2022 Chevy Tahoe, Suburban Production Dates Revealed

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe and 2022 Chevy Suburban full-size SUVs will go into production on October 4th of this year, GM Authority has learned. Both vehicles are produced at the GM Arlington plant in Texas.

Both the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban ride on the T1 platform that also underpins the 2019 and newer Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, the 2021 GMC Yukon and the 2021 Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV. The Chevy Tahoe and Suburban are essentially the same vehicle, except that the Tahoe measures 210.7 inches from front to back, while the Suburban is 15 inches longer at 225.7 inches bumper-to-bumper.

Both models were overhauled (redesigned and re-engineered) for the 2021 model year, entering their fifth (Tahoe) and 12th (Suburban) generations. The 2022 model year update will include only minor changes, including new colors and small changes to features and content within trim levels.

Both the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and 2021 Chevy Suburban are doing extremely well in the marketplace. In Q1 2021, 23,038 units of the Tahoe and 11,143 units of the Suburban found customers in the United States, for a combined 34,181 units. This collectively places the duo as the undisputed best-seller in the mainstream full-size SUV segment, with the Ford Expedition a distant second at 22,263 units.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban both feature the 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine from the EcoTec3 family as standard. It’s rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The 6.2L V8 L87 is exclusive to the range-topping High Country trim level, where it makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Alternatively, all models except for the Z71 trim offer the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax, which produces 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It’s worth noting that the LM2 is the only diesel engine fitted to any vehicle in this segment. As GM Authority exclusively reported, it accounted for six percent of Tahoe sales and eight percent of Suburban sales as of April 2021.

All three engines are paired with GM’s Hydra-Matic 10L80 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel-drive is standard on all models except for the Z71 trim. Four-wheel-drive is optional on the remaining trim levels.

  1. Since the updated Silverado and Sierra will be getting fully digital cluster options for the top trim versions, I assume that the new Suburban and Tahoe will offer a digital cluster as an option on the top trims as well for their second model year?

    1. Never assume GM will do the sensible thing and offer more content so soon on a redesigned vehicle. It makes sense to us as consumers, but…gm

    2. I hope it becomes a a standalone option. We are RST/Premier trim buyers and do not want all digital gauges. The small screen between the gauges is perfect.

I nearly bought an Explorer ST and full digital cluster was a MAJOR disappointment. It was slow to change modes, only one view didn’t look ugly, and would not default to the only mode I liked. And based on the quality of the rest of the vehicle…. That stupid digital cluster would be something that fails and has to be replaced.

  2. 60% of the market share and you think gm (with the m underlined) is going to change anything?

  3. The FlapCrap Grille was old the first time I saw it and is even older today. lower case gm has certainly found the bottom of the barrel design team. Sadly, these vehicles will leave the scene with a poor quality record and many disappointed X gm owners. gm has certainly lowered the Barra.

    1. Dan, How many Tahoe or Suburban’s have you owned , To have all this bad information ?

      1. Not one because I’ve owned gm all my life. My Silverado woke me up. Drivetrain is good but it’s not an 8 speed thank God but the interior is cheap plastic which has cracked all to hell, just like the Tahoe and Sub Urban. But they did manage to leave the flaps off the front of the truck. Thank God.

  4. Forget bells and whistles, can GM eliminate all the recalls and TSBs associated with the 2021’s which gave the Tahoes and Suburbans biggest market share of the crappiest redesigns ever undertaken.

  5. Will they allow the RST models to get the radar cruise for 22? I vastly prefer the looks of the RST over the Premier, but would like the radar cruise (this is standard on freaking Corolla at this point!). Also, will the RST get the nice looking quad exhaust system? That’s my only gripe about the new trucks.

I prefer the largely analog gauges, and hope they’re a standalone option if they add them. Or at least leave them on the Escalade.

We will likely pick up a diesel RST or Premier once the supply of trucks catches back up.

    1. I’m a Z71 Suburban buyer once the market stabilizes.

GM’s option packages are infuriating. May end up in an Expedition (Timberline?) due to Ford’s better option availability.

      1. I think if we went Ford it would be a Navigator… But the ecoboost engine is a major turn off for us. The 3.0L Duramax diesel is frankly a segment buster… It’s a huge cost savings long term for us, nothing can come close to matching up in fuel costs, even stepping down a level into something like the Telluride.

Ford needs to put their diesel into the Expedition and Navigator last year, they are very much behind the curve on this. And frankly they should be offering the coyote 5.0 as well. We had a 3.5 Ecoboost, it drank fuel when driven like a normal car, and while it was trouble free for the time our family had it, the rest of the car was not, and there was always some weird stuff that felt like it was about to break. Combine that with my experience with th 2020 explorer… I’m gonna probably give Ford a few year to get their business back in order.

  6. will there be super cruise on the 2022 tahoe and/or yukon?

  7. Any word on the 6.2L on LT/RST or any other trim besides High Country. I’m waiting on buying because of all the TSB fixes/ recalls AND lack of 6.2L
I will be towing AND have 5-7 ppl in the truck while doing so, 5.3 just doesn’t cut it. And spending 80k on a High country just for the 6.2 isn’t worth it to me.
Rather a 5.3 with a Whipple if I had to on a LT or RST

  8. I placed an order back in April for a premier Tahoe. Because of the chip shortage, I’m still waiting. Will this shortage be a problem for the 2022’s? Should I just wait and order a 2022?

    1. I’m in the same boat. Ordered a duramax Suburban in April and was told production won’t even start until August with an estimated delivery no earlier than October (likely later). Considering just waiting and ordering a 2022 . Waiting to hear back from our salesperson about production timelines for 2022.

      1. Ordered a Premier with a tow package in May. have not heard a word on when to expect to receive it.

  9. Will the GMC Yukon be expected to be put in production at the same time?
I haven’t seen any dates related to the Yukon but I know they share some production lines.

  10. The Z71 should have the limited-slip differential. Right now the only way to get that is with the GMC Yukon AT4, and is not available at all if you want a sunroof — which costs an extra 7k because it is only offered in a bundle with a bunch of useless junk.

  11. Are any 2022 Tahoe’s with the diesel motor being produces currently? We submitted our order in July of 2021 and it still haven’t even been assigned a production line. It’s waiting in 1100 status.
