GM May Drop Cadillac Symboliq And Optiq Trademark Filings

General Motors has dropped the relevant trademark filings for the Cadillac Symboliq and Cadillac Optiq nameplates – a sign that the automaker may be abandoning these names for two future battery-electric vehicles.

The American automaker filed three trademark applications last year for future electric Cadillac vehicles: Celestiq, Symboliq and Optiq. These names followed the newly introduced EV naming strategy of only using nameplates ending in the letters “iq,” a trend that began with the introduction of the Cadillac Lyriq crossover. The filings were initially made on July 21st and covered both the singular “Optiq” and “Symboliq” wordmarks and the phrases “Cadillac Optiq” and “Cadillac Symboliq.”

Cadillac iq Nameplate Trademark Filings As Of May 21st, 2021

Cadillac Celestiq USPTO 90065072 July 21, 2020 Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles Notice of allowance issued, pending Statement of Use
Celestiq USPTO 90064951 July 21, 2020 Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles Notice of allowance issued, pending Statement of Use
Cadillac Optiq USPTO 90065317 July 21, 2020 Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles Abandoned-Failure To Respond Or Late Response
Optiq USPTO 90065282 July 21, 2020 Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles Abandoned-Failure To Respond Or Late Response

Symboliq USPTO 90065419 July 21, 2020 Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles Notification of non-final action emailed

GM may have simply failed to pursue the trademark filing procedures and will apply for them again, or decided on different names for these future Cadillac EVs. Cadillac is currently plotting five future electric vehicles, which will include the Cadillac Lyriq, the Cadillac Celestiq flagship sedan, a full-size SUV that pulls DNA from the Cadillac Escalade, a three-row crossover and a compact crossover. The Symboliq and Optiq names were expected to be used on the two EV crossover models, though this was never confirmed by anyone from GM.

Cadillac’s head of global brand strategy, Phil Dauchy, previously said the automaker’s new “iq” naming convention “signals that Cadillac is bringing a different type of vehicle to market, one that works in concert with man, nature, and machine.” This nomenclature will replace the CT# and XT# naming strategy it uses currently, so it’s likely that Cadillac has simply decided on different “iq” names for the vehicles that were going to be named “Symboliq” and “Optiq.”

The first of these “iq” vehicles to arrive, the Cadillac Lyriq, will enter production at the GM Spring Hill Assembly plant in Tennessee early next year.

      1. If you want to find the most classless , uncool , tasteless executives without a clue : go look at Cadillacs .
They continue to destroy one of the iconic , legendary brand in history .
The EVS might give them a fresh start :but they continue the nonsensical attempts to be fresh & new :while looking like the wall flowers at the party :trying to dance with the most desirable girls .
Luxurious means TRADITIONAL & Cadillac was that with a futuristic twist .
The names are CORNY —-get that ?
        And more ‘crossovers ‘.
You have ENOUGH in the Lyriq :
A luxury line needs a coupe ( easily done ) & a CONVERTIBLE : A Cadillac EV one would be the only one on the market …..
and a upscale AFFORDABLE sedan :not one at 200.000 $ :which sounds like an old womens hairspray , or dish at Olive Garden .
        Sad .
There is NO brand with such a reservoir of legend & desirability as Cadillac .
They continue to run from it ; to defeat after defeat in the public perception & market.
Look at You Tube – Tik Tok presentations of classic Cadillacs ….
they reach up to 500.000 ‘ likes ‘: plus :while the new ‘ designs ‘muster 10 .000 : probably sales personal hoping .
With time , the legend & appeal Cadillacs generate by there PAST image will fade as fast as the sales figures on the vile CT – 5 .

        1. See Dante above –

Why does everyone get it but Mark and Mary? The two extremely well-compensated folks that have the power to fix it are clueless but pretty much everyone else, including Dante, can see so clearly. I’ll never understand. I’ll say it again: The only hope for Cadillac is to be purchased outright by a rival carmaker. EVs aren’t the magic bullet reset either because the people building the EVs are the same nitwits that put Cadillac in this predicament. They can’t even figure out a decent name.

        1. @Jim, don’t make a fool of yourself, there are photos of the Hummer structure posted online, its a 1 piece structure, not a body and frame as separate parts.

Once again here is the definition of a Unibody

“A type of body/frame construction in which the body of the vehicle, its floor plan and chassis form a single structure. Such a design is generally lighter and more rigid than a vehicle having a separate body and frame”.

          Reply
          1. EVs by definition are the derivatives of the body on frame due to their use of the skateboard structure that a separate body mounted on.

            Reply
            1. When the skateboard or frame work are incorporated into the body structure to form 1 structure that’s called a UNIBODY Hummer EV is a unibody, and so it the Rivian R1-T

I get that you do not know much about car structure, but look for the Hummer Structure photos online, I have seen them and dozens of the process photos from factory Zero, It has nothing in common with a body on frame…

              A body on frame definition

Body-on-frame is a common motor vehicle construction method, where a separate body or coach is mounted on a strong and relatively rigid vehicle frame or chassis that carries the powertrain (the engine and drivetrain) and to which the wheels and their suspension, brakes, and steering are mounted. While this was the original method of building automobiles, body-on-frame construction is now used mainly for heavy trucks, pickups, and predominantly large SUVs.

I am not trying to argue with you, but educate you… I was thinking about what you said about EV’s being body on frame, so you consider Bolt body on frame? Bolt is clearly a unibody How about Tesla S3XY? All Unibodies, How about E-Tron… Unibody, I-Pace Unibody, VW ID4 Unibody, Hyundai Kona Unibody Hmm, about the only EV I can think of that is in production today that is Body on Frame, is the BMW I3, that is a composite body bolted to an Aluminum frame, and F150 Lightning will be Body on Frame when it enters production as well. Ford took the short cut to designing the F150 EV and is using most of their off the shelf aluminum parts (cab, bed, doors, hood, etc…) Whether that strategy or GM’s all new structure is the winner, remains to be determined, but I would say it depends on volumes, if GM can get the BT1 project to high volume production 200K a year their unibody will be the winner, but if EV trucks struggle and BT1 is held to under 50K units a year, GM is going to have a big write down. GM has to reach scale to drive their cost down and also to amortize the huge Factory Zero investment.

  7. LOL. I guess it’s time for a another new naming strategy at Cadillac. I can’t say I actually liked their copycat approach to what Hyundai did with Ioniq so I’m not sad to see the ick names go, if that’s what’s happening, but it is another troubling indicator of the ongoing chaos at Cadillac.

If this news is true, it may mean Lyriq won’t actually be Lyriq; maybe LQ400N instead.

  12. Said it before and will continue to say it: GM MUST get with a program and stick with it. Do I like those names? No, but they are better than XT…..CT….and whatever. This just shows me that GM continues to make some bad decisions and it shows. Most likely these “Names” didn’t do well with people in clinical trials and GM at least heard and listened to them. So what this shows me is the bad decision to try those name to begin with.

Come up with great and sensible names, stick with them and put them on a product people want to buy.

But in seeing the badge for the Lyriq, the way they have the i in italics to look like a / maybe they are going to do a prefix. 500/Q or CT/Q or something? But that might get a lawsuit from Infiniti (if they still exist)

Of course fewer people are going to buy these vehicles….many cost $100,000. Tough noogies. Work their production into a multi-model factory site and only make enough to meet demand. Cadillac needs to stop going bonkers on electric and bring these flagship sedans back yesterday!!
