Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The increase in GMC Yukon sales place the model in third place in its competitive set, as its corporate cousins – the Chevy Tahoe (see running Chevrolet Tahoe sales) and Chevy Suburban (see running Chevrolet Suburban sales) continued to jointly outsell the Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales) for first place position in the segment.

Combining sales of the Tahoe and Suburban (in the same way as Ford does with the Expedition and Expedition L) results in the two Chevrolet models generating 34,181 deliveries, outselling the Expedition by 11,918 units. Notably, the Tahoe alone outsold the Expedition this quarter by 775 units. Meanwhile, the Yukon family – comprised of the regular-length Yukon and extended-length Yukon XL – saw 3,805 fewer sales than the Expedition.

GMC Yukon sales accounted for 22 percent segment share, behind the combined 40 percent commanded by the Tahoe/Suburban and 26 percent for the Ford Expedition. However, the Yukon saw its segment share rise 3 percent at the expense of all other segment rivals, except for the Toyota Sequoia and Suburban.

Taking into account the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, GM saw 52,639 sales in the segment for a 62 percent segment share.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment expanded nearly 16 percent to 84,537 units in Q1 2021, meaning Yukon sales outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Yukon sales grew faster than the segment average during the first quarter, allowing it to creep up on the Ford Expedition in the sales rankings. We attribute the circumstance to two factors:

  • Substantial interest and consideration in the all-new, 2021 Yukon, and
  • Improved availability of the all-new Yukon at the dealer level

The Yukon, along with its corporate Tahoe and Suburban platform mates, were overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year. With its new looks, technology, enhanced performance, and optimized efficiency, we expect the all-new 2021 GMC Yukon to further improve GM’s already-dominant position in the highly-lucrative full-size SUV space, as supply allows. The full-size SUVs – including the Yukon, Tahoe/Suburban and Escalade, are believed to be the biggest drivers of revenue and profit for GM.

However, competition is heating up. On the one hand, the still relatively new Ford Expedition is doing quite well in the segment, having posted a 12.5 percent increase in sales volume during Q1 2021. On the other, new entrants are on the horizon, including the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Even so, we fully expect the new Yukon to hold its own in the segment, and possibly rise to the second-best-selling position behind the Tahoe/Suburban, edging out the Expedition, though the ongoing microchip shortage might restrain that prognosis.
