1991 GMC Safari GT Hits Online Auction

Although most car enthusiasts associate vans with humdrum people-moving and little else, there are a few notable exceptions. The A-Team GMC Vandura certainly comes to mind. Indeed, done right, vans can actually be quite interesting and exciting, such as with the GMC Safari GT, an example of which was recently listed for sale in an online auction.

Recently posted online to the Rad For Sale auto auctions website, this particular GMC Safari GT hails from the 1991 model year, and looks to be in pretty decent shape.

For those readers who may not know, the GMC Safari GT added an extra dose of aesthetic appeal to the GMC Safari lineup, with a variety of styling upgrades for oodles of curb appeal.

Notable bits and pieces on this particular example include a fresh body kit with a set of Boyd Coddington aluminum wheels and other aero bits, all of which work to complement the sportier front end. The grille is also done in black, falling in line with the two-tone exterior panels, which come slathered in white up top, with a bronze dividing line in between. And of course, we have to mention the new roof-mounted spoiler as well, which looks great with the faux louvers behind the windows.

The cabin space looks like it’s in good condition as well, and according to the listing, both the heater and A/C work well. A new aftermarket CD player was added to the dash, sending signals to the factory speakers.

As for the powertrain, this 1991 GMC Safari GT runs a 4.3L V6 engine, which connects to a four-speed automatic transmission to drive the rear wheels. Mileage is set at 126,000 miles, with recent work including a new water pump and thermostat, new transmission output shaft seal, new alternator, new starter, and a new battery. The brakes were also replaced last year.

Now, this 1991 GMC Safari is up for grabs, with the current bid at $6,000 as of this writing (05/17/2021). The auction will end Friday, May 21st, 2021.

  1. I actually like these minivans, and I’m not a minivan personally. I had a 4.3 I my S10, and it was bulletproof.

  2. I still have my ’93 Astro LT, although it hasn’t been roadworthy for years. I really liked the way it handled and what the 4.3 and rwd could do, compared to the less capable fwd minivans of the day. I always wished it had cargo doors on both sides and was disappointed when GM discontinued them without trying to make any substantive improvements.

  3. My parents always had Astros as I was growing up. Always great vans. The first was a 90 a Astro RS. Wish I had that one today.

  4. I owned a 1991 AWD Safari. It offered an unbeatable combination of capability and fuel economy – seating for eight and cavernous cargo capacity. Sadly, the 4.3 V6 threw a rod at 174K miles, a victim of -30 F airport parking in a New England winter.

  5. I still drive a 1197 astro for my roadside mechanic business.. and my dad still has a 99 astro topper all the bells and whistles I live them!!
