General Motors designer Brian Malczewski has shared the first design sketch that he completed of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV on his Instagram page, giving us a sneak peek into the design process of the new battery-electric off-roader.
Malczewski is a lead exterior designer at GM and was responsible for the exterior design of both the GMC Hummer EV pickup truck and SUV. He first started working on the styling of the new off-roaders about two years ago, refining the designs over time as GM decided which aspects of the vehicle would make it to production and which would be left on the drawing board.
This is the first-ever sketch of the GMC Hummer EV SUV that Malczewski completed and, as we can see, it looks quite a bit different than the production-ready model that debuted this year. The dimensions and side profile are similar, but the front and rear ends are decidedly different. His sketch has a different grille/front light bar, roof-mounted orange market lights and Hummer H1 and H2-inspired handles on the hood. The rear, meanwhile, has three-segment LED taillights split into two different sections, a cover for the full-size spare tire and a hump in the tailgate that appears to be inspired by a fuel canister.
“Helluva past couple years,” Malczewski said in the description for the design sketch, which he shared on his personal Instagram page this week. “These were some of the first sketches I did for the Hummer EV program – the SUT and SUV were designed simultaneously. Super happy to be a part of this team and the launch. Can’t wait to see these on the road, the proportions are pretty wild.”
The design of the GMC Hummer EV is different from the c-pillar rearward compared to the pickup – particularly the rear end, where Malczewski says the vehicles’ “personality and versatility really shine.” This is, in-part, thanks to the full-size spare tire, which helps communicate to other road users that this isn’t just any SUV – but a highly capable one that is prepared for whatever a backcountry trail can throw at it.
The GMC Hummer EV won’t enter production until 2023, so it will be quite a while before were able to see Malczewski’s design in the real world. He also designed the GMC Hummer EV pickup, however, which will enter production at the GM Factory Zero plant this fall, with the first customer deliveries set to commence before the end of the year. We can’t wait to see one out on the road, Brian.
