Twelve U.S. States Call On Biden Administration To Ban Gasoline Vehicle Sales By 2035

The governors of twelve U.S. states wrote a letter to President Biden this week urging his administration to implement a federal ban on new gasoline vehicle sales by 2035.
The letter, which was reviewed by Reuters Wednesday, calls for Biden “to ensure that all new passenger cars and light-duty trucks sold are zero-emission no later than 2035 with significant milestones along the way to monitor progress.”
In addition to calling for a ban on new gasoline vehicle sales, the letter urged the current administration to implement new federal incentives to help speed up the rate of adoption for medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. The governors want to work toward ensuring 100 percent of medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicle sales are zero-emission by 2045. This could help the administration achieve its self-set goal of replacing the entire federal vehicle fleet with EVs – which consists of a large number of medium- and heavy-duty trucks.
The letter was signed by the governors of the following twelve U.S. states:
- California
- New York
- Massachusetts
- North Carolina
- Connecticut
- Hawaii
- Maine
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- Oregon
- Washington State
- Rhode Island
The letter also calls for the Biden Administration to provide “substantial” funding to states for new charging and EV infrastructure and do away with manufacturer-based limits on EV tax credits. Buyers of General Motors EVs can no longer receive a federal tax incentive for the vehicle purchase after the automaker ran through the 200,000-vehicle limit back in 2019.
Some states are already looking at implementing their own bans on the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles, including California and Massachusetts, which are looking to phase them out by 2035. Washington is also looking at banning the sale of new ICE vehicles by as early as 2030.
With politicians beginning to take aim at ICE vehicles, companies like GM are ramping up their EV development efforts dramatically. Roughly 40 percent of GM’s U.S. product portfolio will be electric by the end of 2025 and the automaker may phase out ICE vehicles entirely by 2035. The automaker will offer EVs under all of its brands in the U.S. and says its EV offerings will span a wide range of price points and use purposes.
