General Motors has issued a service update to address a problem with the 2021 Buick Envision that can cause the vehicle’s battery to drain while it is shut off.
The problem: in affected vehicles, the transmission control module (or TCM) may not shut down properly when the vehicle is switched off, which could drain the battery while it’s parked. This problem can occur if the battery was previously disconnected and then reconnected.
The hazards: this problem does not pose an immediate safety risk to the driver or vehicle occupants. However, if the 2021 Buick Envision’s battery drains, the driver could be left stranded and would need to jump the vehicle to restart it.
The fix: these repairs can be performed through an over-the-air (OTA) update. For customers who cannot perform the OTA update themselves for any reason, GM will instruct dealers to reprogram the transmission control module (TCM) in affected vehicles. This update will allow the TCM to shut down properly upon vehicle switch off and prevent the battery from draining while the vehicle sits parked.
