It’s almost like people don’t want to buy this car, can’t say I blame them. The Bolt EUV is essentially the same exact vehicle and I would expect it to also have a diminutive share of a tiny market. Luckily Mary Barra, in all her genius, has the Hummer and Cadillac BEVs in the pipeline. At those vehicles price points she’ll be lucky to move 40k units combined per year. That would bring a combined sales of all the BEVs in the lineup to about 25% of what the Cruze sold per year in it’s heyday… Pathetic. How is trading all that market share for profits a good thing long term?
luft said all future EVs will be profitable. i hope that is true because it sure isn’t right now.
Blame accounting for footprint c.a.f.e. and carb credits. The Bolts have a wide berth between Spark and Malibu in car segments. Malibu might be a cafe full size and get a break over the Sonic & Cruze. Which might actually drag down cafe.
Bolt sales are all credit. Credit toward Silverados/Tahoe/Suburban. It’s lucky they offer the entry-est level Spark. If there was no Ram 5.7, they’d be telling truck buyers to shell it out for a 6.2, and the 5.3 would be gone. Asian makes:
can’t use that revenue option here well, have better fwd car buyer sentiment, generally hit better on trims and options there.
Realize cafe & carb credits are effectively a regressive tax against people that want their vehicles compact, affordable, and simple/robust or fun/sporty.
Meanwhile Tesla sells every Model Y they can build for over $50K, nobody gets a discount… Go figure, build a really good and class leading EV and they sell as fast as you can build them, but build a compromised compliance car like the Bolt and you have to throw 10K on the hood of every sale. ARE YOU LISTENING GM??? Build the best, and people will knock your door down to get them, but Bolt is certainly not the best.
Tesla estimates last quarter sales for the model Y to be 33k units in the US. Which is definitely better than the Bolt at barely 10k units. What’s funny is that Tesla only gives estimates for sales figures… You’d think a stock “worth” $600 a share could give you an exact figure. Anyways the Corolla sales as many units in a Month as the model y does in a quarter… the market for BEVs clearly isn’t all that large.
Also why is lowercase gm clinging to Lordstown stock like it will ever have value… that company is DOA and gm should cut it’s losses while it still can.
The part you miss is Model Y sells for $54K (today), on the bottom end, Corolla sells under $20K, Slightly different addressable market.
Tesla only has 1 tent building Model Y in the USA, you will see as their production in Austin TX comes online later this year you will see that 33K per quarter jump dramatically.
Tesla does not want to give too much information about their production and sales, that way Wall Street cannot model exactly what is happening there. I can tell you though, Model Y is canabolizing Model 3, Y is just a better car in nearly every way. Y will likely hit 500K global sales this year, if Tesla can get them built… By far the top EV globally.
Yeah, Tesla lack of transparency is a bit worrisome for me. Tesla’s “investment” in Bitcoin will be reflected in the next quarterly statement. It looks like Tesla will be down over $100 million, unless Bitcoin has a rally. Crypto is a unregulated cult anyways, not backed be any tangible value other than hype. Elon “controls” a useless market with unregulated tweets… Hard pass for me dog.
Of course, Tesla as an investment you have to have the stomach for some craziness, and unexpected peaks and valleys. Elon Musk is a wierdo, and partial con man. Tesla as an EV builder is a rock star though, their cars are simply beyond reproach, they always win on specs, efficiency, fun factor, and tech. Tesla is not perfect though, my Y was delivered with minor manufacturing issues and took 2 service visits to get to perfect, and I did the paint correction myself as I do on all new vehicles I buy. I was frustrated the first week, with the quality control lapses, but since then its been 6 months of pure pleasure, and might be my favorite new car I have bought. There is something about Tesla ownership when you wake up and there has been an overnight software update that feels like Christmas morning, did I get some new feature? Did they improve the fart machine sounds? Did Autopilot get better while I was sleeping? This is pretty cool, I have had to do a 180 degree turn around on Tesla, from committed short seller of the stock who follows TSLAQ hourly, to bull, and even bought the product.
They just took the wrong approach. The Bolt is built to be as affordable as possible, which is why it’s a hatchback Chevrolet.
Unfortunately, nobody wants a $35,000 economy car.
They should have built a more expensive luxury car, that way they could bury the costs of the EV tech in the higher price tag.
Maybe some day EVs will be affordable, but that is still a long way off.
but when first sold, they still qualified for the 7500 tax credit + state incentives. that would bring the price down to below $30K? which is still too much but not crazy.
and with the 2022 model, that starts at $32K. assuming they requalify for the 7500 federal + state, that’ll bring the price below $25K and that makes sense.
The Bolt should be $25k without handout government money coming from my pocket. It’s a 10 year old chassis with really not a lot changed form the Sonic. It’s just not worth $30k and my tax dollars shouldn’t have to make up the difference.
Exactly right, Nate… GM should have made a cooler looking, and more sporty Bolt, and we would be having a different conversation now. Bolt is a gawky hatchback, and is lacking in aerodynamics and efficiency. I mean think about this… A AWD Tesla model Y which is 800lb heavier, a full size class bigger, AWD, and yet achieved better efficiency and longer range. Not only is the Y wiser with energy, it also charges 3X as fast.
The reasons the Bolt does not sell well are obvious…
