General Motors has officially debuted the 2022 GMC Terrain mid-cycle refresh, which brings updated exterior styling and a revised cabin to the crossover, along with a new off-road-focused AT4 trim level.
GM originally planned to introduce a mid-cycle refresh for the GMC Terrain for the 2021 model year, but setbacks brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to delay the updated crossover’s arrival until the 2022 model year.
The most apparent change made to the 2022 GMC Terrain is the newly restyled front fascia, which incorporates a larger reshaped grille, new C-shaped LED headlamps and a revised lower fascia with different foglights/daytime running lights. The crossover has also received a set of new LED taillights, as well.
Another major change is the addition of the AT4 trim level for the Terrain, effectively fulfilling GMC’s promise to bring an AT4 variant to every model it offers. The AT4 trim level gets a unique front fascia, gloss black painted wheels with off-road tires, a protective front skid plate and AT4 exterior badging. GMC promises further enhancements for the range-topping Terrain Denali model, as well, but details on the Denali are slim at the moment, with a market launch not scheduled until this fall. The Elevation Edition will also return for the 2022 model year for SLE and SLT trims.
Inside, the revised Terrain gets different available trim and fabric, standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a built in Amazon Alexa AI assistant and a new Technology Package for SLT and AT4 trims. Rounding out the changes is a new color head-up display, which is available on the SLT and AT4 and standard on Denali trim level.
As GM Authority reported previously, GM has decided to drop the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine from the Terrain line up for 2022. The only available engine now is the turbocharged 1.5 I4 LYX gasoline engine, which produces 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The GM nine-speed automatic returns and is the only transmission available in the crossover.
GMC says the redesigned 2022 GMC Terrain SLE, SLT and AT4 will be available this summer, while the 2022 GMC Terrain Denali will be available in the fall.

Yes envision built in China but in the beginning gm announced 2.0 l in the summer then no 2.0 litre who knows maybe gm will change there mind and hopefully 2. 0 l will make it again in the Terrain line up still early anything is possible with gm being so unpredictable we have another 7-8 month before the Terrain Denali makes it’s refresh debut. Wondering if gm reads any of these post from concerned future perspective gm buyers
I was actually excited for the AT4… Parents have an AT4 Acadia. It’s beautiful and hauls. I didn’t need that much space so I was considering the smaller version, but I still need something that can tow. Guess I’ll be looking elsewhere. Great job GM. Really, you’re so brilliant.
Totally agree with you I was also excited to purchase new refreshed terrain Denali for my needs but now 1.5 as much as I DONT want to purchase imports but I think that my only option. Really want to stick with gm product brother loves his 2020 Terrain denali and he never bought a domestic car in his life only reason cause of the 2.0 l engine in the Denali made a good choice . Gm really needs to listen to educated buyers
With that 1.5t engine, IMO, GM is erasing the Terrain from it’s offering and will have a slow death of low sales. Trying to make it like the Trailblazer.
