The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded 28 percent to 274,879 units during Q1 2021, meaning the Chevy Trax significantly underperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
The 40 percent decline in Chevy Trax sales during the first quarter of 2021 is not unexpected, since it’s now facing internal competition from the all-new Chevy Trailblazer. However, despite the 40 percent sales slide, the Trax still managed to maintain a decent position in the segment, outselling over half of the segment contenders.
The Trax managed to post a 3 percent growth rate during Q2 2020, defying the COVID-19 pandemic to become the only model in the segment to post a sales uptick. We suspected that the Q2 increase was the result of favorable supply of the model at the retail level when compared to other models, as the GM Bupeyong plant in South Korea was somewhat shielded from production interruptions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. By comparison, the GM San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico – which also produces the Trax – saw a greater disruption due to the virus.
Given that the Trax is being sold alongside the much newer and more attractive Trailblazer, it’s possible that Trax sales will continue dropping as Trailblazer continues to gain at the expense of Trax. However, the Trax and Trailblazer transact at notably different prices, with the former significantly more affordable than the latter. And, as GM Authority reported recently, the Trax and Trailblazer both have the youngest buyers in the segment.
