Chevy Bolt EV Sales Jump 54 Percent During Q1 2021

Chevy Bolt EV sales increased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico while decreasing in South Korea and Brazil during the first quarter of 2021.

In the United States, Chevrolet Bolt EV deliveries totaled 9,025 units in Q1 2021, an increase of about 54 percent compared to 5,873 units sold in Q1 2020.

In Canada, Chevrolet Bolt EV deliveries totaled 1,614 units in Q1 2021, an increase of about 67 percent compared to 969 units sold in Q1 2020.

In South Korea, Chevrolet Bolt EV deliveries totaled 175 units in Q1 2021, a decrease of about 77 percent compared to 755 units sold in Q1 2020.

In Brazil, Chevrolet Bolt EV deliveries totaled 15 units in Q1 2021, a decrease of about 69 percent compared to 48 units sold in Q1 2020.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Bolt EV sales saw a significant increase of nearly 54 percent during the first quarter of 2021, allowing the small electric model to increase its segment share by four percentage points.

The results keep the Bolt EV in second place in the mainstream dedicated electric and electrified vehicle segment, behind the Toyota Prius, which commanded 44 percent of the segment share with a 22 percent increase in sales volume. The Bolt EV outsold the rest of the segment, including the Hyundai Ioniq, the Nissan Leaf – currently the most direct rival to the Bolt EV, the Honda Clarity – which was the only model to post a decline in sales, Toyota Mirai, and the discontinued Volkswagen E-Golf.

As we always mention, it’s worth highlighting the fact that Toyota Prius and Hyundai Ioniq sales figures do not exclusively represent battery-electric vehicles, since those model ranges also include hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The case is similar for the Honda Clarity, which is available in Plug-In Hybrid, Electric and Fuel Cell variants.

The mainstream dedicated new energy vehicle segment expanded nearly 33 percent to 32,163 units in Q1 2021, meaning that the Bolt EV significantly outperformed the segment.

The GM Authority Take

Low Chevy Bolt EV sales volume has typically been an area of concern given GM’s EV-focused strategy, which calls for launching 30 electric vehicles by the year 2025. As a result, the vehicle’s overly positive sales performance during Q1 2021 represents a glimmer of hope that sales will continue to rise not just for the Bolt, but for EVs as a whole. In fact, a recent study found that 71 percent of U.S. drivers are considering an electric vehicle.

Despite the significant 54 percent growth in Q1 2021 sales volume in the U.S. market, the Bolt’s EV’s sales volume is still quite low. In fact, Chevy delivered 5,025 fewer units of the Bolt EV than Toyota did the Prius during the quarter. Granted, most Prius models sold are hybrids and some are plug-in hybrids rather than pure EVs, so it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison. However, the comparatively low sales volume of the Chevy is concerning nonetheless.

2022 Bolt EV refresh

The Bolt EV will receive a thorough refresh that will launch mid-2021 as a 2022 model year vehicle. Updates to the model include new front and rear fascias, along with various improvements to the interior. The battery electric drivetrain will not be updated. 2022 Bolt EUV

At the same time, it be joined by a new sibling model called Bolt EUV, which is slightly larger and more spacious. The duo shares the GM BEV2 platform, along with the battery tech and powertrain. See more on the 2022 Bolt EUV.

Both the 2022 Bolt EV and EUV have recently started shipping to dealers across the U.S.

              2. I found an article for you because I’m so used to doing work for you lazy progressives anyways. Like I said though, local papers don’t typically stop and interview every vehicle pulled over on the side of the road. I’ve personally seen 3 BEVs pulled over, for what I can only assume were dead batteries.

  5. I am not in anyway shape or form in love with Teslas, but atleast they thought and planned ahead and had a business model. Yes one can charge at home as long as you have a 240 Volt connection. Most people are aware of this but alot are not and they go in and by these vehicles not knowing. Tesla has charging stations, GM has an app that tells you wear an open charger is the problem being that charger maynot work . It may not be common now bt as more people blindly adapt these it will be like cars running out of gas, It is human nature we forget, we sometimes dont plan ahead. But what happens in this case if someone runs out?. I am sure there have been instances.

    1. The next generation of electric charge stations will have massive battery storage and multi bay charge stations like at a gas station. Tanker trucks with pre charged batteries will arrive just like a gas tanker truck, to replenish the available charge. They will hook up from the tanker to the station and drive away without the battery tanker. It’s not as stupid as you make it out to be.

  7. I think this goes to show that people may not necessarily be against electric cars. I think some are against the premium cost of them. The Bolt has been flying off dealer lots because they are taking 50% off of them. I bought mine recently for 22,465 marked down from over 44k for my Premier. It is a great little car especially for that kind of money. Since they threw money on the hood my local dealers cannot keep them in stock and my Bolt forum I belong to is blowing up with new people.

  8. It is amazing how poorly the second generation Leaf is selling. Nissan still has the full $7500 EV tax credit and still can’t sell the Leaf.

    One thing GM got right with the Bolt was understanding the minimum range required to make people comfortable with an electric car.

    1. The second generation LEAF has generic Nissan styling – it does not stand out among all the Nissan offerings. I thought the first generation LEAF was butt-ugly, but it was never mistaken for being anything but itself.

      The Bolt is style is rather busy with its many elements competing for attention, but it is not ugly. There is no mistaking it for being anything other than itself.

  9. The Bolt EV in 2017 and the Bolt EV in 2021 are virtually the same. Increased marketing on national media is IMO the primary reason for the sales jump. Prior sales quarters did not have that support. I hope GM learned a lesson out of this. And seeing the Cadillac Lyriq TV commercial already multiple times before it has even been built and shipped to dealers suggests they did.

  10. Wow Melinda, if you don’t like battery electric vehicles, you don’t have to buy one and you don’t have to criticize everything to do with EV’s. It’s all false myths that you are writing. For those who think EV’s run out of power, the on board smarts always show the current state of charge. If someone ran out of ” juice” it’s the drivers fault, not the design. No different when when you run out of gas by not paying attention to the gas gauge.

    This forum is for comments on the vehicles itself, not personal attacks on their comments. Be nice and others will be nice to you.😎
