Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Spark sales performance during the first quarter of 2021 enabled the city car to continue as the best-selling model in its segment, outselling the Mitsubishi Mirage and Fiat 500, the latter of which has been discontinued in the U.S. market after the 2019 model year.

Sales Numbers - Mainstream City Cars - Q1 2021 - United States

MODEL Q1 21 / Q1 20 Q1 21 Q1 20 Q1 21 SHARE Q1 20 SHARE
CHEVROLET SPARK +23.02% 11,505 9,352 62% 65%

FIAT 500 -98.78% 4 327 0% 2%
TOTAL +28.73% 18,441 14,325

As a result of its dominant sales performance, the Spark also dominated the segment share, accounting for 62 percent of the sales volume, down 3 percentage points on an annual basis. Meanwhile, the Mirage held 38 percent while the Fiat 500 made up less than 1 percent. Notably, the Mirage was the only vehicle in the segment to grow its segment share on a year-over-year basis by posting sales growth of nearly 50 percent.

The mainstream city car segment expanded almost 29 percent to 18,441 units during Q1 2021, meaning that Spark sales slightly underperformed the segment average during the quarter.

The GM Authority Take

The rebound in Chevy Spark sales during Q1 2021 follows the trajectory experienced in December, during which time Spark deliveries jumped 60 percent, according to exclusive GM Authority intel.

Notably, Spark sales during Q4 2020 followed an increase in sales volume during Q3 2020, which represented a significant improvement over Q2 2020, when sales volume slipped as a result of availability-related complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. Too bad we can SEND the eco liberals who buy these things TO korea where they are made.

  2. Why the hate for this car?. It’s exactly what lower income people need and a gateway vehicle for more expensive vehicles. Not everyone in post Covid America need a 400hp aircraft carrier to go to work in a major city.

  4. I am not poor by any means, but ended up renting a Spark LT in San Antonio last fall. Boy were we IMPRESSED!! I currently own an Audi Q3 Quattro Prestige – but I actually LIKED the little Spark better. It had spunk, it was fun, and it was perfect for the city 7 parking, etc. GREAT car that I will now consider buying 🙂

  5. Also not poor. I got one last year from less than 11.5k out the door. A 5 spd LS. Very fun. I change gears at like 4k rpm… Its not about the miles/gallon, but instead the smiles/gallon.

  6. The Spark is a seriously well engineered and assembled small car. I ‘m on my second model, having racked lots of miles in city and regional driving. It’s the first small car which I have owned that is comfortable for long distance driving. The driving position is excellent. I am a 61 year old Republican and not some eco extremist as interviewers allege I must be. The car is just appealing and sensible. I’ve received more than a few compliments on its looks, too.
