Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The  75 percent jump in Cadillac Escalade sales during the first quarter of 2021 is welcomed news after a  6 percent rebound during Q4 2020 which was proceeded by a 56 percent drop in Q3 2020. As such, the ‘lade remained (by far) the best-selling model in the full-size luxury SUV segment, with a dominant 48 percent segment share, meaning that the Escalade nearly outsold all rivals combined, including:

  • Lincoln Navigator (see Lincoln Navigator sales), which came in second place with 4,832 deliveries for a 24 percent segment share
  • Infiniti QX80, which took third place with 4,342 deliveries and 21 percent segment share
  • Lexus LX, which came in last place with 1,340 deliveries and 7 percent segment share

CADILLAC ESCALADE +75.13% 9,842 5,620 48% 35%

LEXUS LX +58.39% 1,340 846 7% 5%
TOTAL +28.11% 20,356 15,890

The full-size luxury SUV segment expanded 28 percent to 20,356 units in Q1 2021, meaning that the 75 percent growth in Escalade sales significantly outperformed the segment average. In fact, the Escalade’s performance represented the largest sales increase of all models in the segment.

Below, we’ve included sales figures of full-size luxury crossovers for the sake of reference. Though they differ mechanically from the aforementioned body-on-frame SUVs by having a unibody construction, they are typically cross-shopped and considered as alternatives. Currently, the only full-size luxury crossovers are the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and the new BMW  X7, though Audi is rumored to be working on a future Q9.

The GM Authority Take

In addition to experiencing a substantial 75 percent growth, the Escalade almost outsold all of its direct rivals on a combined basis during Q1 2021. We attribute the solid performance to extremely healthy acceptance of and interest in the all-new, 2021 Escalade.

The all-new model has been rolling off the line at the GM Arlington plant since Q3 2020. Assuming no interruptions to production and supply, we expect Escalade sales to continue increasing substantially as availability of the all-new model improves in the medium-term future. However, the ongoing semiconductor shortage might derail that scenario.

  2. wanted to say, next some liberal Democrat geek would chime in, “if only it was offered as an electric” , but Dovavan beat me to the punch, could not wait to criticize a big GM money maker that people really want . Where do these people come from? is there a “liberal hack” on every blog site? just saying, obvious not a real car person…

    1. Liberal Hack? Not a real car person? @Ned, I assure you I have forgotten more about cars, the car industry, performance cars, and racing than you will ever know… That being said, manufacturers have spent 100 years trying to make more power and a flatter torque curve with internal combustion engines, I know this as I have spent 1000’s of hours working on the dyno and know how hard it is. Now another powertrain comes along with a perfectly flat torque curve and almost unlimited power, oh an this new powertrain requires almost no maintenance, and has no parts rubbing together (wearing out) when making that power, and you think there is no passion? If you think going 0-60 in under 2.4 seconds in a Porsche Taycan is not exciting, you need to have your head examined. The quiet thrust is almost magical, now lets revisit my comment, are you so insecure that that you think my comment is insulting to the Escalade… Not at all… I said its a “heck of a nice ride” having driven it. The I added too bad its not an EV “yet”, it sure as hell will be soon, as I have seen the EV Escalade and it is shall we say “bad ass”.

Do you think to be a “real” car person you have to like noise and smoke? Oh, and going much slower? No Thanks, I want the best and fastest powertrain, and the fact it can fuel off my houses solar array is a huge bonus, So it beats anything you have driven in a race, I produce my own energy, and there is no noise or smoke, except maybe off the tires. Sign me up… Hence the reason GM is electrifying as many cars as they can, as fast as they can. Ned, your thinking is headed for extinction, I recommend you go drive an EV so at least you know what you are talking about, and do not look like such an idiot doing it.

  3. No EV vehicles!!! It’s going to take me forever to drive from Montana to California or Montana to Kentucky! There should be an option as it is now. You want EV you buy EV, you want diesel or gas powered vehicle you buy it.

    1. No problem driving cross country in an EV, but I agree with you, there should be choice, but the people driving the combustion vehicles should not complain about gas price because as volumes go down prices will increase.

      1. Not a problem driving cross country in EV? 8f you want to shill for EV fine, but don’t be ridiculous in your claims.

  4. Not nearly enough. Problem is much of the real competitors are not included in that list. It doesn’t make sense Lexus LX being on the list but bigger vehicles X7, GLS, R.Rover aren’t. Don’t come to me with body-on-frame vs unibody BS, it’s completely fictious nowadays, nobody buys those for off-roading, who cares about obscure technical details, customer profile for the luxury vehicles is all about lushness of the cabin and nothing else. Escalade has potential to crush all the competitors and dominate the segment by selling all the competition combine but GM can’t the see this and not pushing harder for campaigning and expanding the family into ultra luxurious trim levels.
