have a loyal blind following. No need to be best, you just need to be.
the market has spoken. you just don’t like the answer.
McDonald’s sells more Hamburgers than anyone. But that doesn’t mean they are the best burger. Same applies here as selling more trucks holds no bearing on what is the best truck.
The market says nothing.
Lol what? Someone sounds mad that their ZR2 got stuck in the sand while the Tacomas whipped sand all over them.
Say what you want but the recipe works, GM failed to overtake the segment per usual. The only truck that’s outdated is the Colorado/Canyon’s dollar general/great value brand styling and interior.
You put both of these trucks next to a Tacoma and 10/10 would go for the Tacoma.
Just tires of pulling Taco’s out of the sand.
Toyota adds a new color and calls it a new truck though it is still the same truck since 12 years plus ago. But if you have a lot of captive fools you can sell to how can you not blame them for getting way with it.
The Toyota isn’t even in the same league as the ZR2. The ZR2 has DSSV shocks, 308 hp, front and back locking diffs, Good Year Duratrack tires etc.
Having owned two Tacoma’s, a Rubicon, a ZR2, amongst others your comment is wayyy off base. I love both taco and zr2 but my TRD was nowhere near as capable as my ZR2 offroad was. Not even in the same ballpark. I’ve since sold it, but was by far the most capable offroad vehicle I’ve owned that is still comfortable on road.
It depends who you ask. Toyota has a laughable blind following. The Tacoma is no more reliable than the twins, always finishes at the bottom of the pack in comparison tests from car and truck testers and has an interior that looks ripped out from a Corolla with much worse truck capabilities in terms of towing and hauling. So as long as you aren’t a kool aid drinking fan boy the higher percentage will go with the GM twins. The dash is a little plasticy but laid out much better and the GMC versions have the soft stitched dash with a much better seating position than the sports car on the floor seating position of the tacoma. Then they drive them and see the lack of torque, confused transmission and ugly handling and floaty drive and they will run to GM.
I would love to see the stats on Tacoma buyers that are repeat buyers or what the reason was as I bet many note a perceived reliability that is just no longer there.
Either way, tacoma sales aren’t because it is the better truck in most ways, it is just the most familiar. Same reason people buy BFG KO tires, they aren’t at all a top performer, just a familiar name and image…
Hard to find repeat buyers – those old tacos only have 200,000 miles. Not time to buy another one yet.
You are LOL’ing what? Your 10/10 would pick Tacoma statement is BS. How do I know? I would never, ever pick Tacoma over Colorado/Canyon, which makes you wrong.
Having driven both it’s not even close. The taco is noisy, uncomfortable and underpowered. The interior isn’t any better either. Sure it may be more reliable but that isn’t the only reason we buy a truck. Can’t tow as much either.
Not any more reliable any more, have you seen the complaints on the forums? This isn’t 1980, Toyota has fallen from grace in terms of reliability and the competition has caught up…
Toyota seems to want to retain focus on building trucks that actually work as trucks. GM going electric and Metro-male, retaining tough look, but doing things like adding pushbutton transmissions and other urban amenities – ever try to downshift a pushbutton on the dash? Two companies with two beliefs of where the market is going.
John there is a shifter in both the Colorado and Canyon.
If you got a Bit$h at least use something legit.
Huh? The GM twins have more payload, towing, a deeper and larger bed, more robust drivetrain, and an actual interior laid out in a functional way with larger buttons and knobs. That is the other way around, the Toyota has the push button start, fancy sensors and radars, tiny bed and is geared towards the suburban hipster type. There is a high chance you will find a man bun and skinny jeans with a Tacoma driver than a GM twin driver.
This is all going to change when NIssan brings out the new Frontier in the next few months.
Ah yes, the Taco. 10 year old performance, 15 year old mileage with a price tag $10,000CAD more than GM.
I’ll wait to see what the new Frontier offers before I give up completely on a new truck.
Driving my Taco with skinny jeans and third pedal is amazing! I guess a GM twin driver wouldn’t know?
I curious why they didn’t compare it to the Ford Ranger FX4 or even the Ranger Tremor
The Ranger has 270 hp and 310 lbs of torque
Toyota reminds me of Apple each year they sell the same product in a new shell however they are extremely reliable but then again so is the Ranger
GMC and Chevy are just cheap plastic unreliable garbage and they are ugly lol
I am going to honest I am GM guy but I don’t care for the newer midsize trucks… I don’t like the soft lines, rear window kink, headlights… Why can’t they make the Colorado more Silverado like squared off… When the Silverado is in Trail boss trim it looks awesome like the trucks I remember as a kid… Not only that but with the Silverado ZR2 coming out I can just skip over these trucks and tow, haul and have a nicer interior.
If it works don’t fix it, to all the Toyota haters out there! Although the US GMC and Chevy companies create an awesome product still one can’t deny the Toyota reliability hands down!!
