Like GM’s HD Trucks, 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Has Eight Lug Nuts

A close look at the wheels of the upcoming 2022 GMC Hummer EV all-electric pickup truck reveals that it has eight lug nuts per corner.
This is the same number of lug nuts that General Motors uses for the 2021 Chevy Silverado HD pickup and its corporate cousin, the 2021 GMC Sierra HD. But the Hummer EV is not as large as those vehicles – far from it.
2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup | 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Long Bed | |
---|---|---|
Length (in. / mm) | 216.8 / 5,507 | 229.5 / 5,829 |
Wheelbase (in. / mm) | 135.6 / 3,445 | 139.6 / 3,546 |
Width without mirrors (in. / mm) | 86.7 / 2,202 | 81.1 / 2,060 |
The Hummer EV pickup is not even as large as the light duty 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 – nor, by extension, the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500. The Hummer is 5.6 inches wider (without mirrors) than the Silverado Regular Cab Long Bed, which is the most compact version of the Chevrolet truck. However, its overall length and wheelbase are 12.7 inches and 4.0 inches shorter, respectively.
The octet of lug nuts on the GMC Hummer EV pickup can not mean that it matches the Silverado HD or Sierra HD in capability typically associated with a pickup truck. The heavy duty trucks have a maximum trailering capacity of 36,000 pounds, and the maximum available payload is 7,442 pounds. No such figures have yet been published for the Hummer, but we can be confident that they will not come close. With independent rear suspension and coil springs, the EV truck is not set up for maximum towing or payload performance.

So why does it have eight lug nuts per wheel? The answer must lie in the quoted wheel torque figure. In the powertrain fitted as standard to the Hummer EV pickup Edition 1 and optional on the EV3X, the torque figure is 11,500 pound-feet. That’s a lot of turning force for the wheels to resist – likely more than even the most powerful Silverado HD or Sierra HD can produce, though there are no official figures (yet) to confirm this. With 11,500 pound-feet to deal with, the more lug nuts the vehicle has, the better.
The Hummer EV pickup Edition 1 will go on sale in the fall of this year, priced to start at $112,595. The first model recently sold for $2.5 million at auction. Edition 1 will be followed over the next two and a half years by the decreasingly powerful and increasingly affordable EV3X, EV2X and EV2. The Hummer EV SUV, which is expected to be mechanically identical to the pickup and have a similar pricing structure, will be officially unveiled later today, on April 3rd at 5 PM Eastern Standard Time.
