GM Invests More Than $1 Billion In Ramos Arizpe Plant

General Motors has just announced it will invest more than one billion dollars in its Ramos Arizpe manufacturing complex, the automaker’s most strategic plant in Mexico. During a press conference held earlier today, the company informed the Latin country’s authorities that it will inaugurate a new, state-of-the-art paint plant at Ramos Arizpe.

In addition to the new paint shop that will start operating in June 2021, the significant investment will also serve to transform the Ramos Arizpe plant into the fifth GM North America manufacturing site to produce electric vehicles. Beginning in 2023, the Mexican complex will join the EV plants in Spring Hill, Tennessee, Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck and Lake Orion, both in Michigan, as well as CAMI in Ingersoll, Ontario.

“We are very proud to contribute to the realization of GM’s Triple Zero Vision by producing electric vehicles,” said GM Mexico President and CEO, Francisco Garza, in a statement. “We are confident that the necessary economic conditions will be met so that eventually, the complex can grow the workforce by one more shift in some operations. This is great news to continue celebrating GM’s 85-plus-year presence in Mexico, and to show our commitment to the country,” he added.

GM Mexico announced that part of the investment of more than $1 billion USD will be used to expand the assembly and Global Propulsion Systems sectors of the Ramos Arizpe industrial complex, which will be retooled to produce the company’s new vehicle architectures. The plant will manufacture electric vehicles of various GM brands, batteries and other electrical components.

The Ramos Arizpe’s contribution to GM’s zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion vision will begin during the second half of this year, with the manufacture of drive units that will equip next-generation electric vehicles such as the GMC Hummer EV and the Cadillac Lyriq. At this time, it’s unclear which EVs will be manufactured in the Mexican plant starting in 2023.

The Ramos Arizpe plant currently employs 5,600 workers and manufactures the Chevy Blazer and Chevy Equinox crossovers, as well as engines and transmissions. In addition to producing units for the local Mexican market, the complex exports vehicles and components to more than 40 countries around the world.

GM is going to be building Hondas in Mexico. So technically, GM is bringing jobs from Japan back to North America.
Your job will be going to a non-union worker in Marysville Ohio. When Honda starts building Chevys at its plants.

            1. Most likely the Honda-based Chevrolets will be built at a GM plant.

    2. Sorry to break it to you, the workers at this plant get paid $16 per hour per the new NAFTA agreement… And GM can build cars there for export to europe without tariffs which I am sure Honda requested since they plan to export the vehicle GM builds for them

      1. Firstly, it’s not called NAFTA anymore, it’s called USMCA. Secondly, This deal requires that only 40-45 percent of auto content from Mexico be made by workers earning at least $16 per hour. So, the average Mexican autoworker makes SUBSTAINTIALLY less. But Mary Antoinette Barra and The Big Guy really don’t care about progressing people out of poverty.

        2. this is a payoff from biden to mary to cover the losses they will have when the new green deal is in full force in the USA and GM is looking at dealers lots full of unsold BEVs

        3. USMCA’s key thing is the % of the content within the car went up to 75%, BUT it must be made in North America (Mexico, USA, Canada). Leaving the door wide open for American companies to manufacture in Mexico.
Here is the problem, GM is a profit-making business and will result to the location with the least overhead. End result, this article right here.

      2. The wage has to be an AVERAGE of $16 an hour under USMCA. That means a worker in the US can make $28 an hour while the worker in Mexico can make $4 an hour.

  3. Looks like the Equinox will be displaced from this plant and CAMI-the Blazer as well. Hopefully some of this work will come to underutilized plants in the Unlike Orion, and to a lesser extent Fairfax, and Lansing Grand River.

    1. Equinox is going fully to Mexico. It will no longer be produced at CAMI. I’m not sure if it’s this plant or San Luis Potosí but it will be fully built in Mexico.

      1. A shame. Hopefully Blazer will move to the US. Orion, Fairfax, and LGR could use more product.

        Reply
        1. Orion is 100% electric and is a dedicated small/compact car shop. Build the Blazer? Not likely.

  5. People love to complain when work goes to Mexico, but wouldn’t bat an eye if the same announcement was made for a Canadian plant.

    Reply
    1. Because the Canadian’s are skilled workers who get paid a decent wage.

      Reply
      1. And how are the Mexicans at this facility less skilled than the comparable Canadian doing the same job?

Provide us detail that shows us how much less these workers are getting. Also show us their cost of living so we can see how badly GM treats these employees.

        1. Education = critical thinking = skill. Quality of life index and education rankings are all substantially higher in Canada and the US than in Mexico… Mary Barra sending jobs over there is only done to increase profit margins. It’s definitely not to improve product quality or the quality of life for Mexicans… Next time do your own research on the matter.

    Reply
    1. Agree, I am not for or against the union typically, but sometimes the union only hears the side of the conversation they want to hear. Cars built for Honda at this plant will be exported to Europe, meaning if assembled in the USA have to pay tariff, if people do not like having jobs in Mexico, get rid of the tariffs that make US build cars uncompetitive, OH ya, but that might come with other consequences.

    1. I hope Biden has a plan to organize all the BKs and Micky D’s. That is the only jobs that will be created when his job-killing environmental regulations and higher taxes drive more industry to third-world nations. But I guess one could think of fast food as green jobs- look at the plant-based crap they are substituting for meat, and of course the money that is paid to workers is technically green in color.
