The GM Design team has published a new Chevy Silverado sketch that may provide an indication as to the styling direction the automaker will take with the upcoming mid-cycle refresh for the full-size pickup.
This design sketch looks very similar to the current Chevy Silverado Trail Boss thanks to its contrasting black grille and red-painted tow hooks. The grille design is different than that of the current Chevy Silverado Trail Boss, however, with a thick bar positioned in the upper section of the grille. This thick grille bar also carries Chevy’s iconic Bowtie emblem, moving it up from the center position where it’s located on the current model.
The headlights and daytime running lights on this model are also quite a bit different. The slanted three-segment LED headlights have a meaner and more aggressive look to them and are joined by triangular-shaped LED light signatures underneath. A third set of daytime running lights/fog lamps sit on either side of the red tow hooks, expanding on the truck’s go-anywhere appearance.
The design is more familiar as our eyes move down the side of the vehicle, although the truck in this sketch has a never-before-seen wheel design shod in knobby off-road tires and gloss black mirrors and exterior trim.
As we reported previously, the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado will introduce revised exterior styling and a new cabin layout with a larger infotainment screen and additional soft-touch materials. The 2022 Silverado will also offer Super Cruise, GM’s semi-autonomous driving assistant, which will likely arrive as an available option on the High Country trim level only. Customers can also expect a revised rear suspension setup and the deletion of the base-level 4.3L V6 LV3 engine.
We’ll have all the details on the mid-cycle refresh for the Chevy Silverado once they become available. For now, we encourage readers to let us know what they think of this preliminary design sketch in the comments below.

Very nice!
Very Impressive. More futuristic looking than any truck on the road today
I’ll stick with my 2019 Silverado LTZ Texas Edition! I loved the 2019 Silverado I first saw at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show! This rendering definitely doesn’t impress me one bit, sorry!
GM needs a way to differentiate Silverado from Sierra other than “Sloan’s Ladder”- outdated marketing for a nation without, with a few exceptions, middle “premium brands,” unlike Europe and Asia. In fact I’m convinced GMC as Forman’s truck actually hurts GM when Ram and Ford uses one truck with more trims to cover all buyers.
Styling, not features must define these trucks with each offering premium features much in the mode of Ram. Chevrolet/GMC & Buick/Cadillac should compete like Hyundai Kia going forewars.
That looks Bad A**
Looks good. But it reminds me of the new Blazer front end. And what’s up with the bunker styling cab?? Please GM get away from this styling. Also needs power up grades for your 5.3 and 6.2.
It’s enough design distinction to make Silverado unique from GMC and is in line with the youthful Chevrolet global design language which is important because GM using styling more than content to distinguish between brands.
Nice aggressive styling that should help Bowtie compete with Ram for #2
Nice. People will want to move out of the way when they see that coming.
For some reason, this reminds me of the original Avalanche
Looks burly! Hope it comes with a S/C 5.3 and an exhaust note to match!!
It’s the new 2023 Colorado.🤞
😮 Yes PLEASE!!! 🤞🤞🤞
WOW!
That’s a damn good looking truck !!!
I know the spy pictures tell a different story but in the rendering I’d say the upper lights are DRLs while the lower triangular shaped light would be where the actual low beam and high beam are similar to Blazer and Trailblazer
Sketch rendering is cool but it doesn’t match the actual camo refresh pics
I agree. This looks more like the initial design concept for the 2019 MY. If you remember the GM Defense 2500 Silverado HD concept, it had a similar bulky grille to this design.
Once you tone down the concept look of it, it matches perfectly.
99% sure this is the basis of the 2022 Silverado or Zr2.
I agree.
Suck the protrusion on the front bumper in and slope the hood more for better visibility and you’ve got a winner. Might actually trade in my 18 for one.
How about a regular cab,6 1/2′ bed? If they can be built for the middle east how about the USA?
A regular cab long bed in the LT version, not an ugly work truck!
Nice design!!!! I’m disappointed to hear that GM will delete the base 4.3V6!!!! It’s a great powerful engine that I would like to see go back into Colorado/Canyon. Speaking of Colorado/Canyon when will they be redesigned? I love the currents trucks but it’s time to redesign to pass the competition.
Wow, that’s beautiful! Too bad this will never see production. GM would never be this aggressive. They’re more of a follower than a leader, lately.
BREAD and BUTTER, along with the Arlington, Texas SUV plant, this is the Bread, Butter, and Bacon, of GM, well we can throw the Corvette in there too. But this is what makes the cash register ring!!
This is the problem with GM, the concept sketches look way better and with better angles and proportions then the actual products. I think the ceos look at it and say “this is too futuristic looking” then the Ford Raptor comes out and sells like toiletpaper during a pandemic.
Love it but like Paul mentioned this image isn’t reality. GM has some great designers but the bean counters always kill the party. GM needs to give their designers a bigger budget and more control over final production models. The classic bowtie front end looks so much better than Chevrolet spelled out, hopefully the production model retains the classic bowtie.
Aggressive , masculine and beautiful at the same time. Would sell like hog dogs at the fair.
Maybe this will be an EV version in the future since that seems to be the focus and direction of GM.
General Motors plans to completely phase out vehicles using internal combustion engines by 2035, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra announced Thursday. The automaker will go completely carbon neutral at all facilities worldwide by 2035.
Barra has frequently touted GM’s plan for “an all-electric future,” recently increasing to 30 the number of pure battery-electric vehicles it will launch by the middle of this decade, but this marks the first time the largest Detroit automaker has set a hard target for completely phasing out gas and diesel engines for all light-duty vehicles, including pickups and SUVs.
GM already showed most of their EV pickup. It looks nothing like that. Carscoops has a good rendering based on what we have seen.
an ev future was never in doubt how fast and to what extent goes by how the political winds blow.
Game Over
Doing away with that angled front quarter panel that came down almost to a “sharp point” is a good move. I’m still not sure about longevity of the new motors that can run on as little as 1 cylinder.
Instead of 4 cyls. of the troublesome lifters there are probably 8 cyls. w/ the the same lifters. shut that crap off after the powertrain warranty ends and you have to pull the heads to fix the problem. a catch can and regular oil changes recommended
They should just do away with the headlights altogether, as right now, they can’t get any worse!
I agree .I don’t like penlight sized headlights!!!
Look I’ve been a Chevy fan all my life. The new look of these trucks may appeal to some but, its starting to look more like a spaceship than a truck. In my opinion change your look make the public go woah, beef up the whole truck itself. Do a solid front axle again bring back a square body design with a new age twist give your customers a throwback feel with power to wow them. This new look that Chevrolet has decided to go with is nice but it’s starting to look more like a Ford for lights mixed with a Honda Ridgeline rooftop and the. New lights don’t seem like they will be dependable. Your Classic model Silverado trucks still turn heads. I say bring the old school back and make it better. Toughen up your rockers cab corners wheel wells cross members in the bed and your body so rust doesn’t eat it away so fast. Provide a bit taller beefier stance. I think you will hit a good chunk of those people who again, are looking for a truck that can handle anything on and off road. A Truck that can handle the extreme elements and keep on coming at you with no signs of stopping. You bring back a classic look with the power and strength that will put you back in the seat, with those things you’ll have people buy. Like a rock, Strong, Reliable, Affordable. Chevrolet.
They want trucks that turn to dust. Then they sell more trucks
If that rendering comes close I would say it is a winner. Keep the 6 banger for the people that want it,to me turbo means trouble.
Let’s just see what we get as the headlamps look smaller than what is peeking though the cammo.
IS this a drawing of a second grill that may be used? Is this the ZR model?
It looks good but I want to see more before I make a call on this.
Maybe this is what the refresh of the HD trucks will look like?
If look past the concept proportions that is pretty much the Silverado HD design applied to the 1500.
With GM, if a sketch gets enough negative reviews, they will build it. GM needs to fire every design team they have except for the Corvette.
Dan, I think that’s sadly how they roll …
Looks wicked, hope they do it. Hope to see a chrome grille with this too!😎
Great design. Hope interior gets a modern refresh!
I sure hope that is close to what it looks like. I love it.
We can only hope the production version doesn’t get watered down. The 2021 F-150 isn’t anything special, the 22 Silverado refresh sales will go thru the roof, if it’s anything like the sketch! The reopened Oshawa plant will be working OT, GMC Sierra needs to be on steroids, a more aggressive version of GM’s trucks. Playing it safe with conservative styling won’t cut it anymore, Hummer is proof of that!
Attractive design — a buyer if it’s real.
GM Design team obviously knows how to make a truck look good. Always disappointed how style designs get compromised in translation. Message to GM Adm: build this truck as designed. The proportions are beautiful, the aggressive look is perfect. Resist destroying the design using the tired excuse it had to be made “real-world friendly”. Buyers are tired of ugly trucks and want a sports truck that can occasionally do truck duties or pull a trailer.
Looks to good GM doesn’t have the balls or brains left to build this truck.
I would actually buy this one……..
This is literally the Silverado HD front end applied to the 1500 with a different headlight housing.
I think the design is finally going in the right direction. The tiny strip that is the headlights i think is definitely the wrong direction and severely limits the potential light output of aftermarket headlights that will help push consumers towards other brands. The more rugged look with a leveled appearance and larger tires is very appealing and is what most truck owners either want or attain through upgrades. The base truck needs tow mirrors, and maybe a slightly taller cabin (based on what i see in the drawing). One of the big problems Chevy has had the last several years is that they keep moving more towards a car design, with smaller headlights, less curves, and car-like side mirrors. People buy the Silverado because they want a truck, if they wanted a truck-car hybrid, they would buy the Colorado. The thin lights and regular mirror should be on the Colorado and not the Silverado. I have a 2017 Silverado and have had to do some upgrades to remove those car-like appearances and restore its truck demeanor.
The strip at the top is not the headlights. The headlights are in the lower section, similar to the Silverado HD and several other Chevy CUVs.
Perfect. Now that looks good! Sinister looking.
Looks like Colorado ZH2. It its nice.
Agree on the 6 Banger! And I like this truck! “Gills” are hidden better, fenders flow into the bumper. Looks complete.
Chevy, posts picture*
Me, “these mfs spittin”
i love the sketch , now if they would build the truck to look like this !! WOW
GM is at it again. Let’s try to make this look like a blazer which is trying to look like a Camaro. Which in the end has terrible bunker windows, low head room, not a convenient vehicle to daily drive and continues to be out sold by other competitors vehicles to the point of getting the axe. The competition doesn’t have these basic compromises and they sell well. Will GM ever listen to their lifelong faithful customers?
Right.. they’ll never be leaders. Only followers. GM plans on going full EV in 15 years. At least put everything on the board. Give the customers what they want not what they think they want. We don’t want Camaro / Blazer / Silverado HD front end styling. No bunker style cabs. Updated and more powerful engines ..
I rather chrome grill than black also bigger head lights.
I also like the 4.3 engine as it is more economical.
about time i would buy one
Sold…Sold…Sold
I think the look is good. I drive a 2018 Toyota Tacoma. I’m putting my order in for a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado lt trailboss reg cab shortbox. If GM can sell them in Dubai, why not in the USA? Gun metal metallic color. Thanks
I love the new style I hope they do the same with the 2500 HD I will definitely buy one in 2022 if it looks like this.
The Silverado HD already has this styling with the turn signals up top and the headlights in a lower section.
Based on the spy photos we’ve seen recently I’d say no this doesn’t preview the midcycle refresh, which is too bad because this would make the Silverado by far the best looking truck on the market. To me this looks like how the designers intended for the HD to look.
Maybe this is a concept sketch for the next-gen Colorado? It is due for a redesign, especially with new competition from Nissan.
Looks great! I’m due for an upgrade in ’22.
Could the headlights be any slimmer? Makes me question there effectiveness. Otherwise it looks okay
The headlights are a sign of where Chevy is going with this truck, hinting that the approach in terms of styling would appear to fall in line with Chevy’s upcoming All-Electric Silverado Design Theme that was recently shown on this website.
Way Better !!! Current front end looks bad and if I wanted rounded wheel wells I would have bought a ford.
Does it come with the image-reversed BFG tires too???
Beautiful. Reminds me of the aggressive look of the Chevy Blazer fascia. Definitely has sex appeal!
Really nice. Blows Ford and Ram away., I will be the first to have one if it looks like that. And i will also re-paint it a true Candy Apple Red Since the Auto company’s cheap out on an orange peel one coat mess.
I know that pissed me off dropped 65k to end up 2 weeks later dropping another 15k on repainting it
That’s a sweet looking rig, now if they’d only ditch those ugly door panel mounted mirrors like on the current models. Or I’ll still be sticking with my 2018 High Country.
myself also, the mirrors were moved for aerodynamics, probably adds .05 mpg and an 18 seems to be reliable, the bugs may have been worked out.the only issue I have is I get the message service trailer brake system occasionally which you cannot do anything about till it stays on my 14 did the same thing except it said service stabilatrack
Great looking truck tooted the real thing will never look like that. Keep the 4.3 six dump the 4 and pair all engine with the ten speed.
Great looking truck in deed, my question is why we haven’t seen the LB3 sprout two more cylinders into a 4L I-6? With the math =ing 465HP and 522lb-ft. you would have a pretty phat light duty truck!
That is one bad ass looking truck other then the headlight being a little too small!
Looks good. Highly doubt it will look like that. I’ll be more impressed if the interior gets upgraded.
I am in agreement with the previous comment on the mirror location. The mirror looks much better on the 2018 ,which is higher up to where the pivot window is located on the older model Chevy.
Recently I went to Hendricks and I did not see any 4×4 in the LTZ trim only Z71.
Any Silverado I am buying has to be 4×4.
Okay!…this approach looks really good and it also falls in line with the Teaser Photo of Chevy’s upcoming Electric Silverado that was shown earlier this year , if this is accurate, I can’t wait to see one on the street.
It looks fantastic, cannot wait. Please don’t get clever and screw this up. I can’t stand the goofy looking front end of current Silverado, and the equally goofy swooping body line on the side. Its a truck, angular look is best.
I not a fan of BLACK grills. Give me Chrome.!!!!!
Very similar to the Ford truck still with a worked over Camaro facial. With curves like the Tundra 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾
As an owner of a 2019 Silverado I can only pray that they get the engine and transmission issues resolved with this new redesign. Their quality is lacking, but vehicle styling is getting better.
Chrysler and Volkswagen made serious money on their retro offerings of the Mini Cooper and VW Bug respectively…GMC’s truck body lines from 92-96 were an absolute American favorite (and are still on the road, btw) – how about GM retro that series – those trucks/burbs were solid, serious, and simple. The new designs are pretentious and the grills are just way too big! Just a thought…
Stop emailing me every time someone posts a comment!
Not impressed with the look of the front end. I’ve been a Chevy truck owner my whole life, and it seems the truck looks less and less like a truck as time marches on…very disappointing. Further, it appears as though the windshield profile is getting smaller as well…
Futuristic, sleek look but will it be as roomy as the current Trail Boss is my question? The cab looks small. Also what will the back of it look like. Show all the sketches and go from there.
Will the gas mileage be improved with this new model? That is always an important factor especially moving forward in today’s economy. I am a “Heavy-Chevy bow tie lady.” I love the Boss look and smooth ride when traveling don’t get me wrong, but, what else will it offer besides a sexy look to drive me to wanting it for longterm besides being sexy. Another question is what will the projected price tag reflect?
I like how all the owners of 2019 and up Silverado’s say “it’s ugly”…
No…it looks better than your truck, and you are bitter.
Well, I own a 2019, and since I can get what I paid for it in trade, I am movin’ on up like George and Weezy into a 2022 when they are available.
Although, the 2019 is going to have to go sooner than that…this summer specifically.
Anyone want a 2019 RST Crew Cab Std Bed Z71?
50k…hahahahahaha
The trucks are looking good, I think the head lights could be bigger. I like to see more shocking colors too.
Cool AF. Nice work GM!
This is what happens when you have people designing trucks that don’t actually drive and use trucks. Bring back the more traditional styling of the K2XX platform. You couldn’t pay me enough to drive the new 2019+ Chevrolet trucks. Bought a Ram 1500 Classic instead.
