General Motors has announced a new Customer Satisfaction Program for certain examples of the 2021 model year Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 to replace the eight-speed automatic transmissions in the vehicles.
The problem: in affected Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 units, the eight-speed automatic transmission (RPO MQE) may have a broken reaction carrier ring.
The hazards: a reaction carrier is part of the transmission rotating assembly and is an important aspect of its operation. A broken reaction carrier could prevent the transmission from operating as intended. This problem does not pose an immediate safety hazard to vehicle occupants.
The fix: dealers will replace the entire eight-speed automatic transmission with a new one. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.
Affected components: reaction carrier, eight-speed automatic transmission.
Affected vehicles:
- 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 (with GM eight-speed automatic transmission)
- 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 (with GM eight-speed automatic transmission)
Next steps: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealership. Owners can also use the contact information below to reach out to Chevy or GMC customer service with any questions or concerns they may have.
Vehicles involved in this Customer Satisfaction Program were placed under a stop-sale order on February 8th, 2021. These vehicles will be released from stop sale/stop delivery status once the repairs contained in the bulletin have been performed. This Customer Satisfaction Program will remain in effect until March 31st, 2023, after which point the repairs in the bulletin will not be made to affected vehicles.

Why GM ain’t stuffing the 10speed in these trucks ? Da hell with the 8spd
Because they’d have to recertify every single one of them – at great expense – to satisfy Our Betters In Washington, and Our Betters in Sacaramento, regarding pollution and fuel economy ratings.
Thtat’s why.
The 8 speeds are an absolute dud. Abandon them and move on to either 6 or 10 speeds.
Shame on GM for not fast tracking the roll-out of the 10 speed. Ford did it with this co-engineered slush box and GM did a better job with the programming of it.
Yeah but isn’t Ford now having issues with their 10-speed?? Class action lawsuits, recalls and all?
I think there issues are with the programming and gm and ford write there own programs.
GM needs to pay more attention to gas vehicles and Not devote all their time to EV’s
The problem isn’t just with the 8 speed transmission. I have a 6 speed tranny in my 2018 Silverado 1500. When the transmission gets hot and the vehicle reaches 2,000 rpm it shudders as if I’m driving over rumble strips. The dealer won’t repair it because there is no error code stored.
My Father worked GM over 35 years , did his job as prescribed why CAN’T the engineering keep up with the skills of it’s employees.?!
Bought a brand new 2014 GM Sierra nothing but garbage from the day we bought it and general motors wouldn’t stand behind it to fix it it will be the last GM product I’ve ever own GMC stands for general motors mass of crap
My nephew has a 2019 an transmission goes out with 38000 miles on it under warranty an Chevy want make it good
sue,it has a 60k warranty
someone’s fibbing
GM is still trying to figure out how to build a transmission, apparently.
Bought a 2018 Silverado Z71 with similar transmission issues. This issue has been going on since the early part of 2016 with its model. I’m just going to say at the end of day GM continues to ignore this issue and pretends it doesn’t exist. There are currently thousands of law suits and pending ones.
GM is definitely not the same company it was years ago and Ford is even worse.
China majority owner.
RPO (M30) was a horrible transmission 4l60e as far as the 2wd transmission
I have a new 2020 silverado ,8 speed. Shifts hard and sometimes slips when shifting into next gear . No fix , told that’s normal ???
you have gm normal and conservative normal and liberal normal and on and on it goes.
My 2021 is doing that too. Deale said it’s normal. What do we do now??
I have owned 7 new Chevy trucks in last 30 years. Everyone of them had transmission problems before 50000 miles. Among other problems. I finally changed to Fords three trucks ago and have had zero problems with any of them. Current one is a 2018 with 146000 miles. I drive a lot of miles in my business.
the 6 and 10 speed were both co-engineered with ford the 8 may have been also but someone may have pulled the “better idea” light bulb fixture chain and decided against using it.
I have a 2020 Silverado 4×4 with 5700 miles
My transmission slipped between 1st and second they say it’s normal
sell now while used values are artificially high.
I have heard of people going into the computer and disabling 2nd gear
I have a 2021 GMC Sierra SLT 28000 miles transmission slipping between 2-5. It depends on how competent the Tech/Mechanic is at dealer. Tech documented what was needed to have GMC replace the entire transmission assembly.
So do they provide a similar vehicle to use while they replace the transmission…. it takes more than an hour to replace. Customers should not be inconvenienced for GM mistakes
if they need more than one day you get a loaner or rental, any tech that can not r&r a trans.in 8hrs. is a tard.
Gm truck owners are right.
What about the 2017 Cadillac Suv’s with with the 8spd transmission with the same problem.
All GM does is sweep the problem under the carpet.
And he’ll with the owners
Is this VIN specific or is it a case-by-case scenario?
Also on gmc acadia
Any issues with the 10 speed? Seems like the one to get with the newer 1500.
Thanks
I bought a 2021 LT Suburban in Jan with a 10 speed automatic transmission and at 14,000 miles noticed a whine. It’s been in the shop about 6-8 weeks – they reworked original transmission and 2 NEW transmissions later and it’s still in the shop. Now waiting on a GM technician to come look it over.
I have the 6 speed on my 2012 Silverado and it’s a rock solid trans. The 10 speed on my 1SS Camaro with the LT1 engine making 455 HP is flawless. Drive it easy, drive it hard, and it shifts silky smooth. You have to look at the tach to know if it is really shifting especially between 3-9 gear. Your going a bit to fast on a local road before you get to the tenth gear. Merging onto the interstate, awesome. If you don’t like it you can use the paddle shift. You barely know when it down shifts.
Have a 2019 GMC AT4 very nice truck. The 8 speed transmission is terrible. The service department’s have been trained by GM to tell the customers its normal operation. I asked GM for help they declined. I love the truck but my customer satisfaction is very low. I see they are replacing the 8 speed transmission in 2021 vehicles with a new transmission. They need to do the same for my 2019.
I have a 2019 silverado with the 8 speed transmission it is absolutely the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned I have owned it less then a year and a half and it has been in the shop about 7 times .
sell now while used values are artificially high.
I have a 2019 Silverado next gen that had all the same tranny issues posted here, dealer I bought from also said it was normal and I had to break it in.. I finally took it to my local Chevy dealership and the issue finally happened while they test drove it and they said that they reprogrammed the Automatic transmission module (ATM) and so far it has fixed about 95% of the problems I had with the transmission…just an FYI
In my 19 Silverado 5.3/8 speed transmission the dealership change the transmission fluid and it has been smooth ever since.
…years ago drove Chevy Impalas, Caprices with 4 speed automatic which really is an overdrive. I used these vehicles as taxis. Most were former police vehicles. In the city, we use to use drive gear versus overdrive. There is NO reason to be in overdrive at 30 miles an hour ESPECIALLY going up a hill. You really are laboring that motor and transmission. I bought many police cruisers…and there was allways a sticker in most of them that said “Do not use overdrive under 50 killometers an hour…OR when in persuit under 80 kilometers an hour. There had to be a reason they put that sticker on there.
The only problem I have with GM is they do not show what gear your are in unless your in a manual mode. The paddle shifters does place the trans in manual mode and you’ll get a display as what gear you are in. For the most part it doesn’t get into tenth gear to about 55mph, at least I think. I have to go to manual mode to find out. That shows how nice it shifts. When driving hard it’s difficult to count the gears.
For the cop cars, not putting it in overdrive places less strain on the transmission. Hard braking is the problem. No overdrive mean the torque converter is slipping as design to disengage some of the forces from the drive wheels to the engine.
that was back in the day before electronic programming any trans that has a proper program will not be “gear hunting” unless it has crappy mechanical engineering.
I have a 2021 Silverado 8 speed which has been making a hard shift into 1st gear at stop lights. I called the above customer service number and got a heavily acented women from outer space. She took my vin number and said I was not affected. After owning GM vehicles since 1964 , I have never had a good experience with their customer service. I will have to go to my dealer and pray that they can help me!
This is the 1st transmission issue I have had in over 50 years. GM started making automatic transmissions in 1939, there is no excuse for this. My 1962 Impala SS with Power glide still shifts like new.
sell now while used values are artificially high
Does anyone know what the symptoms are or where you can view the actual service bulletin?
you will know it when you experience it. push the blue on-star button
stop trolling please. If you have anything constructive to say then say it but stop trolling.
I have a 2016 and a 2018 Silverado with 8 speed transmissions. Both were making growling noises and vibrating after only 40,000 kms. Dealer changed the transmission oil in both and now they are fine. Never had to do that with my other 8 older Chevy trucks.
you are good to go now until they are ready for the crusher and that trans.will be waiting for a guy that has been looking for a good one for a long time.
I’ve got 40 miles on my 2019 Silvy with the 8 speed tranny, never had one problem! You whiners are all trolls!
A whole 40 miles give it another 40 miles and circle back.
Lol go home, with your 40 miles
Need to fix the 5.3L Engine first!! You can’t go anywhere without an engine that runs. I’ve had 3 lifters “Collapse” on my 2021 Silverado with only 7k miles. The first time at 3200k. And I promise you they could care less about customer satisfaction. To bad it’s not still at the dealership, I would call them and have them just go ahead and do the Trans also. Knock that out of the way too!!!
Breaking news GM has called a lid on all further complaints about 8 speeds, complaints will need to be by e-mail only and they will circle back with you when the # of cuomo harassment complaints equal 8sp complaints.
Why doesn’t GM just use the ten speed in all the full size trucks? To keep using 6 and 8 speed transmissions is asinine.
I work for a GMC Chevy dealer and, after reading said “Recall”, apparently only 64 or so vehicles (by VIN) are involved. Enjoy.
2017 sierra with 8 spd transmission. Nothing but crap from day one, dealership closes it’s eyes to any problems, paid 3k for extended warranty. Stuck with an expensive POS. Just about had it with GMs BS. Pay so much money for a truck and get shafted.
How about the 8-speed in my 2021 3.6 Chevy Colorado?
Sold my 2017 High Country with the 8 speed do to hard shifts and no repairs offered, truck only had 27k miles. Went to a 2021 LT trail boss with the 10 speed and could not be happier.
I would do that myself if I hadn’t just bought mine 3 months ago. I’m not upside down or anything but i just can’t make myself buy another gm product right now. I miss my old ‘79 Silverado.
No problems with the outstanding ZF 8 speed in Rams.
I had a 2018 ZR2. I liked the little pickup, they could never get the transmission to shift right. When its cold, put it in reverse and it just sits there for 5-8 seconds before it moves. I traded it. Have 2016 GMC 1500, they went through and dumped all the original fluid and all suggested updates. Still not great, but better. My 2020 ten speed in my Duramax is flawless, 35K pounds combined while towing and it just as smooth as when empty. The programming on the tranny is exceptional. Why the 8 speed is such a mess is beyond me. More over, why they keep putting into vehicles is even harder to understand. That tranny causes GM more issues than anything else, by far. They apparently want to continue to fight over it, rather than turn the damn page and move on with the 10 speed.
Breaking news they are sticking you with a garbage trans because all there attention is on energizer bunny powered vehicles.
A long time friend of mine that has run a transmission shop since the 1970’s told me to stay away from any GM with the RWD based 8 speed automatic and that it was a poorly designed unit from tear down analysis sheets that he receives from training material. He has never steered me wrong before so I’m going to heed the advice and strongly advise from it’s purchase. He also told me the old 6 speed and newer 10 speed have a far lower incidence of repairs and warranty claims but that should be obvious by this point.
Too little, too late. I drove GM trucks for 25 years. My last was a 2017 LTZ with the 8L90. Shudder on the highway was unbearable. Despite having spent an additional $3000.00 for extended service plans and being within the drivetrain warranty period, they flushed my transmission as a fix and would do nothing else. I traded that truck off three months ago and will never, ever purchase another GM product.
Have the Mobil 1 blue label put in. Fixes any shuddering issues. If you drive it too long with the shudder you will damage the torque converter necessitating a replacement.
I’m not trolling!!!! Love my 2021 Silverado LTZ but don’t like the tranny
Dealer replaced the valve body on my 21 Silverado 8 speed a year ago. Has been great since
I have been arguing with gm because now they are saying Vin specifically and are going to decline if it’s not your Vin regardless if it’s still the 8 speed mine is shifting problems had a late 2018 with same transmission it blew apart 10,000 miles after manufacturing warranty 5800 out of pocket told them this will be last Chevrolet I buy guess this will repair will be out of pocket 70,000 miles
