General Motors Drops Service Update For Blacked-Out Infotainment Screen Issue

General Motors has released a service update to address a problem that can cause the infotainment screen in certain vehicles to suddenly appear black.

The problem: in affected vehicles, the infotainment screen may appear blacked out in cold weather conditions.

The hazards: this problem does not pose any sort of safety risk or hazard to vehicle occupants. However, this problem can prevent occupants from being able to use the vehicle’s infotainment screen, so it would be in owners’ best interest to address the problem.

The fix: dealers will reprogram the infotainment system. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner and will prevent the blacked out screen issue from happening again.

Affected components: infotainment screen, infotainment software.

  1. So did they drop the update or release it? You state in the title that it was dropped, indicating maybe it wasn’t ready. Then in your article you mention it was released.

I’m so confused. (yes, this comment is full of sarcasm.)

    1. I thought the same thing when I saw the heading, I guess he’s just trying to be cool,
But I agree with you it should say release not drop not talking about music and dropping a beat really kind of stupid.

  2. Yet another reason I’m glad to drive 2000s cars.
No screen blacking out in my fleet.

  3. Isn’t this something that can be done OTA (over the air) with this new architecture? I thought that was a big plus to doing this so updates can be sent to the vehicle while at home.

  4. They should push the update to my 2019 equinox. It does the same thing

  5. Not a safety issue? You mean you can change the system settings that are only accessible through the infotaiment screen. Got it. Is this GM Marketing or GM Authority? Shilling much? This is a major screw up and should be reported as such and GM should be acknowledged for pulling the flawed update which was inadequately tested. I nevEr update my software_no idea what changes they are making. If it works leave it alone.

  6. My 2017 Traverse had a similar issue that had nothing to do with the cold. It would flash random colors, and create a piercing noise. You couldn’t turn it off, mute or lower volume. Only fix was doing a two button reset. My 2019 has the updated interface with no problems.

  7. You would think after the fiasco they had back in 2018 with the screens delaminating and Cadillacs and causing people not to have function of their HVAC systems and some models, that they would snap out of making cheap junk, it’s a shame you spend thousands on those cars already you’ve got an issue with something that is used a lot especially in newer vehicles once again GM shoots themselves in the foot these vehicles should be practically perfect.

  8. Though not mentioned in the list of affected vehicles, my 2019 Canyon has a similar problem: blacks out or non-responsive in cold weather conditions.

  9. Yet GM thinks they are ready to play with the big boys and price the CT5-V Blackwing at M5 & E63 levels. For that kinda of money the AMG AND M label would be my 1st choice all day.

  10. My 2020 Sierra Denali pickup does the exact same thing.

    1. Your Sierra doesn’t use Global-B, so it is not covered by this one.

  11. I’m sorry but I don’t see my 2015 Sierra mentioned here but I’ve been having the same problem with my vehicle, its on the 3rd infotainment module now. I love my truck but with a vehicle that’s under 35,000 miles I really think GM should do something about this issue as well because its very annoying when you’re driving and the screen goes black or changes all on its own.

  19. It’s not just the new vehicle’s I have a 2015 silverado 1500 LS and I’ve been having problems with my radio cuts in and out goes out for weeks and then just comes on and blinks on and off I’ve tried everything it frist started when I got the truck 3 years ago came with gm certification and warranty the dealer replaced the screen then the radio unit itself it was fine for a while and started right back up no more warranty and I just don’t feel it’s worth paying the dealer what they want to try again so I’m now looking at an after market stereo and hopefully that will take care of my problems I’m so disappointed in GM my dad retired from there and this is what they have come to my next truck might be a Toyota thanks GM for destroying any faith in an American vehicle

  22. My 221 Equinox screen randomly blacks out for a minute then restarts, happens cold or hot. Sometimes can drive 10 miles no blackout, other times blacks out 5 times. Reprogram by dealer had no effect. New HMI behind glove box had no effect. Car only has 17,750 miles.

    1. Elkins Chevrolet in Marlton, NJ fixed this issue. It was a Telecommunication Interface Module that is under the radio. They replaced it and now my radio runs continuously. Very pleased with there service department.

  23. My 2021 Equinox, 17,800 miles, has major infotainment blackout issue. Radio randomly shuts down for about a minute then comes back on. Dealer reprogrammed the system and it still blacks out randomly, when very cold and when very warm, not related to temp. Sometimes happens in 1/2 mile from start of drive, other times several miles. May shut down once, and other times every 2 to 5 minutes.

  26. This issue also affects 5th and 6th Gen Camaros regardless of year. I have a 2020 2SS with the same issue. My previous 2016 SS had the same issue.

Be nice if GM stopped using crap touch screens in our cars considering the prices we pay for them

  31. I personally think the computers are not secured properly. I couldn’t get around a pot hole in time and the screen went back to normal when I bashed the pot hole. Also my RPM gauge just bounces around if the A/C is on. There’s also issues with the hard shifting from 1st to 2nd gear when driving in automatic mode. My drive shaft broke a month or so ago so that was anther 800 for the part from GM did the install which all took a month and it’s still not running correctly as there’s some type of grinding sound like metal on metal. GET IT TOGETHER BEFORE I GO TO AN ASIAN ELECTRIC CAR. We want asnwers

  35. My 2024 Buick Enclave Infotainment screen goes black without any user interaction, generally after driving for 1-2 hours in both warm and cold weather conditions. I can also ‘force’ it to happen just by touching the volume control after driving the car for at least an hour. When the infotainment screen goes black, the digital clock freezes on main dash, the onstar light goes from green to red, radio station (or sirius) continues to play but no longer any volume or channel control, and loose Apple Carplay as bluetooth connection is lost. Only way to reset the problem is to totally turn the car off and then restart car. Has anyone out there isolated and solved this GM problem??? Is it a faulty HMI module???
