Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Silverado sales during the first quarter of 2021 place the truck in third place in its competitive set. The Ford F-Series (see Ford F-series sales) was in first, outselling the Silverado by 77,206 units, while the the Ram Pickup took second, outselling the Silverado by 22,245 units.
Previously, the Silverado overtook the Ram in Q1 2020 to reclaim its typical spot as the second best-selling vehicle in its segment. However, this trend shifted for the remaining three quarters of the 2020 calendar year. The decrease in Silverado sales this quarter enabled the Ram to remain in second place, since its sales volume grew by nearly 16 percent.
The only other model to report a decrease in sales volume this quarter was the Toyota Tundra at nearly 12 percent. All other full-size trucks reported an increase in year-over-year sales volumes during the first quarter of 2021, with the Nissan Titan reporting the largest gain of over 30 percent.

The GM Authority Take
It’s unfortunate to see Chevy Silverado sales dwindle and fall to third place during Q1 2021 as a result of:
- Strong performance by the F-150: Q1 2021 represented the first full quarter that the all-new, 2021 Ford F-150 was on sale. Aside from widely-reported rust issues, the Ford offering saw a positive reception that’s clearly reflected by the 9 percent uptick in sales volume.
- Even stronger performance by the Ram Pickup, which posted a 15.5 percent gain.
We posit that product-related factors are holding back Silverado sales. Luckily, a heavy refresh of the Silverado 1500 is on the way for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Silverado will feature a new front and rear fascia design, new wheel designs, and a few new exterior colors. Critically, the refresh will also introduce completely a overhauled interior, with a new dash, center stack, center console, fully digital gauge option, and the deletion of the column shifter. Additionally, the range-topping High Country model is expected to offer GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system, and the Trail Boss model is expected to gain a more capable variant, likely to be called Trail Boss ZR2.

One word: Supply
Exactly, none of the dealers have much inventory, also customers in the know are waiting for the refresh models this fall.
Waiting for the refresh? If customers “in the know” are waiting for a refresh (the majority) that means only one thing: Total failure in design. The HD is a disaster with the ugly grill and the whole truck line is a massive failure. GM getting crushed by Ram after an all new design? Uh-oh Spaghettios!
Ram hit a home run and this generation is transformational for the brand. Ram has always been an afterthought with low transaction prices and weak sales, but that’s over due to this generation being a near perfect product with both the best interior and exterior design.
I’m also convinced that Jeep is a halo for Ram with Cherokee and Grand Cherokee leading the pack at an elevated price ahead of Chevrolet, Ford or Toyota. This halo with only get bigger with the Wagoneer sub brand and a generation of Opel or Peugeot Peugeot rebadged Chrysler.
Chevy isn’t attracting the Buy America crowd with it’s focus on China & stunts Silverado in favor of Big Red Sierra. We’ve entered the Mercedes Benz, luxury appointments and appearance, of pick ups and GM’s evoluntion and knee capped Silverado doesn’t cut it.
One word: Management!
Bob, why don’t you do something about that faulty eight speed transmission, maybe that would help too…
I have a 2021 Silverado with a faulty 8 speed transmission. The dealer does not know how to repair it and GM refuses to acknowledge that there are issues with the newer 8L90 transmissions. I think GM should repair it or replace the transmission like they used to do when Chevrolet was the 1st in sales. I guess I am stuck with a lemon. GM has got to do better with their customers, or fall back further in the sales race. I have owned GM vehicles exclusively for over 50 years, but I will consider a Ram next time.
Not only do they have a transmission problem have an engine problem with their VVT as soon as I get back to making a solid engine and a silent transmission instead of his Voodoo garbage he’ll be back on top and by the way I own 24 trucks and cars I presently have 2 3/4 ton high top Vans a 454 pickup 1979 original loaded Silverado DTS Cadillac 2011 the last good when they made a Cavalier with 200,000 miles on it and all I’ve done is change oil and filter 2 SS Impalas so I’m well-versed with GM also with there stupidity they don’t make the Transmissions and if they would listen to the manufacturer it would have all these problems it was just like the Allison in the Diesels I personally know who made them worked at a dealership and call them long-distance to find out how to fix it and they told me we told GM that transmission would do what they want to do I followed your instructions and guess what I’ve had happy satisfied customers GM needs to go back to the basics
I assure you, my grandson’s Camaro also has the piece of crap 8 speed auto which gm says slipping is “normal”. Never in history has a slipping automatic trans been “normal”. I think some judges might be getting some funny munny. Either that or they’ve never driven a “normal” vehicle before.
Keep telling yourself that. Just ignore that it places in last place in every comparison as well.
Here we go with the segregation again, pity!
Wait, do I see that Silverado + GMC sold more units than Ford???? Also, as someone looking to purchase a new 2500, and wanting it in the custom trim, supply is almost non existent. None on any local dealer lots, few and far between on Autotrader, and this online are MARKED UP! Normally they entice you with 3-5k off msrp. Right now some units are listed 2k OVER. GM has been hammered with this generation of truck with a strike right after launch, pandemic, now chip shortage. Given their luck on the production line, they’ll probably see a steel mill fire next or something.
Another good reason to get rid of unions.
You don’t know a damned thing about union people. You would be more informed if you took a hard look at a company who builds failed 8 speed automatics year after year after year and tells their customers “It’s normal for an 8 speed automatic to jerk, slip between shifts and shudder from the factory” then letting them leave the dealership with their clunky junk as they are stuck for years making payments on the vehicle they have learned to hate. Or maybe the cheap Chinese made cracking plastic instrument panels that inly last 3 years. That is not union, it is piss poor engineering and poor management.
I know plenty about unions and will say it’s a combination of both. If you think your union cares about their workers any more than the due they bring in you’re dead wrong. The auto union is one of the most corrupt in the business and that’s saying a lot.
True, look at all the federal indictments.
“Corrupt unions”? ONE WORD, TEACHERS!!!
I used to support all teachers, NO MORE. Non-union teachers only from now on, I would be ballistic if I had school age kids and I think the California teachers unions should be banished from this earth for ever and I wouldn’t stop in CA.
My union experience? It was Pathetic, so I left it behind, I chose quality of life over all the 💩.
I have not and will not speak to even one of the pathetic UNION co-workers I previously worked with ever again. I know not all unions or union workers are the same, but most of the ones I worked with were 💩. The higher their seniority the bigger the pile of 💩 they were. And yes, there were even union reps getting nailed for money “corruption”.
This place was the shop against the workers and the workers against them selves. Three 12hr. shifts, 2/3/2, work 7 off 7 in a two week cycle, (wk-1 2/3/2 wk-2 3/2/3). But the low seniority guys would never get all their days off, always got screwed to only get one day. On top of that everything (machines, set-up, cleanup, paperwork) was left in shambles, “let the next guy deal with it”. Pathetic human beings.
Never again!
As far as transmissions go, tune them for performance and all the problems go away correct?
Blame the EPA or Obama/Biden.
I thought Obama gave 50% of Gm to the unions in the last downturn. Unions drain companies dry with their greed.
Can you provide a link or tso?
Oh, no! The troll is back!
GM is the problem, not the union. Ford and Chrysler are also union made.
General Motors still can’t figure out said if they made an LTZ Limited with the same interior appointments as a Denali with a 6.2 engine and not that 6 liter slug they would have sold more trucks and they can shake a stick at but they forever shoot themselves in the foot you got Bean counters trying to run a company and it’s not working out real well
This wouldn’t be the case if they refreshed for the 2021 model like GM authority originally reported.
Likely this would be the case either way, GM only has so many microchips to use during the crisis, so if they built more trucks might be less SUV’s which are more profitable. Refresh is coming this fall, hopefully reveal in May.
I think it’s time for Chevy to change their start/stop functionality so it doesn’t have to be turned off every time you start the truck. Absolutely ridiculous EPA pandering. I’m not opposed to the feature being there but if you turn it off then it should stay off.
They may not have a choice. Our Betters In Washington mandate all of this junk, and there may be something about it defaulting to “on” at startup.
Don’t hold your breath but that Mickey Mouse Drive systems they got for the overhead valves get ready another brilliant disaster
Yeah, stupid EPA. Who needs electronic engine management, anyway? Carbs, points, and condensers all the way, baby! That’s how you get performance!
Carbs?
Yeah, who needs to breathe fresh air? Who needs to live near the oceans as they rise and cover almost every port city? Yeah, who needs all that stuff. Let’s go back to the 70’s and polluting everything. Let our children and grand children deal with it all. (sarcasm).
1970 Hot Rod Magazine the took all. The smog crap off of 350 including the infamous catalytic converter having tune the motor correctly with the right kind of exhaust system guess what they passed California air standards without all that garbage don’t talk to me about fresh air it’s government government has something to do with it it’s an absolute garbage parade
I bring it up every time this happens. I’d reeeeeally like to see the sales breakdown of new Ram Rams vs new Ram Ram Classics. Nothing wrong with their practice of selling multiple generations but allowing people to believe their new truck is outselling (and is therefore more desirable than) GM’s new trucks is misleading and has the foul stench of desperation.
I can give you a rough idea…of Ram 1500 sales, about 20% were Classics in 2020.
“Chevy Silverado Sales Place Third In Segment” … Yeah it’s a nice way of saying “Silverado wins the wooden spoon”, when you consider there’re only two other significant rival.
If one adds in the Chevrolet pickups sold by non-Chevrolet agencies, aka, “GMC’, they are in very good shape.
Except….they never used to need to add in GMC to be in 2nd place. Silverado used to easily do it on its own. Add in Colorado, Express, Malibu, Equinox, and Traverse sales and it’s probably the best-selling model in the country.
RAM is a much better product. The new F-Series too.
GM did a terrible job with the twins. I hope the refresh help them, but may be too late…
It hurts me to say this, but you are correct, the other 2 are better packages today in some ways, but the refresh is coming soon, and that will put GM back in a competitive position. I was at the Detroit show and saw the GM Execs faces when they first saw the current Ram interior at the unveil, you could tell they knew they brought a knife to a gun fight. Never too late however, and GM has been far more profitable than either of those 2 other companies which gives them the $$ win. Not to make excuses, but GM just ran out of time on the 2019 Silverado rollout and did not have time to validate and install the new electrical architecture which is needed for the new interior, and features like digital dash, electronic shift and Supercruise. It’s all coming in the refresh, and from my experience in the 2021 SUV’s it puts GM on top when it comes to tech integration.
Donavan,
When I say Silverado is the worst pickup of the three, it isn’t because I’m a Ford or RAM guy. I’m a GM guy indeed, and the Silverado is the worst of the three, followed by the Sierra. It is a fact. But you can’t say it here.
The T1 Silverado failed in the design department. The front end is ugly, the rear is horrific, the suspension feels bad, the interior is worse than the K2 ones.
GM failed and they know it, RAM surprised them. GM didn’t applied its effors, and that’s how they are losing market share every year since the 80s. But here we always see excuses. The chip shortage and supply problems affected only GM?
Loyalty is a key factor in the truck market, but it isn’t the only one. Many people just want a better product, and it is the reason why Silverado is losing market share throughout the years and RAM is gaining it. I really hope the refresh bring them back to a competitive position.
GM gave up the cars to give attention to the trucks. It can’t fail again.
I am also a GM guy, but more of a GMC buyer. I have a 2020 HD, and think it looks fine, a bit too tall for my liking, but it tows like a son of a gun, by far the most solid tow vehicle I have ever driven, and I have driven the last gen Super Duty a lot. The Duramax, and 10 speed is just an outstanding powertrain. Strongest Pulling HD, and best fuel economy on the highway. The 2020 GMC also has the quietest interior I have ever heard in a diesel pickup, I bought a db meter to test it and was amazed, at 70 MPH it is quieter inside than my Tesla by 3 db (which is a lot), thats a real achievement for a diesel pickup. I drag a 16K lb trailer around like it is nothing, Now the interior is comfortable, but not the best in class for look and feel, but for HD buyers more disappointing is the lack of driver assistance like Supercruise, but that is coming soon. Now, is it really a failure? GM has added HD market share, with this generation truck, and every owner I talk to loved the truck, but thought the interior needs refreshed. GM is also charging more for this generation, so I have to dispute it being a failure in the market. Nationwide most dealers have 0 HD inventory, and Flint plant has been on OT for the last 18 months. It seems to me you are just emotional, and while some or your points make sense its not the end of the world, and help is coming soon, you don’t like the current truck, don’t buy one, but that does not make it a failure, have you compared GM, and Fords or Ram’s financials? Looks to me like GM is going just fine.
You are incorrect 100%. The hemi is ancient (2009) the only truck motor older than it is the Toyota (2007). The 5.3 is a good motor and has the same torque and power as the hemi under 3000 rpm. Ram is on an older chassis platform. The 2019 denali and high country saw the removal of magnetic ride control and replaced with dynamic shocks, YET still saw improved ride control because the T1 platform is that damn good. The interior of the WT, LT and even high country trim is superior in the silverado than the comparable Ram trim. GM has no trim level comparison with the limited rams and ford’s. A ram limited starts higher than a Denali. Infact to get a Denali to be the same price as the limited ford and rams, you need the carbon pro package. Then these trucks are almost incomparable except for price. One a plush interior, the other the beastly 6.2 and 10 speed, multi-pro tailgate, indestructible look same as new after 10 years of abuse bed, superior NVH levels. Motor trend and car and driver just bash the chevy truck interiors because ram bought all their advertising and decided to ignore all the ram shortcomings. But if you want a plush ride, please don’t go buy the ram, buy a cadillac or lincoln. And the market disagrees with you mate. Combined GM sales beat ram and ford. Even with GM’s supply shortages.
Jacob, you have Kool-Aid on your shirt.
Previously, you didn’t need to combine any sales for Silverado to be 2nd, way ahead of Ram. So as you said, the market proves it. You’re wrong.
You sum Silverado + Sierra and can’t reach Ford.
Chevy has always been ahead of RAM. It’s a shame.
No surprise at all, anyone that can’t figure out why Ram outsold Chevy needs to go and check the Dealer lots and see for themselves, there is practically NO inventory on GM lots! I can take you to 8 dealerships within 100 miles from where I live and it’s no surprise to see only 1 (one) new truck or actually even (NONE) and if you see one with 4 or 5 you’re doing good and the one dealer in Florida (1100 miles from where I live) told me it’s going to get worse before it gets better. So it’s not just in my area. Not sure why it’s GM and not the other brands but Ford and Ram dealers will have 20 or more trucks to choose from. Those may even be down from what they used to have earlier but there still is a decent selection to choose from compared to GM, The same goes for GM’s new Full size Sport Utillities, I will do good if I see (one) Suburban or Tahoe on a lot! Then I read that the new Cadilac Escalade is the Fastest selling vehicle, meaning it’s the vehicle that sells the quickest once it hits a dealer’s lot. Imagine what GM numbers would be if they had inventory! But if you ask me, that’s why Ram outsold Chevy and lost a bigger margin to Ford. I’m wondering if we will see the other two brands dwindle as well. On a different note, I currently have a big piece of Equipment sitting at one of the train yards in California….initially we were supposed to have it in February but now they are holding it out there and they have no idea when it will be released for shipment. There is something crazy going on in our Country right now and I’m afraid it’s called “AN AGENDA”!!
Poor sales are due to crappy interior! New interior can’t get here soon enough, sales will be in the crapper till then.
The interior excuse is lame, I agree ram has nicer interiors but that’s not the big picture here. You can’t sell something if you don’t have it.
Agreed, especially because when comparing the tradesman to the custom, the LT to the bighorn, the LTZ to the Laramie, I’d take the GM interior all day. it’s only in the limited trim that ram blows away competition. Most trucks are sold in that midrange trim. GM excells here
Poor sales? GM is selling selling every truck they build, go look for one at your local dealer… Ram and Ford just have more production, but that will change once GM finishes the refit of Oshawa, and gets beyond the chip shortage.
I’m not a big truck guy and normally don’t even read these. But I find it interesting how different the comments are on this article (about the full sized trucks and sales) vs. the Colorado article and the mid-sized truck sales. On that article, you have all the pom-pom waving Toyota Tacoma people saying how bad the GM twins are and why the Taco sells so many more trucks. Then come to this article, and the conversation is so different.
One of my comments on that Colorado sales article was about when you add all the truck sales together from each company and how Toyota then runs for the hills with it’s tail between it’s legs. My comment didn’t go over too well. But now look at this article and the sales where the Ford is roughly 10x the Tundra. Chevy/GMC about 9x the Tundra. Ram is about 7x the Tundra. And let’s not even talk about the Nissan! Where are the Toyota fan boys now?
And let’s remember this is the segment where the true profits are made.
It’s not about being a Toyota fanboy. You’re comparing apples to grenades. The Tacoma crushes GM trucks in sales because of its design and long and storied reputation with its resale. This market has been Toyota’s wheelhouse for decades. The Colorado hasn’t earned the same reputation, in fact has been hurt on quality issues.
Conversely, the full-sized trucks are a completely different vehicle with different customers. Toyota is not trying to beat Ford and GM and they know it. It’s an also-ran that allows them to expand their customer base to bring more people to other Toyota products. And many Toyota customers simply don’t want to buy an F-150. Toyota is under no illusion that one day they’re going to be the number one selling full-sized truck.
The small GM trucks have a better seating position and ride, but that hasn’t been enough to convert Tacoma buyers. It’s a tall hill to climb for GM in the short term.
The largest Chevy dealer in North America, north of Des Moines, has a nearly vacant lot. The facility is 40 acres and typically has hundreds of new trucks. My wife and I drove through a week or so ago and counted 12 Silverado’s. Most had sold tags hanging from the rearview mirror. A Ford dealer is part of the same complex and has over 100 new pickups but overall their inventories are lower than typical. I’ve never been bored enough to enter a Chrysler lot so I don’t know what the situation is there.
What happened to the last 3 years they’ve been out sold by Dodge for the last 3 years Dodge has been truck of the year for the last 3 years Chevrolet stand around with the thumb in their ear I don’t know who’s running the company but it’s not a car man
I know 3 ppl who bought the new RAMS. Each and everyone of them said that their was no comparison between the RAM and Chevy, all 1500s it came down to ride quality and the interiors. Let’s face it RAM blew Chevrolet away..
Like I said before GM is sorely lacking in a quality interior a tight cab and new little wrinkles that’s why Rams been number one for the last 3 years somebody needs to turn the light on at GM and see if anybody’s home
