General Motors and Isuzu Motors have issued a recall for certain examples of the Chevy Low Cab Forward heavy-duty trucks due to an issue related to the rear axle U-bolt nuts.
The problem: in affected vehicles, the U-bolt nuts for the rear axle may not have been properly tightened at the manufacturing plant. If the U-bolt nuts loosen and fall off, the axle can misalign with the centering pin, allowing the rear axle to move rearward and the propeller shaft to separate at the slip joint.
The hazards: if the propeller shaft separates from the slip joint, the rear wheels will not receive power from the engine and the vehicle will stall. This can increase the risk of a crash if the vehicle is in motion.
Vehicles affected by this problem that are in dealer inventory must be held and not delivered to customers, dealer traded or used for demonstration purposes until the necessary repairs have been made.
The fix: dealers are instructed to inspect and, if necessary replace and tighten the rear axle U-bolt nuts. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.
Affected components: rear axle U-bolt nuts.
