Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Silverado sales during the fourth quarter of 2020 put the truck in second place in its competitive set. The Ford F-Series (see Ford F-series sales) took first, outselling the Silverado by 18,944 units while the Silverado placed second, outselling the Ram Pickup by 18,178 units.

Previously, the Silverado overtook the Ram in Q1 2020 to reclaim its typical spot as the second best-selling model in its segment, which was also the case during Q2 2020 but not the case in Q3 2020. The increase in Silverado sales this quarter enabled the pickup to move back into second place, knocking Ram down to third.

The Ford F-Series and Ram Pickup were the only models to post a decrease in sales this quarter at 15.2 and 6.6 percent, respectively. All other models in the segment reported growth in year-over-year sales volumes during the fourth quarter, with the Toyota Tundra reporting the largest gain of nearly 27 percent.

The GM Authority Take

The 10 percent growth rate in Chevy Silverado sales during Q4 2020 is impressive, but the 3 percent growth in segment share is even more so. Both feats are monumental when considered in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its disruptive impact on both the economy and on the auto industry at large.

Notably, sales grew across all three Silverado lines, Silverado 1500 (Light Duty), Silverado HD (Heavy Duty) and Silverado MD (Medium Duty).

The Silverado’s gains came just while Ford was launching the new F-150. GM’s cross-town rival experienced several issues during the launch, including the natural dip in sales volume as a result of lower inventory. In fact, inventory of the new 2021 F-150 was impacted more than usual by what appear to be quality-related holds on already-built pickups.

That circumstance, along with strong demand for the Silverado, allowed the Chevy truck to regain the second best-selling position in its segment, narrow the gap with the F-Series and put greater distance with the Ram.

  1. This is only because of EDE in December. GM blew all its inventory into the streets in the final month of 2020 and has been paying the price in 2021. It has been an absolute bloodbath in market share loss YTD and I am not sure GM will be able to recover unless it can find a bunch of computer chips in a mattress somewhere.

    1. Right Ken. I have a 16 SS Sedan, 19 Silverado High Country, and a 21 Blazer RS…. The only import I’ve got is a 71 240z.

Just wait until GM reveals their quarterly sales report for Q1

  3. Actually GM did this with limited inventories and gaining a higher ATP than they ever have had in GM history.

The new truck should only improve things

    1. I sure love my 2021 HD it has tough truck features looks great and still has a comfortable ride with plenty of power

      1. Granted GM has the best HD ride but you must live somewhere like AZ. where 95% of the roads are like a sheet of glass to call it comfortable.

        1. No I don’t , I live in the middle of farm country and travel a lot on unpaved and gravel roads . Not sure if the Z-71 option helps but it sure didn’t hurt either

          1. Z71 on a hd will not make you feel a difference like you can in a 1500,you must have been a owner of HDs for a long time that is why you say comfortable, the only time I refer to a HD as comfortable is on a smooth road.

    3. Is it the design? Or, is it the utility and usefulness? Could it also be Chevy dealers are dealing and Ford dealers are acting like they are doing you a favor to even acknowledge your presence when you walk in the door, like it is here in my city in NE Tennessee?

  6. Considering how many of these I see running around lately I would tend to believe this.

  7. GM is probably going to take Ford to lunch on trucks, look at how they pricing the 2.7s (a decent equipped 4×4 2.7 can be had for less than $30k) plus CAFE requirements, not being a fanboy but Ford and Ram need to look out.

    1. There is nothing popular about a regular cab short box. They sell trucks to make money. If the numbers warranted a shortbox regular cab, they certainly would build them, but they don’t because few people want them.
