The legendary Callaway Corvette Sledgehammer was listed for sale via Bring-A-Trailer this week and has already attracted an eye-watering $425,000 in bids nine days before the virtual gavel is set to fall on the auction.
The Callaway Corvette Sledgehammer needs no introduction among most Corvette enthusiast circles. This one-off tuner special was built by the Connecticut-based company back in 1988 to showcase Callaway’s ability to produce a car with record-breaking top speed and streetcar amenities. It features a specially built 5.7L V8 with a blueprinted block, Cosworth crankshaft, forged pistons, a dry sump oiling system and, most importantly, two Turbonetics T04B turbochargers. This beastly setup, controlled by a Zytek engine management system, produced an absurd 880 horsepower and 772 pound-feet of torque and fed power to an upgraded ZF six-speed manual transmission.
In October 1988, Callaway drove the car round-trip from its headquarters in Connecticut to the Transportation Research Center in Ohio, which has a 7.5-mile oval track ideal for testing out a car’s top speed. It was there that NHRA racer John Lingenfelter piloted the car to a record-breaking top speed of 254.76 mph – an impressively high top speed even today, let alone back in the late 1980s. This put the Sledgehammer in the Corvette history books, with the vehicle appearing in the National Corvette Museum on multiple different occasions. It was also inducted into Bloomington Gold’s ‘The Great Hall’ in 2013, certifying it as one of the 50 most influential Corvettes to ever exist.
The Sledgehammer was acquired by its current owner in 2004 and now shows just under 2,000 miles on the odometer. It has been kept in a museum environment for the majority of its life, so it has been well-kept and meticulously maintained over the years. Callaway installed new replacement hoses, couplings, and fittings in 2018, as shown in the included service history. It’s being offered with a CarFax report, a clean Colorado title and Callaway engineering records. The winning bidder will also receive a car familiarization course from Callaway to acquaint them with this wildly powerful Corvette and its various intricacies.
