In June 2020, GM Authority exclusively featured the technical and strategic details of the impending 2022 Buick Envision GX – the next member of the renewed Buick utility vehicle family. After being spotted with less camouflage and being completely leaked in early March, the three-row version of the second-generation Buick Envision could debut this month in China.
Sources familiar with the matter inform us that the all-new 2022 Buick Envision GX should make its world debut during the next 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, the first international exhibition of the automotive industry scheduled for this year that will open its doors from April 21st to the 28th. This would contrast with the regular Envision, which was first announced in North America and later as “Envision S” in China.
As with the standard second-generation Envision, everything seems to indicate that the upcoming 2022 Buick Envision GX will have a distinct name for the Chinese market. Although the image of the rear that was leaked last month in China is very low resolution, some local media claim that the insignia worn by the seven-seat variant of the compact crossover is “Envision Plus.”
In any case, this new crossover will be the third member of the Buick Envision lineup available in China. Buick’s range of compact-sized utility vehicles in the Asian country begins with the refreshed first-generation Envision that serves as the base model, followed by the second-generation model known as Envision S, and will soon be completed with the new three-row Envision Plus.
The upcoming 2022 Buick Envision GX / Plus measures 190.7 inches long, 74.1 inches wide and 67.1 inches high, riding on an extended 111.5-inch wheelbase. It shares much of its front design with the standard Envision, including the same headlight and hood shape, but the grille is larger, the horizontal bar connects the headlights, and the bumper is unique.
The 2022 Envision GX’s side profile adopts a larger rear door with a different shape, a third window between the C and D pillars, a straighter roofline and totally different rear overhang to accommodate the third row of seats. Mechanically, the crossover maintains the turbocharged 2.0L LSY I-4 engine with 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, mated to GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission.
The 2022 Buick Envision GX is expected to be a global vehicle and will also be unveiled sometime in 2021 in the United States. Unlike China, it will wear the GX suffix and will be the second member of the Envision family in that country, where the first-generation model stopped being sold. As such, 2022 Envision GX will be officially launched in the second half of the year in both China and North America.
