The GM Authority Take

The 2,627 Cadillac CT4 sales in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2021 were only 94 units shy of the 2,721 deliveries reported in the fourth quarter of 2020, which represented the best quarterly sales performance for the subcompact luxury sedan since its launch. The sales figures for the CT4 during 2020 were as follows:

The 2,627 CT4 deliveries during Q1 2021 represent a very healthy trajectory, one that we expect to continue well into subsequent quarters, so long as supply/production is uninterrupted.

It’s worth noting that the very first units of the CT4 began arriving at dealers during the second half of Q1 2020, but the launch was quickly followed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, which caused a two-month-long shutdown of GM production operations in North America, including the GM Lansing Grand River plant that produces the CT4. As a result, initial shipments quickly sold out, resulting in sub-par inventory going into the second and third quarters.

About The Numbers

  1. 4th place in sales wasn’t good enough for the CT6.

The CT4 will be canceled by August.

    1. You could be correct. But, having said that, I can’t believe a company would put that much time into design, engineering and putting the vehicle together and then just shut that down. I guess we’ll see.

      1. This is GM! They did with CT6 and it was #2 in sales…

        Reply
      2. You’re joking right! They put little or no effort in this so cancelling it won’t even be news worthy.

    2. Two completely different sized segments and sales figures. The CT6 was in the full size segment with around 50k in sales a year and only 10 competitors. The CT4 operates in the subcompact category with around 300k in sales and 23 competitors. So 4th place out of 23 is very strong, but 4th out of 10 isn’t bad either. Sales figures alone weren’t the determining factor for the CT6 being discontinued, the plant was being changed it was assembled at as well.

  2. Follow up comment: Having said that. It’s GM we’re talking about here. So you may be correct. They don’t seem to know how to direct their ship to find a shore.

    1. YEP!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Non Caddy buyers cry about it’s sales. The CT6 couldn’t maintain enough sales for the Detroit factory along with the Impala especially with GM needing the factory for EVs. The CT6 is still available in China. Maybe GM expands LGR for more ICE rwd car production since CT4/5 is having a bit of success.

    1. You raise an interesting point regarding Impala factory capacity. In 2016, the Impala, LaCrosse and XTS were effectively the same car, yet they were assembled at three different plants. I never understood why they did that unless their marketing and sales projections were so far off the mark that they wrongly assumed they would sell many more than they actually did.

    2. GM/Cadillac had to have previously known that the Full Size Luxury Sedan segment isn’t a huge volume seller yet MB, Audi & BMW continue their offerings – importing them at great expense no less. So what is GM’s excuse?

      Reply
      1. It isn’t an excuse, the Chinese bought 22,000 CT6 in the middle of the pandemic, not here. The imports wish they can move 500k big SUVs in America like GM could, as said I do which the CT6 to return to the US after it’s redesign.

        Reply
        1. Not sure how you’re connecting the dots with your response.

The comparison is faulty as the CT6 was canceled in N.A. before the Pandemic so it couldn’t be sold save for residual inventory.

For the 3 sales years (2017, 2018, 2019) MB moved a cumulative total of less than 44K units of the segment leading S Class in N.A.. So again to my point that the full size luxury segment is not a volume seller. And yet a new tech laden S Class is on the horizon for N.A.. This besides the luxury EV offerings that will be offered by MB.

So again, what is GM’s excuse?

And save for the mid engine Corvette, selling badge engineered SUVs across three name plates is GM’s current calling card.

          Reply
          1. Pandemic?, where you get that from?. You can cumulative number all you want the CT6 sales still was not enough to keep Dham to run the factory to run low production sedans, S-Class is sold worldwide and even it’s sales is shrinking with the S coupe history this year. The Vette is using GM truck parts (mainly engine) to keep it going as GM in America runs off truck production. As said maybe LGR can get more ICE rwd sedans before the game is over.

            1. This is GM being referred to so best believe the numbers were ran before the CT6 came to market.

              Reply
              1. What ran numbers?, the CT6 was available since ’16, as said the Chinese are buying them them in sustainable numbers

                Reply
                1. By default, GM ran the numbers – as any company would before pushing a product to market. Again the full size luxury car isn’t a high volume segment in N.A. prior to the pandemic and after; GM was already aware. And the CT6 actually was 2nd in sales to the S Class for a minute before GM pulled the plug.

Referencing how the Chinese market performed is comparing apples to plums.

Boils down to GM more so chasing the dollars and not giving consideration to giving Cadillac the products needed to be perceived as a formidable luxury marque.

      2. So you’d buy a CT6 if GM imported them from China?

        Reply
        1. Nope, read my 1st reply. The Celestiq with it’s $200k price leaves room for a CT6.

  4. why is the acura ILX on this list and the lexus IS isn’t?

    Reply
    1. Because the Acura ILX is a C-segment entry and the Lexus IS is a D-segment entry (CT5 rival).

Acura’s D-segment entry is the TLX.
Lexus currently does not have a C-segment model. In the past, that was the job if the HS and CT.

      Reply
      1. so what is the lexus ES? doesn’t that compete with the ct5?

        lexus basically has small(IS) medium(ES) and large(LS)

        same with cadillac ct4, ct5, and ct6.

also, the ilx starts at $26K. on price alone, that deserves to be in the premium space not luxury.

      2. Alex, any idea how many CT4’s GM will have to sell each year to consider making a second generation of the vehicle? It’s not supposed to sell in huge numbers like a Malibu or a Cruze, so the only gauge we have is how close it is to the number one seller in the segment. Thanks.

  5. Come on, CT4, you beat 2 German stalwarts, next up is the tarted-up Civic. Even with Acura’s rep for quality, not sure how they are getting away with a warmed-over Civic.

  8. Considering this is a D segment vehicle drop-out, competing downmarket on pricing in the C-segment, I’m gonna research to find how it would’ve fared against the 3 series, A4 and C Class of which the ATS aka CT4 was originally targeted.

  11. I just don’t understand Cadillac’s Model Placement. It seems like Previous Generation ATS/CTS sells were so low, for the New Generation, they decided to bring them down a segment ( while maintaining the same dimensions or larger) so match last generations sales figures to match the segment they are in now… “SO…. the CT4 doesnt sells as well as the 3 Series Compact so were just gonna Class it as a 2 Series Sub Compact and hope we fool people to think were doing well”

    Reply
    1. Exactly. I don’t see what there is to gloat about with the sales performance of the CT4.

It’s competing downmarket because GM didn’t devote sufficient engineering dollars for the vehicle to keep pace with it’s intended vehicle segment.

  12. That profile pic of the red Ct4 is one of the better shots I have seen of this car, it looks great has a nice look to it. I had the opportunity to have an ATS- V model, and that car was a blast it was so well balanced it had great handling prowess, and a great engine it also had menacing looks. I think the CT4 will come into light as they get the V models out on it, it seems like with Cadillac there hearts are in the V models, and Escalade and nothing else. I am looking to test a CT4-V or even a CT5-V but I know those cars will be picked up and sold very fast. The sad thing is this could be a world leading in sales but Cadillac wouldnt give a damn because they are so pricked on electric vehicles that is the sad thing.

  13. Oh C’mon why does people keep buying fail wheel drive understeering torque steering Germans over the CT4? CT4 is rear wheel drive more reliable, more bank for the buck, more fun to drive, easier and cheaper to maintain, better proportion and nicer to look at etc. There is no reason for any rational people to buy those essentially gussied up corolla. When Cadillac made the CImmaron people were furious (and for a good reason). But when zee Germans do the same people just look the other way and don’t complain

  14. I owned a 2017 ATS Luxury. It was a great car. But I had problems with my Info screen. Were the Back up Camera would go Blue screen some of the time. After taking it to the dealer four times they could not fix the problem. And after telling the dealership this is a lemon. Two weeks later I get a call from G.M. saying we are going to buy your car back. This was right before the Plandemic hit. So I stopped by the dealership and test drove a CT5 with the 2.0 motor. And it was so slow and all noise after the 2.0 L I had in my ATS. So I was just going to take a check. But then they released the CT4-V So there was some hope to stay a Cadillac owner with the 2.7 L. So I went to order a replacement 2020 car. But I could not get it in red and only Black or White In the early stages of the Covid-19 so I backed out. Then the Chip shortage hit as well. So I had to wait longer. Then I found out that they were going to release Super Cruise and the updated to the new digital dash. So I waited for the dust to clear. And 22 months later. My CT4-V was delivered to me. The car has all options and is Amazing….And Super Cruise is Incredible and makes long drives so fun. G.M. really took care of me. I had my ATS for four years and it only cost me $2,100 to drive the car for 4 years and 45,000 miles. I am so Impressed with the CT4-V and so glad I waited to work thru the long process to get it ! G.M. gave me back all money I spent on the ATS. And in the end they paid for half of the 65,000 to get my Dream car.
