A sharp-eyed car enthusiast has filmed a 2022 GMC Hummer EV on manufacturer plates rolling down Woodward Avenue in Metro Detroit, giving us a better idea of just how large the battery-electric pickup is in comparison to other vehicles.
This video was uploaded to YouTube by a user with the account name Sinister Coyote 5.0 last week. The footage shows a pre-production version of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 rolling down Woodward Avenue with what is most likely a General Motors employee behind the wheel. While we’ve already covered the Hummer EV extensively, this video gives us a much better feel for the GMC Hummer EV’s large size and commanding road presence.
The driver in this case also appears to have the Extract Mode enabled, as the suspension on this prototype is sitting much higher than it is in most of the official press images. As a result, the Hummer EV is towering above most of the traffic around it.
The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 is set to enter production at the GM Factory Zero plant in Hamtramck, Michigan later this year. With the production start date still some months away, it’s no surprise that passersby seem excited to spot the Hummer on the road well ahead of its official arrival. This prototype also appears more complete than other examples that have been spotted on public roads, featuring full body cladding, production wheels and tires and production LED headlights and taillights. The off-road test prototypes spotted in Salt Lake City for example, did not feature body cladding and were missing other parts and components.
Pricing for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 starts at $112,595. The First Edition models have already been sold out, although customers can still pre-order the lesser EV3X, EV2X and EV2 trim level models.

Right there we saw exactly the mission of the Hummer. We had two guys in a new Mustang get very excited over a EV vehicle. It also showed that the Hummer was not some low speed science experiment too as it showed some acceleration that the Mustang may not have kept up with if he held it open.
This is the kind of things GM needs to do to bring excitement and the reality of what these models will be able to do.
I have to admit I don’t plan to go electric anytime soon but I even get a little excited to see the Hummer do what it can do.
This will be a high profile vehicle that will attract attention in the right places for the right reasons.
I also have been studying the Lyriq interior and it really makes the Tesla look like a rental car. GM really did a nice job on the Lyriq interior. Even that model has made just powering up an event.
You have been studying the Lyriq interior? HAHA! What kind of BS is that? Where did you see one to study? or you mean studying pictures? You can tell the car interior quality from a picture now? Come on kid, cut the BS… You can say the design looks nice from a picture, but no way judge the quality. As for comparison to Tesla, did you notice they took the shifter stalk right from Tesla on the Lyriq? Well Tesla took it from Mercedes originally, its a great choice for Lyriq too, but now Teslas have no shifter, they use AI to determine direction most of the time.
GM fans like you are so clueless, first of all, on an EV there are 4 things that matter most, Range, Charging, Efficiency, and Acceleration, I am willing to bet you Lyriq loses on all important EV guidelines to Tesla. Tesla’s program is all about Simple, Simple, Simple, and getting the EV cost down and capability up. Thats why Tesla outsells the entire Cadillac brand, and Tesla really only has 2 models to sell in 2021, maybe 3 if you include the S Plaid, but that is only a few sales.
LOL. Tesla is not a Lux brand they are a premium brand, their interiors will not match Cadillac or other Lux brands. Their quality is still questionable as well.
As much as I like Tesla as a tech company they still have a way to go.
Also if you pay attention Tesla still has a touch sensitive shifter hidden on the console just incase their AI fails to shift properly.
Of course, but Tesla is the elephant in the room when it comes to EV’s ,and when it comes to quality, Tesla has improved a lot. My Y had a few issues on delivery, but once those were rectified it has been great. But when it comes to Cadillacs interiors (current escalade or XT6) they are not perfect, and not quite what I would call luxury. For luxury I expect better quality of switchgear, and features like massaging seats. The XT6 is embarrassingly bad, and the Escalade better but not great, I think the Lincoln might still be a bit better even though it’s the older model. This comes down to philosophy, Tesla cuts parts out completely so save cost, GM puts in cheap components from their trucks. Which do you prefer? Personally I have always been a Tesla naysayer, and bought my Y to prove how bad they are, but you know what, after owning the Y for a while, I like it, and can see some genius in Tesla’s philosophy. I am getting a first edition Hummer Ev too, but if it has the same plastics as my other GM trucks, I will be disappointed. There is no reason to put such cheap components into a $113K halo vehicle.
You spent over $100K to prove how bad your purchase was? That seems either not true or foolish. Let us know.
The devil is in the details.
Even in photos you can see much more detail and content.
When it comes to EV products in the future there will be much more to it than parlor tricks with 0-60.
Musk has skated by with folks like you falling for his BS.
At the Lyriq price point they will offer much.
The devil is in the details, thats right. Tesla are quicker, go further on a charge, charge faster, have better tech, and use less energy per mile, and also more content of Tesla 3 and Y are made in America, and the money goes to an American corporation. Teslas are also more fun to drive than anything GM has made in the past,
Musk has skated by with people like me falling for BS? really? I cannot stand Musk, and usually argue the other side of this. Do you really believe that though? Dude, you are in some kind of la la land, Tesla is increasing sales at a rate of over 50% PER YEAR over the last 8 years, and just Tesla’s stock gain this week is equal to the total market cap of GM.
I have owned lots of GM products over the years, Including a CTS-V, and Z06Corvette, I would not buy that Junk any more. My CTS-V started leaking oil out the back of the engine block at 8000 miles (porosity in the casting GM’s fix was to coat the back of the block with JB weld) I liked my Corvette, but only kept it 2 years and never looked at another one.
I started out buying a Tesla as a naysayer, expecting to not like it, but I was wrong and man enough to admit it. Once I got through the initial teething pains I have liked my Y, and its way more sporty than any crossover should be. Not a 1 trick pony, yes it goes 0-60 quick, but also 30-70 on the freeway ramps, and very tight steering, and handling, I did not think that was possible in a crossover. Our E-Tron is more floaty like the Lyriq will be, a big heavy boat, but Cadillac will go cheap on seats, suspension and brakes, so the Audi will still out perform the Lyriq.
Absolutely!!
its driven by Al Oppenheiser
The one and only.
I caught that too.
First of all for the writer, that is not Extract Mode, as Extract Mode tops out the suspension and can only be used at slow speeds. If you were in Extract mode at speed on the road and hit a bump you would likely lose control when the suspension hits the stops. This is the 12″ ground clearance setting, Adrenaline mode maybe?
Pretty awesome looking truck, and that is the first all up validation model that has been seen with all visually production components. Looks like GM is right on time with development.
All Teslas are ugly and have questionable quality. Donovan is the perfect definition of Tesla Sheeple.
I can agree with that, Tesla only has 1 descent looking model, that is the S. Tesla’s technical chops however are the best in the EV industry. Once you drive a Tesla for a while, you realize what you have been missing.
Another 3 to 4 months and it will be Production Time!!!!!!
Salable production models start production in September, and deliveries soon after, baring any supplier issues.
That Cyber truck from Tesla is a monstrosity. The Hummer is a head turner.
No doubt about that, Cybertruck is ugly, but unique and over 1 million people placed reservations for it, 10X as many as reserved the F150 EV, so we will have to wait and see, I think Tesla will sell all the Cybertruck’s they can build, just like the 3 and Y….but won’t be selling one to me…
With this video as evidence I will say it looks to me that gm has done a top notch job with this Hummer. It looks really good and very appealing.
Wow, can sleep better tonight knowing this. Another oversized vehicle no one needs in regular traffic just you can say look how stupid I was I bought this over priced killer , or should I say even leased, so I can impress you. lol
Finally, a comment I can agree with- thank you “A”. Also did I miss something or are those wheels on the Hummer modestly in proportion with the rest of the vehicle. What gives? Sanity?
