General Motors has received a 2021 Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award for its efforts to implement green energy solutions at its various manufacturing plants in the United States.
The Sustained Excellence award is the highest honor given out by the Energy Star program, which is run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The organization says winners of this award “have made a long-term commitment to fighting climate change and protecting public health through energy efficiency, and are among the nation’s leaders in driving value for the environment, the economy and the American people.”
This is the tenth consecutive year that GM has received an Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award from the EPA and U.S. DoE. The automaker has been working to reduce its environmental impact for more than a decade, reducing its carbon output by 20 percent between 2010 and 2017. Earlier this year, GM CEO Mary Barra said the automaker’s U.S. facilities would run off 100 percent renewable energy by as early as 2030. Additionally, GM’s global facilities will use 100 percent renewables by 2035, while the entire company as a whole will be fully carbon neutral by 2040.
GM has accelerated its environmental goals in recent months, implementing a plan to eliminate tailpipe emissions from all of its new light-duty vehicles by 2035. A whopping 40 percent of the automaker’s North American vehicle portfolio will be EVs by 2025, as well. These EV products will include electric versions of large vehicles that would typically be considered gas guzzlers, like the GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV and Chevy Silverado EV, for example.
“Being honored by the EPA as an Energy Star award winner for the 10th year is a recognition of the people at General Motors who are committed to creating a zero-emissions future,” the automaker’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Kristen Siemen, said in a statement. “We work to integrate sustainable practices in everything we do, prioritizing efforts to reduce energy consumption and energy intensity across our operations to help reduce our environmental impact.”
Other major corporations that received an Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award for 2021 include Nissan North America, Verizon, MetLife, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Target.
