The upcoming 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss was just caught undergoing some off-road testing, giving us an early look at the dirt-duty pickup truck.
As we can see in these new spy photos, there are actually two 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss prototypes undergoing off-road testing here. The all-new GMC Hummer EV pickup is also seen testing alongside the internal-combustion Chevy pickups.
The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss prototypes were spotted tearing it up in the rough stuff, putting the off-road equipment to task with steep climbs and splashes through mud hole hazards. Notably, one of the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss prototypes was equipped with a sensor on the rear wheels that was used to monitor what the wheels were doing while playing off-road, including suspension travel. It also appears as though one of the rear exhaust finishers was crushed while testing, likely while transitioning into the steep climb test.
These 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss prototypes are the “regular” Trail Boss models, equipped with the more traditional front bumper treatment and plastic air deflector, as opposed to the Silverado ZR2 / Silverado Trail Boss ZR2 model that we caught testing earlier in the year.
For those readers who may not remember, the upcoming Silverado ZR2 / Silverado Trail Boss ZR2 differs from the “regular” Trail Boss with a more aggressive design, including a sturdy front skid plate treatment and removal of the lower front air dam, plus more ground clearance.
As GM Authority covered previously, the upcoming Silverado ZR2 / Silverado Trail Boss ZR2 is also expected to come MultiMatic DSSV dampers, similar to those found on the Chevy Colorado ZR2. Essentially, the Silverado ZR2 / Silverado Trail Boss ZR2 will arrive as a more capable Trail Boss model – a Trail Boss on steroids, if you will. The Silverado ZR2 / Silverado Trail Boss ZR2 is expected to launch either as a late 2022 model year vehicle, or for the 2023 model year.

In before all the suburban dads that don’t leave the pavement comment asking if it will have a front locker that they will never use or they will never buy it.
More nonsense from Nonsense.
Yah, we gotta have hard plastics, tiny screens and cardboard seats for the real truck men like Nonsense!
So this basically confirms that the shots we’ve seen before of the truck with the big front skid plate was the ZRX. Also they definitely were testing these trucks judging by the damage done to them.
Just what the world needs more purse cab trucks.
Why would they put a front air dam on a Trail Boss? It’s a foolish enough edition on the Z71.
Many reasons, first it make the front end look complete. All those air dams removed look like hack jobs. Keep it small and it looks nice and finishes the front. Second, this truck will mostly be for commuting duties, so it saves mpg which with gas prices going up and more people stretching what they can afford to buy one for the image helps them in the long run by saving money. I trimmed my air dam, the removed look was silly looking. Not to mention it cost me just over 1mpg on the highway so I trimming it means I got some of that back on road trips…
The sensors mounted to the rear are not for measuring suspension displacement. Those are encoders used to measure wheel rotational position. The rods are simply to keep the encoder bodies from rotating as the wheel moves up and down. Standard instrumentation for brake and driveline development. The truck is likely being used for rear locker or eLSD development. Good probability that this is not related to ZR2 rumors.
Damned if they do, damned if they don’t. No matter what GM does or doesn’t do. Some just want to damn GM!
lol @ the crushed exhaust tip from going up the hill.
More departure angle GM!
It already has more than a raptor…
You have the info on the 2022 GM trucks to say that?
If so, please share.
That exhaust needs to be moved anyways; it doesn’t look good and it builds up with ice in cold situations.
Who ever thought to design bumper exhaust on a truck needs to be punched in the face.
Can they just let us see what it will look like already? Production in September you would think they would want some hype to build up? Unless it’s less than flattering?
Looking forward to reading more. Great blog article. Thanks – Again. 47905970
