This week, General Motors revealed the new Chevrolet Tornado Van – a new model with which the automaker enters the commercial small van segment in Mexico. After analyzing the expansion opportunities in the local market, the company decided to introduce the commercial vehicle of Asian origin that’s already on sale under the Chevrolet brand in some South American countries.
The 2022 Chevrolet Tornado Van for Mexico is nothing more than a Wuling Hong Guang V, the same vehicle made in China that GM markets as the Chevrolet N400 in several Latin American countries such as Chile, Peru, Panama, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and El Salvador. However, the company preferred to use the Tornado nameplate with which it has sold the Chevrolet Montana small pickup in the Mexican market.
“The Tornado Van is the first vehicle that Chevrolet competes with in the segment and will undoubtedly be a great alternative for entrepreneurs and established businesses, not only because of its versatility, practicality and functionality, but because of its competitive price,” said Chevrolet Marketing Manager for GM in Mexico, Adriana Schutte, in a press release. “This is the ideal vehicle for small and medium-sized businesses,” she added.
As the Bow Tie brand’s first small van in Mexico, GM claims the 2022 Chevrolet Tornado Van will suit the needs of any business thanks to its large interior space and cargo capacity. By being offered only in the cargo variant, the 2022 Tornado Van is focused on small and medium-sized companies in the Latin country, filling the commercial gap left by the recently discontinued Tornado pickup.
Unlike the more modest 1.2L engine that powers the Chevrolet N400 in other Latin American markets, the 2022 Chevrolet Tornado Van for Mexico is equipped with a relatively more robust powertrain, comprised of a naturally aspirated 1.5L engine and a five-speed manual transmission. Although the company has not yet revealed output, it should be higher than the 81 horsepower that the aforementioned 1.2L engine produces.
The 2022 Chevrolet Tornado Van will be officially launched in Mexico during the second half of this year, when it will be available for sale throughout the brand’s official dealer network in that country. Specific details on its configuration, trim level and pricing will be released at a later date.

Bring it to USA with automatic transmission and a bigger naturally aspirated engine.
Bring it to the USA, but change everything about it? Won’t happen. Especially when you consider crash tests and emissions standards, which probably wasn’t a consideration when this was designed.
I believe there is a market in the US for something like this. Ram(Dodge) and Ford both gave smaller offerings- However, GM would have to promote it by advertising. Again Mary Barra would not let this vehicle come to the US as. She is determined to completely ruin GM
I don’t disagree with your sentiment, but I also don’t see this vehicle as the kind of thing that is going to save GM.
I like it, bring it Chevy. Offer the cargo an wagon model. The market here in the US is hungry for some common sense vehicles, we don’t need anymore SUVs or Crossovers. I’d like a cargo version say in a 1LT Trim with a solid plastic bulk head with window to see out the back windows, and sat/radio, an nav system … nothing elaborate.
“The market here in the US is hungry for some common sense vehicles”
I see zero evidence of that. Take a look around at what your neighbors are buying.
Probably some liberal named it in the hope it would end up in Red states that don’t have earthquakes and illegals.
Lucky Mexicans, and we’re stuck with the crappy truck interiors.
Looks so tiny it looks like you could pick it up with one hand.
Why does GM need saving? They seem to be doing quite well. Do you have any insite Regarding the hundreds of projects that are currently underway, the full size EV van, the mid size EV van? Are you an executive at GM ?
