Chevy Suburban, Tahoe Continue To Dominate Segment During Q1 2021

Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales increased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico during the first quarter of 2021.

Chevy Tahoe & Suburban Sales – Q1 2021 – USA

Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban sales in the U.S. increased over 14 percent to 34,181 units in Q1 2021, comprised of:

  • 23,038 units of the Tahoe, an increase of 13 percent compared to 20,403 units sold in Q1 2020, and
  • 11,143 units of the Suburban, an increase of 17 percent compared to 9,495 units sold in Q1 2020

Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban deliveries in Canada increased over 44 percent to 1,687 units in Q1 2021, comprised of:

  • 1,142 units of the Tahoe, an increase of over 63 percent compared to 699 units sold in Q1 2020, and
  • 545 units of the Suburban, an increase of nearly 16 percent compared to 471 units sold in Q1 2020

Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe deliveries in Mexico increased over 258 percent to 1,190 units in Q1 2021, comprised of:

  • 616 units of the Tahoe, an increase nearly 374 percent compared to 130 units sold in Q1 2020, and
  • 574 units of the Suburban, an increase of 184 percent compared to 202 units sold in Q1 2020

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The increase in Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales during Q1 2021 follows the 35 percent rebound in Q4 2020 which was proceed by a 21 percent decrease in Q3 2020. The performance enabled the two Chevy full-size SUVs to continue dominating the segment, with a combined 34,181 units sold, comprised of 23,038 units of the Tahoe and 11,143 units of the Suburban.

The Ford Expedition took second place in the segment with 22,263 deliveries (see running Ford Expedition sales), ahead of the Tahoe/Suburban’s corporate cousin – the GMC Yukon – in third place (see running GMC Yukon sales). It’s worth noting that Expedition sales figures include those of the regular-length Expedition (a Tahoe competitor) and those of the extended-length Expedition XL (a Suburban competitor), as does the GMC Yukon (Yukon and Yukon XL) while Tahoe and Suburban sales are reported separately.

On a combined basis, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales accounted for a dominant 40 percent segment share. The Ford Expedition came in second with 26 percent, and the GMC Yukon family saw a 22 percent segment share.

Taking into account the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, GM saw 52,639 segment sales for a very impressive 62 percent segment share during the quarter.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment expanded nearly 16 percent to 84,537 units in Q1 2021, meaning that the 14 percent growth in combined Suburban and Tahoe sales was in line with the segment average.

Thanks to the healthy increase in volume, Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales in the first quarter enabled the Bow Tie brand to maintain its long-standing position as the undisputed sales leader in the mainstream, full-size SUV sales.

We attribute the jump in Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe deliveries during Q1 to the following factors:

Going forward, we expect Chevy Suburban and Tahoe sales to continue to increase substantially, given that production/supply remains uninterrupted.

    1. I have a Yukon with the diesel, picked it up at end of January. Almost 10k miles later, I love it. Just got back from a 500 mile road trip, averaging 30 mpg.

  5. I just picked up my Yukon Denali Diesel a few weeks ago…..nice riding truck…..around town about 21 mpg……see GM raised the price on the delivery charge by $400.00 …..
