General Motors has issued a recall for certain examples of the 2019 and 2020 model year Chevy Silverado 6500HD chassis cab truck due to an issue related to the vehicles’ top speed limiter device.
The problem: affected vehicles may have been equipped with a top speed limiter that exceeds the max speed rating of the factory tires. The speed limiter does not allow the truck to exceed 79 mph, however the factory tires only carry a maximum speed rating of 75 mph.
The hazards: if the vehicle speed exceeds the maximum speed rating of the tires, the tire structure will be compromised. This can increase the risk of a tire failure and crash.
The fix: dealers are instructed to update the software calibration for the engine control module to set the speed limiting software so that the vehicle speed will not exceed 75 mph and therefore meet the maximum speed rating of the tires.
Affected components: factory vehicle speed limiter.
Affected vehicles:
- 2019 Chevy Silverado 6500HD
- 2020 Chevy Silverado 6500HD
Number of affected vehicles: GM has not announced how many vehicles may be affected by this issue.
Next steps: GM will notify owners of affected trucks and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. If owners are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall, they can visit my.gm.com/

Too bad GM is so slow rolling out over the air software updates like Tesla has had since 2013, that would make this much easier and cheaper to fix.
This is not a GM platform, and does not use GM electricals, partially due to law (OBD).
In 2021 GM pickups still cannot updates most functions OTA…
