Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Equinox sales performance during Q1 2021 caused the model to fall one place to the fourth-best-selling spot in the segment, with the Toyota RAV4 taking first, the Honda CR-V taking second, and the Nissan Rogue (comprised of two models – the “regular” Rogue and Rogue Sport) claiming third.

The Equinox outsold all other contenders, including the Subaru Forester, Ford Escape (see running Ford Escape sales), Mazda CX-5 (see running Mazda CX-5 sales), Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan (see running VW Tiguan sales), the all-new Ford Bronco Sport, Kia Sportage, the Equinox’s corporate cousin – the GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales), Dodge Journey, Mitsubishi Outlander, and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

Of the 17 models in the segment, 10 saw an increase in sales while only six saw a decline; these include Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Mitsubishi Outlander, Dodge Journey, GMC Terrain, Ford Escape, and Chevrolet Equinox. Notably, the Equinox posted the lowest decrease in the segment with 14 percent while the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross posted the highest with 69 percent. The Ford Bronco Sport was not on sale during Q1 2020.

The Q1 2021 sales performance gives the Equinox a segment share of 9 percent, three percentage points less than what it held in Q1 2020. The performance places the Equinox’s segment share behind the 16, 13, and 12 percent commanded by the RAV4, CR-V, and Rogue, respectively.

The compact mainstream crossover segment expanded 15 percent to 696,174 units in Q1 2021, meaning Equinox sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The decline in Chevy Equinox sales during Q1 2021 comes after a 14 drop in Q4 2020 which followed a 15 percent decrease in Q3 2020, a 41 percent drop in Q2 2020 and a 17 percent drop in Q1 2020. Before that, the nameplate experienced yet another decline during Q4 2019 as a result of the 40 day-long UAW strike. Prior to the six consecutive declines in sales volumes, Equinox sales posted their best-ever third quarter sales performance in Q3 2019, preceded, by the model’s best-ever second quarter performance in Q2 2019, very healthy growth during Q1 2019, and a strong performance in Q4 2018.

We posit that Equinox sales continued to suffer in Q1 2021 as a result of the following factors:

  1. Internal competition from two newer two-row Chevrolet crossovers – the all-new Chevy Trailblazer and the Chevy Blazer. The Trailblazer is smaller than the Equinox but offers many of the same features for less, while the Blazer is larger yet also more expensive. In this regard, it’s possible that the Equinox is being “squeezed” from both ends by the newer and arguably more attractive Trailblazer and Blazer models.
  2. Higher-intensity competition in the mainstream compact crossover space. For instance, one of the major changes to the vehicle for the 2021 model year was the deletion of the more powerful turbocharged 2.0L LTG engine. As a result, it’s possible that buyers looking for more power are buying rival offerings. GM’s plan was to address the issue by giving the refreshed 2022 Equinox the turbocharged 2.0L LSY engine as an option. However, The General has since scrapped those plans.

GMC TERRAIN -33.11% 16,917 25,292 21% 26%
TOTAL -18.85% 80,135 98,745

It’s also worth noting that combining the 63,218 Chevy Equinox sales with the 16,917 deliveries of its corporate cousin and platform mate, the GMC Terrain, gives GM 80,135 combined deliveries in the compact crossover space. The result aren’t overly impressive, given that the RAV4, CR-V, and Rogue each sold more units than the Equinox and Terrain combined. The results also represent a sales drop of 19 percent.

FORD BRONCO SPORT * 23,356 * 36% 0%
TOTAL +33.73% 64,346 48,117

By comparison, GM’s cross-town rivals at the Ford Motor Company saw a 34 percent increase in sales within the segment after launching Bronco Sport – its second entry into the space.

That said, the RAV4 and Bronco Sport are an all-new model while the Equinox has been around since the 2018 model year. GM will soon launch the mid-cycle refresh for the Equinox, which was originally set to arrive as the 2021 Chevy Equinox. However, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the refresh to the 2022 model year (see more on the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox). The updated model will include revised exterior styling, a new Equinox RS trim level, and a few other enhancements that should increase the crossover’s competitiveness.

Going forward, we expect Equinox sales to see a rebound once GM introduces the 2022 model year refresh.

  1. Considering the Rav4 and Rogue are new, it’s a solid showing. Still disappointed the Malibu hybrid or volt tech never made it under the hood. I mean, it’s right there…

    1. You are expecting GM to be smart and logical.
Pigs will fly before that happens.

    2. I wouldn’t exactly consider the RAV4 new except for the Rouge except it’s popularity isn’t going to last long since it has the worst power in the industry, horrendous reliability, and slightly below average tech compared to American and German cars that were dropped at the same year but the Equinox needs to be redesigned bad and I think a lot more cars would beat the Equinox if they could figure out manufacturing

  2. Bring back the 3.4 V6 engine as an option. I have a 2009 Equinox and it still runs great.

    1. They’ll make it electric before that happens.

  3. Surprised they sold that many given how little effort has been put into the Equinox in the past few years.

I hear they are canceling another one of the engines offered by the Equinox. I’m sure that will help keep it behind Nissan and Honda.

  4. I have a 2011 with a 3.6 v6 and very happy with it . I would buy another if it had a HP equivalent to the 3.6 engine. With out that I will be looking at a different make and or model. With the anemic power plant I would not expect the Equinox share of the market will increase and it is a shame as I like the vehicle.

  5. I can tell with 100% assurance that when my lease is up on my 2019 Red Line with the 2.0, I will not go back to the Equinox and not having that 2.0 engine is the #1 reason.

    1. I also have a 2019 red line with 2.0 I have 1 year left on lease I also will be looking elsewhere if 2.o not offered

    2. Same here. Have a 2019 2.0T premier in the garage that we’re very happy with. Drove both engine options and the wife would have went with something else if the 1.5 was the only option.

  7. its not surprising.the nox is a good vehicle , but the announcement of no 2.0l and the delay of the 2021 update has not helped. Plus many dealers have little inventory.I have a 2019 Premier AWD and was looking for a 2021/ 22 with the 2.0l
its a shame , GM discontinued the Cruze, the Verano and now making the compact SUVs uncompetitive.

They are too focused on large pickup and electric vehicles , and leaving all other segments to the competition.
too bad for GM , so disappointed after driving GM for 47 years .

  8. I was going to buy a new equinox but you took all the desirable features away. If your going to kill the equinox just say so. I’ll buy from a company that values their customers and doesn’t limit my options. Others feel as I do but you aren’t interested.

  9. Just as I predicted. Killing off the engine options of the 2.0T and the diesel eliminated a big advantage these had on certain competitors. Leaving the lowest powered 170 HP engine as the only choice will limit sales to those wanting sportier driving models and better towing options. Poor management is taking away more and more reasons to consider buying a GM whoops gm product or cutting their noses off despite the face attitude.
