The GMC Terrain was originally set to be refreshed for the 2021 model year, however, due to complications caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, the updated model was pushed back to the 2022 model year (see more 2022 GMC Terrain info). As such, 2021 GMC Terrain, which represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Terrain, sees very few changes from the 2020 model year. Here’s exactly what they are.
2021 GMC Terrain Model Line
For the 2021 model year, the Denali models had late availability, only starting production in February 2021. Otherwise, the Terrain model line remains the same, and includes:
- FWD SL (TXL26)
- FWD SLE (TXL26)
- AWD SLE (TXB26)
- FWD SLT (TXM26)
- AWD SLT (TXC26)
- FWD Denali (TXN26)
- AWD Denali (TXD26)
Note: for the non-gear heads out there, FWD stands for front-wheel-drive and AWD stands for all-wheel-drive.
Exterior
On the outside, the 2021 Terrain loses one exterior color: Smokey Quartz Metallic.
In total, the 2021 GMC Terrain offers eight exterior colors:
- White Frost Tricoat
- Blue Emerald Metallic
- Graphite Gray Metallic
- Satin Steel Metallic
- Quicksilver Metallic
- Summit White
- Ebony Twilight Metallic
- Red Quartz Tintcoat
Powertrain
The 2021 GMC Terrain deleted the turbocharged 2.0L LTG I4 engine which also results in the loss of the following equipment:
- 9-Speed Automatic Transmission (M3H)
- Trailering equipment (V92)
- Factory-installed trailer hitch (VR2)
- 17-inch front and 16-inch rear 4-wheel antilock disc brakes (J17)
- 3.17 axle ratio (FXP)
- Dual-outlet stainless-steel exhaust (NWO)
- 17-inch steel spare wheel (4GO)
- 17-inch compact spare tire (QCL)
As such, the 2021 GMC Terrain offers just one engine – the turbocharged 1.5L LYX I4 making 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque.
Packages
From a package standpoint, the 2021 GMC Terrain renames the Driver Alert Package I (B26) to GMC Safety Plus (PED), which no longer requires the Convenience Package. The GMC Safety Plus package contains the following features:

2021 GMC Terrain Availability
The 2021 GMC Terrain followed the regular GM model year rollover sequence and entered production around the third quarter of the 2020 calendar year. The crossover continues to be assembled at the GM San Luis Potosi factory in Mexico.
As mentioned, the GMC Terrain sees a refresh for the 2022 model year that brings revised front and rear ends, a new AT4 trim level, and more. We expect the current, second-generation Terrain to live on thru the 2024 model year, and be replaced with an all-new model thereafter.
It will be by far the most popular of the four trim levels in the range. Several small changes are in store for GMC’s smallest utility vehicle.Terrain News
This Trim Level Will Make Up Half Of 2022 GMC Terrain Sales
2021 GMC Terrain: Here’s What’s New And Different
Hopefully gm will change their mind and add a 2.0l again in the near future. I know electric vehicles are getting all of the attention right now, but a serious internal combustion engine is still needed today for the vast majority of people.
It is also a shame they did not get rid of that silly push-button transmission control. Dangerous when you need to downshift on snow or ice without taking your eyes off the road.
Since gm is on a roll of deleting all kinds of equipment why don’t they just delete the Terrain period who gone want to buy a 2021 Terrain since you barely get any option choice like the engine that would be nice and the transmission does gm actually think there going to sell lots I guess dealers are going to have lots of vehicles in stock and I’m sure gm going to put lots of discounts and incentives to move this no option Terrain. Gm you just handed your future terrain buyers to your other segment manufacturers! .watch and see sales plummeted of the terrain and I bet for 2022 might decide to bring back 2.0 l option
Well, at least they got rid of those ugly square wheel wells!
I guess u mean from the 2010-2017 Terrain model
So brad tell me so the 2.0 l is no longer available for Terrain I’m specially was interested in the terrain Denali and when will we see on gmc website us/Canada web site
170 hp must be really fun to drive….
stop being cheap GM…
Wouldn’t touch one with that engine!
