2022 Ford Maverick Compact Pickup Unveiled With $19,995 Base Price

The 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup has made its official debut, arriving with a standard hybrid powertrain and a low base price of just $19,995.

2022 Ford Maverick exterior

Ford says the Maverick is the truck “for people who never knew they wanted a truck,” combining the capability and practicality of a pickup with the fuel efficiency and maneuverability of a crossover. This five passenger, four-door truck comes standard with a 2.5L four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine, which is paired with a CVT and front-wheel-drive. An in-house-designed and manufactured electric traction motor assists the 2.5L engine, combining for a maximum output of 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. This combination offers a standard payload of 1,500 pounds, along with a max towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.

Buyers can also opt for a turbocharged 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder, which makes 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel-drive, while all-wheel-drive is available for extra. An optional 4K Tow Package is also offered, doubling the conventional towing capacity to 4,000 lbs.

Inside, the Ford Maverick will come standard with an eight-inch color touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, along with FordPass Connect onboard Wi-Fi. The truck also comes standard with Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 suite of safety features, which includes standard Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Automatic High Beam Headlamps. Available active safety options include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Centering and Evasive Steering Assist. There are also five standard drive modes, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery and Tow/Haul.

Ford has also integrated some unique storage solutions into the Maverick’s 4.5-foot bed, as well, such as stamped-in slots in the bed for 2x4s or 2x6s, two tie-down points, four D-rings and built-in threaded holes for aftermarket modular solutions.

“The whole bed is a DIY fan’s paradise,” explains Ford engineer Keith Daugherty. “You can buy the bolt-in Ford cargo management system and we’re happy to sell it to you, but if you’re a bit more creative, you can also just go to the hardware store and get some C-channel and bolt it to the bed to make your own solutions.”

The 2022 Ford Maverick will also launch with a limited-run First Edition package, which is based on the range-topping Lariat trim level and adds unique hood and door graphics, gloss black painted roof, a soft tonneau cover, body color door handles and either gloss black 18-inch machined wheels for hybrid models or 17-inch alloys for 2.0L models. The First Edition will be offered in three unique exterior colors, as well, including Carbonized Gray, Area 51 and Rapid Red.

The 2022 Ford Maverick will go on sale in the United States and Canada this fall, with prices starting at $19,995. The pickup will be built at the Ford Hermosillo plant in Mexico alongside the new Ford Bronco Sport crossover. Ford has already launched its online configurator for the Maverick and is accepting reservations for the First Edition model now.

General Motors has no plans that we know of to enter the compact truck market in North America. As of this writing, the smallest pickups offered by GM in the U.S. are the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size trucks.

  1. Should be hugely successful. It’s the spiritual successor to the Courier though, not the Mavarick. The rear license plate is 1971 Riviera-like in that it’s off-centered in the bumper. Ford is obscuring that in the images.

    1. Ford did a good job just got the name WRONG BIG TIME, looks nothing like any Maverick I’ve ever seen and more like a baby Sport Trac which it should have been name. Hopefully it a good vehicle and don’t hurt sales

      1. That’s not going to matter at all. I’m in my mid forties, and I’ve only ever seen a Maverick once or twice. They are from way before my time, and a lot of people much younger than me are buying vehicles now.

      2. People like us may remember the 1970-75 Maverick well, but most people under 50 don’t. Ford has used the name for SUVs in other countries. There’s nothing sacred about the second reskin of the Falcon, the Mustang being the first.

      3. The name won’t hurt this vehicle, but I would have called it an F-100 if Ford wanted to use a heritage name since that was the name of an old compact truck.

        Reply
        1. F-100 signifies “truck”. Ford want’s to sell this to wider audience like moms (as evident in the mktg picture) and graduates. Maverick has wider appeal.

          Reply
        2. The F-100 was full-sized. The F-150 was what was called a “heavy half-ton.”

  2. Rumours of the next gen Chevy Montana compact coming here died off along time ago. Chevy likely could’ve had a compact truck in North America in 2019ish
Funny for how a long time Buick specialized in filling ‘white space’ yet an obvious compact truck never came into the picture for Chevrolet.

      1. Right, but he was talking about “a compact truck in North America” and the GEM platform isn’t designed for that.

    3. Love the fact companies are thinking of making small trucks again. I don’t know why gm or Ford think we want to all drive a truck or large suv the size of a small neighborhood. Being I do not use a truck for work anymore. I myself have been looking at the Ridgeline to replace my truck as I do not tow anything that heavy anymore. Love Fords try I would not buy just because it is said to have a CVT.

  3. i thought all of the experts were telling us this would cost the same as a mid-size truck.

40mpg is pretty incredible. too bad gm ditched hybrids and went all in on electrics with all of their drawbacks.

if you are a young active outdoorsy/do-it-yourself person on a budget, this is your vehicle.

    1. steve: I couldn’t agree more! I think the stupidest thing GM has done in the last 10 years is kill the Volt, then kill the plug in hybrid CT6 (they could have at least given that powertrain to the CT4/5). I too think this little truck will sell very well.

      Reply
      1. Nobody wants hybrids. The market is dead. It’s cost prohibitive to have to produce two propulsion systems when we’re at the technological stage (and only getting better) in producing full electric.

        1. I disagree, this $20k hybrid has a range of 500 miles. Find me a battery powered car/truck that can do that. Now price it at $20k.

    2. Ford knocked it out of the park with this one. Hits right on the money for a lot of people. The 40mpg is very nice and will attract a lot of people who dont want a “big gas guzzling truck” (in their mind).

The young active outdoorsy/DIY person is basically exactly this market which is a growing market. This thing is essentially a subaru pick up. As a WRX owner, that is a good thing. A year ago I would have been all over this truck. But now I want a big offroader so missed me but I really like this a lot more than I expected.

  5. The next gen Colorado will blow this away IMHO. Starting MSRP 20k???? That’s still a bit high for a fed vehicle. I can get a 2wd Colorado for 15K new with a more powerful engine. The next gen Colorado will knock the socks off this truck for less. It should also take advantage of the 2.7’s VVL to make almost 35mpg

    1. This doesn’t compete with Colorado. The Ranger competes with Colorado. This is a new smaller class below midsize. The only competitor to this would be the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

      1. And the Honda. I like to call this the truck class for people who need but don’t like trucks.

They want a car like vehicle that can haul something outside.

It is not a bad thing just a different thing. This is more Ford Sport Trac than Ranger. The priority us more on the passengers vs cargo.

      2. It does in terms of MSRP. When you look at gms incentive rate on WT Colorado, they will be the same price, and that’s advantage Colorado. Unless ford offered these for 5k off msrp, which they might, they will be a hard sell to businesses who will be seeing the new colorado with the 2.7 and same or better gas mileage (the hybrid really can’t be 20K and definitely wont go for discount, the entry Maverick will byle the base turbo engine) and will make their decision with their wallet

      1. Autotrader WT 2wd. A cheap truck for sure, but these images of the Maverick are of a 40K version, AWD, and non vinyl seats. The entry Maverick’s only advantage over the entry Colorado will be a true 5 seater. Everything else it performs worse at.

        1. What year did you last look at AutoTrader? Cheapest new Colorado on AutoTrader right now is a 2020 WT at $23,930. Only advantage is 5 seater? Hmm… better mpg, 4 full doors, LED headlights standard. Plus it isn’t even a competitor to anything GM offers. I love my Colorado and wouldn’t even cross shop both. The 2.7L numbers for the Silverado kind of suck, so I’m not sure what makes you think it will be magical in the Colorado, which is much larger than this truck and not a direct competitor anyway.

            2. My Diesel Colorado doesn’t even match the Hybrid Maverick numbers, and it has alot of economy modifications and a tune, There is NO WAY a 2.7L Turbo gas engine is going to get above 30 MPG. It’s just physics.

  7. About what was expected accept the Hybrid.

The base price is a very basic truck with FWD and no independent rear suspension.

The Hybrid can’t be had with AWD.

The XL with options can and will run into the mid $30K range. You can buy a nice LT Colorado 4×4 for that.

The size is not that much smaller and pays the price in rear seat and bed room.

This really is the successor to the Sport Trac than the Ranger.

Being based on a CUV platform it will be much more profitable than the Ranger per unit sold.

The questions is will people really buy this and will it cannibunize Ford CUV sales?

Ford had little to lose here as they were using an existing platform but will this truck succeed where many FWD based trucks have failed in the past? We will just have to watch and see.

We have many here predicting this will be a hit. It may be. But then many of them said if companies just offered wagons they would sell like crazy. Buick, Cadillac and Dodge all tried with good cars and failed.

The redeeming factor is the shared platform here so they can sell in smaller numbers and still justify the profits.

Just to note before the truck shortage the Colorado extra cab base models could be found at some dealers at $19,000. Nice optioned LT2 Colorado 4×4 could be found for $30-34K. 4×2 soon to $27K with V6.

Hybrid on the base models only is a mistake. Will they correct this? Time will tell.

I expect this may do well just because it is a Ford with a loyal following. But I don’t expect it to out sell the Ranger or the GM twins.

It will be interesting just to see where the buyers come from and what models pay the price.

If this does work GM could do one fairly quick. I wish people would drop the Montana as it would never sell here as it is way too small. It is more a long wheel base Sonic size.

    1. Right on the nail C8.r. my question is will this further fuel the American truck craze to the point that if your brand doesn’t offer a truck, forget about it. Few things are more American than the pickup. Will this fuel a truck craze abroad? While working in France for a bit, the majority of France (seriously, the french stereotypes are all based off parisians) are very close to gun toting readnecks who’s favorite vehicles were mustangs and ram trucks. Of you had money, screw Porsche, get a hemi! And the ford ranger was recently reintroduced over there and people were buying them left and right. Will american trucks become the new standard of the worlds automobiles?

    2. GM ended production of Montana in Brazil recently, due to low sales, mainly in the face of competition.
Shortly before, GM made an announcement about the development of a new pickup that will be produced in Brazil, although it is not known if it will be just a derivation of the Tracker to compete with Oroch or a more refined and bigger model to compete with Toro and Maverick.

    3. All good points, but honestly I’d probably just get the FWD. It should do fine in the winter, and even the base truck could pull my boat. With how many people I see driving around in FWD crossovers, I don’t see how this really takes away from whatever they are using those for.
Obviously, if you must have a big truck to tow big things, you won’t be looking at this anyway.

      Reply
      1. The object is to gain from the competition. If Ford take sales from their other CUV models it is not really a gain.

Most people deferred to truck due to RWD. I expect most owners to come from CUV.

I have wondered how this would pull a boat out of the water in FWD. It is not prime to use the front wheels in this case with the load all on the rear wheels. Even with a small boat the drag of the water creates a lot of drag.

        Reply
        1. I’ve used a minivan with the boat in the past. It’s fine.
If it were a huge boat or something, you might have issues, but then I’d use a big truck anyway.

    4. Ford has a tendency to compete with itself: years ago the Flex, Explorer, and Taurus X were all about the same size. The Explorer won, the X died early on, and the Flex had a cult following and hung on for years. My guess: the Escape, Bronco Sport, and Maverick are all on the same platform, and only two will survive. If I were betting money, I’d call the Escape the loser.

      Reply
      1. So the traverse, enclave, xt6, Acadia, xt5… don’t compete against each other? The only difference is looks and a few inches here and there. GM can’t even get SuperCruise in any of their current Cadillac cuvs to justify why it should cost more than the other brands.

        Reply
        1. I’d be more concerned with Chevy competing against itself by slicing and dicing the market so small, which all the makes are. The various GM makes are trying to sell at different price points, so I wonder why Buick has both an Encore and a GX.

  13. Since i love LPG 104 octane propane as my choice of fuel, the optional 2.0 liter turbo engine will have torque over 300 pounds feet when it’s running on propane after we add on the dual fuel LPG fuel injection system. The engine computer will allow the ultra high octane propane to produce a huge power boost, with propane’s 37 percent hydrogen content. It will be interesting to see the base MPG city and Urban fuel mileage ratings with the base FWD version. A 2.5 liter base engine is OK for most drivers and a 2,000 pound towing ability with the base model is good enough for most people. Pickup trucks maintain their value even when 5 or 10 years old. Since this mini truck has no frame, it’s no good for even a small 6 foot snow plow blade, as it will distort the unibody and cause permanent damage.

    1. I doubt many of them will be conscripted for snowplow duty. The Ranger and Colorado will do just fine if a Silverado or F-150 aren’t used.

  14. Honestly, the MPG is a bit disappointing…. Here me out. 40 CITY for the hybrid is expected with a hybrid. 37 combined means that it’s hyw mileage is 34-35…. In a small lightweight Fwd vehicle. Silverado diesel is 33. That’s not much an improvement. I expect the 2.7 turbo to make that much on the new colorado. It’s likely the Maverick Ecoboost will be lucky to make 30. Note, the chevy 2.7 is a more efficient engine than the Ecoboost. The Ecoboost are short stroke high performance engines not optimized for efficiency, the 2.7 is a long stroke with VVl, and silverados so equiped are regually seeing 26 mpg hwy, and the 2.7 isn’t really able to use it’s VVl as it remains largely in the high valve lift mode when cruising at 70. The Colorado should be able to keep it in low valve lift.

    1. You seem to be trying really hard to make this truck seem like it doesn’t make sense.
First of all, comparing it to a $45k Silverado diesel is just completely pointless, and that shouldn’t need any explanation at all.
Secondly, comparing it to a vehicle that isn’t out yet, and we have no idea about the mileage or cost (except that it will cost more and get worse mileage for sure) is even more pointless.

  15. LOL – to all you proclaiming this is the best truck ever and GM is failing. Why aren’t you complaining that this is made in a foreign country? Or is it only GM that is required to produce every model in the US?

    1. I seldom personally complain about gm’s Mexican-made products although I’d prefer that they build products for the US market in the US so I won’t complain about a Mexican Ford. I do, however, loudly and often complain about China. There’s a huge difference.

Mexico is our neighbor and ally with no designs on dominating the world. China is an authoritative regime that openly seeks to became the dominant power in the world and impose communist rule on all. They literally lie, cheat, and steal in their pursuit of that goal. They do all of that to us, to Americans. Everyone knows this. I personally endeavor to not aid them in their mission by studiously avoiding anything Made in China.

      2. I think China is less interested in communism these days than in raw power and economic domination. That’s bad enough.

      3. There’s no harm from Mexico? Really? They’re the ones literally occupy our country, steal the jobs, wealth, change its demographics, culture and the most importantly tilt the political scale therefore pave the way for evil that now anti-American global leftism able to dismantle the social fabric and all the institutions of the country. Yeah Mexico is much better than China!

        1. Duke,

I think your concern is with migration, usually done illegally, of Mexicans into the US. Certainly that is an issue of concern too but my point is Mexico, as a nation, isn’t building up a military to challenge ours and openly planning to also overtake us economically. China is doing that and their reign as the world’s preeminent super power, if that were to occur, would be quite different to live under than the United States’ has been. I don’t think Americans understand the Communist monster they are feeding in their quest for cheap goods. As I see it Mexico poses no similar problem. They have no designs on world domination.

I’d actually like to see every cheap product currently made in China and exported to the US to have its production shifted to Mexico or South America instead. That would starve China, hugely bolster Mexico and their southern neighbors and eliminate the incentive for their citizens to come here, while still keeping cheap goods available that Americans have come to rely on to maintain our standard of living.

I would prefer rwd , but that’s me. I went from S10 to Silverado because 2014 there was only one Chevy truck. Miss my ZQ8 mini truck and so does the wife. Hates driving Silverado because of size.

  19. The bottom line here is the competition is charging full steam ahead with innovative and diverse product lines and GM is just sitting there dead in the water.

    1. General has this thing about not being leader and they are not very good followers. When the do follow they are years down the road and they design their products to compete with the past generation of the competition. Mean while the competition has moved ahead and GM is left with an uncompetitive product.

  22. Funny to read the typical remarks about the Maverick….”it’s not a real truck, the bed is too small, etc….” My favorite though is….”an XL Maverick with options is mid $30’s” Hilarious! If you bother to go build such a truck, add AWD, the 2.0L, the tow pkg, the hard bed cover, etc…the price is….about $28,500!

Many people want utility, but don’t want a Ranger or a Colorado. The size/scope of vehicle appeals to them. It’s not all about the price! As stated before, the retiree crowd will eat these up. Easier to get in and out of, easier to park/fits in garage, lower bed height, etc…

  24. It’s a nice FWD platform used for cars and CUV’s with a open back end, but don’t expect anytime soon to see $20K trucks on the dealers lots.

This week, on line at Jeep dot com, the PU Truck starts at $32k and up to $52k. Searching dealers lots in Orlando, nothing less than $45k.

  25. This kind of vehicle would be perfect for me. I have a 100 mile round trip to work, so fuel economy has to be decent. I need truck like features to support my hunting and fishing habits. Being able to tow a small jon boat or ATV utility trailer is a required feature. I also have a need to haul construction materials as I do a large majority of home improvements myself, ability to haul a 4×8 sheet is great. Cost is a factor; paying 40% of my net pay in child support. Would love to just buy a half ton but could never swing the payment and fuel costs at this time in my life.
