The compact mainstream crossover segment (C-crossover segment) contracted 6.43 percent to 696,172 units during Q4 2020, meaning that GMC Terrain sales fell faster than the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
GMC Terrain sales fell by nearly 3,000 units during the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. Even so, the Terrain posted one of the lowest loses in the segment during the quarter.
The Toyota RAV4, Subaru Crosstrek, Mazda CX-5, and Volkswagen Tiguan were the only four models in the segment to report an increase in sales. Meanwhile, the Terrain’s corporate cousin and platform mate, the Chevrolet Equinox (see Chevrolet Equinox sales), saw sales fall 14 percent during Q4 2020. Additionally, Nissan Rogue sales declined 23 percent, Dodge Journey sales were off 22 percent, while the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and Outlander sales declined 59 and 51 percent each, respectively. In the background of those figures, the Terrain’s 9 percent drop seems minuscule.
Sales of the Terrain (as well as of the Equinox) continued to be hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting GM as well as the entire automotive industry at large, just as it did in Q4 2020. We posit that the drop in Terrain deliveries was the result of the following factors:
- Sub-optimal supply: COVID-19 shutdown resulted in the idling of all GM factories across the Americas during the first half of 2020, including the GM San Luis Potosi plant that produces the Terrain. The circumstance resulted in the depletion of the most desirable Terrain supply at dealers. One of these is the Terrain Denali, which was not produced for the 2021 model year until only very recently.
- Lower demand: stay-at-home orders from the COVID-19 pandemic, along with negative impacts to the economy and spending power, resulted in lower demand during the third quarter.

TOTAL | -12.82% | 104,743 | 120,152 | -20.22% | 357,014 | 447,518 |
We should also note that combined sales of the two GM compact crossovers – the GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox – totaled 104,743 units for a 15 percent segment share. The numbers are impressive, but didn’t enable the duo to outsell the Toyota RAV4, which saw sales increase nearly 4 percent to 127,813 units during the quarter, for an 18 percent segment share.

The GMC Terrain AT4 is a new trim level that will launch with the refreshed Terrain lineup. The refreshed Terrain was originally slated to launch for the 2021 model year, but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It’s also worth pointing out that the Terrain was originally slated to get a midcycle enhancement (MCE) for the 2021 model year. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the launch of the updated model to be pushed back to the 2022 model year. The refresh includes revamped front and rear fascias, the addition of a rugged Terrain AT4 model, plus various other enhancements and new features. As a result of the delay, the 2021 model year gets only a few minor changes. See 2021 GMC Terrain changes and updates.

GM bring back the 2.0t engine. My Terrain with the 2.0t has plenty of power and gets over 30 mpg highway.
I’m sorry, but this Terrain is just ugly IMO. I don’t like the interior, the exterior or anything about it. When I got my 2018 Encore, they had a bunch of Terrain’s sitting around and 3 on the floor! I tried and tried to like them and sat in them. There’s just no way I could pull the trigger on one.
This pinched rear quarter panel thing really needs to go.
Omg 100% what Dan just said. That totally keeps it off my list.
“As a result of the delay, the 2021 model year gets only a few minor changes.”
That’s a major understatement. It lost the 2.0L engine.
Gmc could have sold me a new car this year but the motor is junk anb can not be repaired I need a reliable daily driver
