Hummer EV Pickup Spotted Next To 2022 GMC Sierra Refresh

The upcoming 2022 GMC Sierra was just spotted on the back of a flatbed truck draped in camouflage, giving us an early look at the refreshed pickup. Interestingly, the upcoming Sierra was caught alongside the GMC Hummer EV pickup.
Earlier this week, we brought you coverage of a GMC Hummer EV pickup undergoing some testing on public roads alongside the 2021 Chevy Tahoe, providing an interesting real-world comparison between the two vehicles beyond the usual batch of press materials.
Now, we’re getting a look at the upcoming 2022 GMC Sierra pickup. Once again, seeing these two vehicles side-by-side provides a good size comparison, demonstrating things like vehicle proportions, ground clearance, wheel and tire sizing, door sizes, and the like.
Dropping in as the fourth model year of the latest fifth-generation vehicle (introduced for the 2019 model year), the upcoming 2022 model year is expected to bring a host of changes for the GMC Sierra pickup. These include new styling with a revised front and rear fascia, as well as new exterior color options.
Based on the wheel design, this particular 2022 GMC Sierra appears to be the Elevation trim level, which is equipped with 20-inch open-spoke rollers with a black finish.
Inside, the 2022 GMC Sierra is expected to feature an all-new cockpit, with an overhauled dash, center stack, larger central infotainment screen, and new center console. The new interior is also expected to feature a revised gauge cluster, a new gear selector, and new interior storage options, plus the introduction of a larger sunroof/moonroof option.
Technology will also be cutting-edge, including the introduction of the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system with autonomous towing.
Under the hood, the 2022 GMC Sierra will carryover the same engine and transmission options as the current model year. Under the skin, the new Sierra will continue to ride on the GM T1 platform.

Will there not be any power train upgrade? The 5.3 has remained unchanged since 2013, the 6.2 ditto. The power train is where GM has always a shinned, and Ford updated engines are going to take more market share otherwise.
Please GM add the variable valve lift from the 2.7, or bring back the L8B from 2018, or better yet, do both! It at least looks like we will get expanded options for the 10 speed.
They invested a lot in the transmission plants so I think everything will get the 10 speed with the refresh. It’s not enough though, they need power bumps.
The Gen 5 5.3 has changed quite a bit since its launch in K2 trucks, same with the 6.2. The only thing that hasn’t was the power numbers.
The 5.3 L83 turned in to two updated versions, the L82 with the 6 speed and L84 with the 8 speed or 10 speed. L82 is still the regular AFM version (4 cylinders deactivate) but has direct mounted control solenoids instead of a VLOM. Also they went to a 1 piece cast aluminum oil pan and a revised front drive system and new water pump.
The L84 version (as well as the L87 6.2) are DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) engines so all 8 cylinders are deactivation capable, with 17 different operating configurations. The L84 (and L87) also dropped the VLOM for direct mounted control solenoids, and also got the 1 piece oil pan and new front accessory drive and water pump.
They should have put the mirrors back where they use to be on the refresh.
I really like them on the door, has a retro / badass look. Only thing on the exterior I don’t like is the narrow headlights on the higher trim Silverados and I’d like wheel well trim as an option like in the Silverado HD, to help with paint chips. That and the Sierra asymmetrical wheel wells but that won’t change in a refresh.
The turn signal should go back into the mirror lens as well. On the LTZ and High Country.
No way, I like the mirrors mounted on the door, it’s unique and you have way better view of your sides and takes away blind spots. There is a significant purpose why they lowered it down on the door.
They should have leap frogged Ford and RAM and put the Escalade dash in refreshed trucks.
Because a 38″ screen would fare so well with contractors wearing gloves struggling to change the radio station right?? I’m also sure that wouldn’t add like $3000 to the price of the base model right?
A LOT of people seem to forget about fleets and base model buyers. Truck companies build a truck to suit the Denali crowd, and strip it down for the working man. I love creature comforts as much as the next guy, but I think Chevy (not really GMC) needs to start with the base model and build up, not start with the HC and de-content.
Obviously a work truck would not get that dash. Look at the Yukon. The Denali has a different dash from the rest if I remember correctly. Or maybe it’s the Chevy Tahoe/suburban high country. Either way, it could be done. And of course GM will focus on higher trims first. That’s where the profit is to be had.
When will I see GMC Sierra electric?
It’s parked right behind the 2022 Sierra. It’s called the Hummer EV.
@Henry
Lol, touche. Though in reality, Larry asks a good question. The answer is in the next 2 years. The program was bumped WAY up in the last 4 or 5 months, initially it was going to debut around 2024. I’d expect some time around mid to late 2022, if not a bit earlier.
Double stack rear leaf spring, so no changes to the rear suspension either, at least for this model. Also seen some other photos of the denali with a small sunroof so no chance of a larger sunroof either. Wow GM really fell behind the competition. I was thinking of getting a 2022 sierra at4. But now I’m leaning towards a f150 tremor. Such a shame.
Why can’t they leave the exterior alone? It looks great the way it is. It just needed an interior refresh.
I’m hoping they go with the Yukon headlights.
You’ll enjoy this update then 😉
I’d like to see some more hot colours. The red tint coat is great, but they need something like F150’s Anti Matter Blue.
I hope that they also address the fuel tank size. 24 gallons on a crew cab when RAM offers 33, Ford offers 36 and Toyota offers 38 is just another spot that they are falling behind. 30 gallons should be a minimum size offered, even as an upgrade, on these crew cab trucks.
GM has been going backwards instead of forwards on that. My 2017 is 26 gallons. My guess is that they go with a smaller gas tank to get a bit of extra payload. The weight of a full tank of fuel counts towards the vehicle’s weight. That said, 10 extra gallons is about 60 pounds.
Will the 2022 Sierra 3500 HD be refreshed as well or just the base 1500 for now? I am in the market for a 3500 dually and would love to have a refreshed interior since the 2021 already looks somewhat dated compared to Ram and F series.
Usually the HD’s are refreshed the following year. Sort of a bummer because I am also in the market for a new truck this year, and I dont want to buy something that I know is going to look dated within 12 months.
Some more power for the 5.3 would be nice and having the 10 speed across the board should be a requirement along with finding ways to bump mileage back up where it was before on the 4.3/5.3 AFM and 6.2 engines. The interior is the most crucial aspect they need to get right and a panoramic roof option would be nice.
The GMC Hummer EV pickup high rear quarters and short bed take on the look of the Avalanche.
In 2022 are there going to be updates to the 2500 HD as the 6.6 gas in 2021 is paired with a 6 speed tranny while the diesel and the 1500’s all have 10 speed tranny’s. If any one has seen the video comparison of the 6.6 gas and 6 speed tranny versus the 6.6 diesel with a 10 speed tranny it is obvious that the 6 speed needs to be replaced. Any info if this update is going to be applied to the 2022 2500 HD gas models.
