GMC Canyon Sales Post Highest Increase In Segment During Q1 2021

GMC Canyon sales increased in the United States and Canada during the first quarter of 2021.

GMC Canyon Sales - Q1 2021 - United States

In the United States, GMC Canyon deliveries totaled 7,144 units in Q1 2021, an increase of about 59 percent compared to 4,483 units sold in Q1 2020.
MODEL Q1 2021 / Q1 2020 Q1 2021 Q1 2020
CANYON +59.36% 7,144 4,483

GMC Canyon Sales - Q1 2021 - Canada

In Canada, GMC Canyon deliveries totaled 1,648 units in Q1 2021, an increase of about 134 percent compared to 703 units sold in Q1 2020.
MODEL Q1 2021 / Q1 2020 Q1 2021 Q1 2020
CANYON +134.43% 1,648 703

Despite the GMC brand being available in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, the Canyon is sold in the U.S. and Canada, but not in Mexico.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Canyon sales performance during the first quarter of 2021 keeps the midsize pickup truck in sixth (and last) place in its segment in terms of cumulative sales volume, behind the Toyota Tacoma in first place, the new Ford Ranger in second place (see running Ford Ranger sales), the Canyon’s corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Colorado – in third place (see running Chevrolet Colorado sales), the all-new Jeep Gladiator in fourth, and the Nissan Frontier in fifth.

Sales Numbers - Midsize Mainstream Pickup Trucks - Q1 2021 - USA

MODEL Q1 21 / Q1 20 Q1 21 Q1 20 Q1 21 SHARE Q1 20 SHARE
TOYOTA TACOMA +23.89% 66,449 53,636 44% 43%
FORD RANGER +15.19% 24,166 20,980 16% 17%
CHEVROLET COLORADO +12.38% 24,083 21,430 16% 17%
JEEP GLADIATOR +23.35% 18,822 15,259 12% 12%
NISSAN FRONTIER +4.86% 10,780 10,280 7% 8%
GMC CANYON +59.36% 7,144 4,483 5% 4%
TOTAL +20.13% 151,444 126,068

Even so, the Canyon’s 59 percent growth rate was the highest in its segment during the quarter. The Toyota Tacoma and Jeep Gladiator were the next-highest, with 24 and 23 percent, respectively.

As a result of the impressive jump, the GMC Canyon saw its share of the midsize pickup truck segment grow from 4 to 5 percent during the first quarter. The Toyota Tacoma saw its share increase from 43 percent to 44 percent, Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado each saw their shares decrease from 17 to 16 percent, the Jeep Gladiator’s segment share remained stable at 12 percent, and the Nissan Frontier fell from 8 to 7 percent.

Sales Numbers - GM Midsize Mainstream Pickup Trucks - Q1 2021 - USA

MODEL Q1 21 / Q1 20 Q1 21 Q1 20 Q1 21 SHARE Q1 20 SHARE
CHEVROLET COLORADO +12.38% 24,083 21,430 77% 83%
GMC CANYON +59.36% 7,144 4,483 23% 17%
TOTAL +20.51% 31,227 25,913

It’s worth noting that combined deliveries of the two GM offerings – the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado – totaled 31,227 units, resulting in a 21 percent segment share for The General. That’s good enough for second place in the segment, behind the Tacoma but ahead of the Ranger and all other rivals.

The mid-size mainstream pickup truck segment expanded 20 percent to 151,444 units during the first quarter of 2021, meaning that Canyon sales significantly outpaced the average segment growth rate.

The GM Authority Take

The continued rise in GMC Canyon sales during Q1 2021 follows a drastic rebound in Q4 2020, which was a pleasant surprise given the model’s otherwise lackluster performance during the first three quarters of the 2020 calendar year, which was partially impacted by issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. We attribute the Canyon’s healthy sales uptick to the following two factors:

  1. Improved availability of the Canyon at the dealer level after COVID-19 idled the GM Wentzville plant for roughly two months in the first half of the year, and
  2. Positive consumer interest and response to the updated 2021 Canyon

  1. IMO I think the Canyon looks much nicer than the Colorado with the exception of the ZR2. I think the Colorado still looks great, but I love the front end of the Canyon. The large grill looks sexy.

    1. I agree. I’ll admit I’m a little dumbfounded as to why the canyon doesn’t sell better.

      1. Because it’s sold by GMC dealers, who seem to only be interested in selling fully loaded versions of their trucks, and only in black white or grayscale.

  2. Statistics are great aren’t they. Massage the raw data the way you want to make things appear they way you want. I read this article and I call BS. GMC Canyon sales are pathetic. Units sold over last year only increased by 2661 units. This unit increase only beat out Chevy’s 2653 unit increase and Nissan’s 500 unit increase, making GMC’s unit increase fourth in the segment, not first. Toyota was first with a unit increase of 12813. Jeep was second with a unit increase of 3563. And Ford was third with a unit increase of 3186. GM is literally now father behind the competition in unit sales than they were in the same time frame a year ago, all except for Nissan, by a margin of 500+ to 10,000+ units. Toyota slaughtered GMC. Toyota’s unit increase over last year alone beat out GMC’s total units sold by 5669 units. GMC should be embarrassed. But go ahead and pat GM/GMC on the back for a job well done for increasing a pathetically small unit count by 59.36%.

  3. they are behind because they are always complaycent, hardly ever benchmark anything. For example The tacoma has had dynamic cruise for years now and the 2021 colorado nope , still dont have the 10 speed tranny that was codeveloped by chevy and ford but its in the ranger raptor and still dont have the 2.7 turbo that the truck needs to be lighter fuel efficient, more power and more torque but no let ford have that one. Keep the shocks in the center of the truck in the rear not like some of the others pushing them out to the hubs. keep the same frame guys dont need a new platform just make it better you finally have all the bugs out. I would like a new colorado bison cause I only buy american but ill have to wait till it comes with dynamic Im not going to spend 50k on a truck with no dynamic also 10 speed 2.7l , its worth waiting for.

    1. The Canyon 3.6L V6 produces more horse power than the Ranger turbo 4 banger.

      1. But it makes much more torque and that matters.

  4. The GMC line is pure profit. They cost more with more standard options but they also make more. They are not the value line as Chevy and they play a specific roll. How many have cried in the past that GMC has no reason and now they are one of GM’s Profit centers not just offering a Chevy with a different grill.

While some are ignorant the GM trucks are the class leaders even at this age. They have many features the others lack. While you may have dynamic cruise in a Taco you still have drum brakes, C channel frame, less power, less gears a plastic bed. etc.

The Ranger may have a Ten speed and Turbo 4 but they still have an old truck that is even older than the GM truck. You can’t even fold the back seat flat? There is no Ranger Raptor yet in America too and the one over seas is only a diesel.

If they would wake up they would understand a new truck is a year out with the 2.7 coming and ten speed. It will have many new features as they are not going to add them to the present truck for just a year.

As for colors I have a Granite Red one and had choices of more than black, white and silver.

  5. This segment will continue to rise as city dwellers continue to escape cities and flee to the burbs. Keep an eye on the housing market and new truck sales. That will be the biggest factor in new vehicle sales, as long as supply can keep up.
