Here’s Who GM Is Targeting With The 2021 Buick Envision

The all-new second-generation 2021 Buick Envision is here, with the first units currently trickling into dealers. Now, GM Authority has learned the key demographics GM is targeting with the latest 2021 Envision premium crossover.
General Motors’ target for the latest 2021 Buick Envision is skewed slightly towards women, with 45 percent of buyers being male, and 55 percent being female. The target demographic age is between 35 and 55 years old, with a household income around $80,000. Seventy percent are married couples, possibly with children, or “empty nesters” with older children.
The demographic insight follows GM Authority’s exclusive reporting of the 2021 Buick Envision sales target, which is set at 50,000 units for the 2021 calendar year. That figure is the higher than all other previous model years for the crossover, which saw its best U.S. sales performance in 2017 with 41,040 units total.
As GM Authority reported previously, GM sees the latest second-gen Envision as appealing to customers “at the need and want levels,” suggesting a deeper, emotional connection to the vehicle, per an interview with Buick Marketing Manager Rob Peterson.
The first units of the 2021 Buick Envision began arriving at U.S. ports back in December, with inventory under one unit per dealer as of last month.
Outside, the 2021 Buick Envision features all-new styling, with new proportions that are wider and lower than the previous model. The styling takes its cues from the 2018 Buick Enspire concept vehicle, while the interior was redesigned as well. Standout tech features include a 10.2-inch touchscreen, as well as a suite of safety goodies, such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and Following Distance Indicator.
Under the skin is the GM E2 platform, while under the hood, the 2021 Buick Envision cradles the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine. Output is rated at 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Production takes place at the GM China (SAIC) facility in Shanghai.

Buick should be targeting buys with something special THINK 1976 ELECTRA PARK AVENUE EV SEDAN. This will get customers in the showroom and put something on the street to compete with Tesla sedan
Well then I guess I fit the target demographics and I am very interested in this vehicle. Slightly off-putting that it is expected to be driven a bit more by women, but whatever. Wife has an Enclave and I’ll be handing my Terrain down to my son in a few years. Also cross-shopping the Cadillac XT4.
The Envision is built in China. The XT4 is built in Kansas City Kansas. That’s why I’m going with the XT4 and I think that you should too.
Soon as I saw made in China, I decided to shop other companies.
The XT4 is a lot smaller. The XT5 is closer in size.
This is an attractive vehicle. It probably is a good mix of efficiency and performance, but the fact that it is made in china takes it off my list and if more people knew this fact, it would be off theirs too.
Why would Buick move production for the Envision to the US when they sold less than 35,000 units in the US and almost 168,000 in China for 2020. It’s not economically feasible and doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why GM won’t produce this car in the US.
Adam, Adam, ADAM just get it the hell out of China IF you want to sell it in the US. Do you get that Sir???? Build it in Mexico or ANYWHERE else!!! Are you AWARE of the Uighur situation where CCP Genocide MAY be taking place in Chinese Forced Labor “Re-education” Camps for MILLIONS of Chinese Muslim minorities??? Are you AWARE of the coming possible boycott of the upcoming CCP Chinese Olympics over this deadly serious issue??? Get “woke” about it!! Eerily similar to Hitler’s Concentration Camps while convincing the WORLD that everything was peachy keen during his 1936 Olympics “Show” before all hell broke loose. Enjoy your Chinese CCP Envision sir!!
In case you haven’t figured it out yet, China is our mortal enemy with plans to cancel, if not own America. Envision has a whole different meaning!!!
Do you not realize corporations have no moral compass. Why do you think they outsource production and labor to developing counties? Use your brain. It’s not that difficult to see the strategy behind this.
I swear to God the ignorance on these threads is stunning. Can’t even get simple consensus on CCP China being atrocious massive human rights violators!! The USA is in a hell of a mess with a dim future. But while the CCP re-educates & executes it’s own “resisters” y’all enjoy that new Envision because your moral equivalents to the set of tires on that made in China vehicle. Oh gee, the enlightened “Progressives” here are gathering “lists” & demanding “Re-education” camps. I get it. One world order under the CCP. Chilling.
I’m not negating that China has done horrible things including mass human rights violations. HOWEVER at the end of the day the corporation (GM) doesnt care about that. They care about how to save the most money while making the most bang for their buck. If you were a GM executive you would probably be kn board with importing the Envision considering the market for it.
Wish it was made in the USA it looks good and the 2.0 is a good engine for it.
Why did we bail out GM for them to import cars made in China and support a communist country?
My Impala is made in Detroit which brings the question, we saved the automakers how come it did not save Detroit?
Meanwhile, foreign car companies are continuing to build successful factories here.
Don’t get it this insanity and maybe my last GM product
I too would prefer to buy an American car made in the USA. But we’re living in a whole new world. General Motors is a global company. The Chinese buy more Buicks than Americans do. And GM has factories in many countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and Australia. For GM to survive, the have to build and sell cars globally. I will continue to buy GM products no matter where they’re made.
Good for you, I won’t be buying one. Never thought I would shop elsewhere but I am.
Most consumers don’t realize that a lot of consumer goods like jewelry, clothes, and appliances are not made in the United States and have far more profit market up in them, compared to vehicles like the Buick Envision.
Jewelery, clothes, and appliances do not cost $40,000
James Farrell: Well, let’s see here. So the start of Detroit and the big three going down can be attributed to several things. One of them? The fact that so many “American’s” decided to sell out and purchase Japanese and German brand cars. Did the big three makes some mistakes over the year? Yes. But anyone ignoring the reality of people in this country buying so many import brands vehicles, thus putting us where we are today. It’s cause and effect.
We drive sedans and Denali’s. I have no use for a cross over soccer mom ride. Buick has left me and my demographic. Leaving us with foreign vehicles and a couple of Cadillacs to choose from. Not much of a selection. We wind up holding onto a La Crosse longer than usual in hopes they regain some vision and sense. With no confidence that will occur. Surely a domestic manufacturer would like to sell some quality vehicles to interested buyers. Really missing Oldsmobile and Pontiac variety at this point.
Well I don’t think you’d have to wait much longer, the new Buick EV’s will be good. If EV isn’t your thing then good luck as many other manufacturers are opting for EV
I too miss Pontiac. I get why they canned it but the cars appealed to me in a way Chevys didn’t.
Not buying a Chinese vehicle…period. IMO, gm is targeting women because they may not care where it’s built, while most men do care where its built. Also, the age brackets for the same reason. I’m above that age and my answer is in the first sentence.
I will get slammed for my opinion… Good thing this isn’t Twitter or I could be band from speaking my opinion… lol
The corporation controls where they locate ( China ) for cheap labour but the little people in countries ilke US and Canada, We control what we buy, so we really do have control the of corporations, GM Canada was 1 # in sales, and when they shut down the Great Oshawa plant, their sales droped.
V E R R R Y attractive. Right up my alley! When my 2021 Enclave is due for a replacement in a couple years or so I could definitely see myself in one of these . . .oops . . . China!? . . . never mind.
Do we really need the Huge F-35 jet engine air intakes on this family hauler? Turns me off! I’ll buy a GMC Acadia instead.
i agree. the overall design looks nice but those intakes are a distraction. they are too prominent especially with the chrome trim.
Cars manufactured in China 2019 26 million, USA 11 million all brands. Designed in the United States of America is stated on the Envision’s Monroney. Purchasing a Chinese manufactured car is inevitable. Resistance is futile.
When a company puts a euthanism like”designed in the USA” or “packaged in the USA,” I feel it is patronizing and the company is trying to hide the fact said product is built in communist China, and it is a good way for me to not buy that product.
VW had beautiful success with the Passat once they redesigned it for the US market and dedicating a whole factory in Chattanooga TN. Eventually VW brought the Atlas to America as well…….. they rock sales numbers….GM can’t find the sauce I guess
The problem i have with this vehicle is it is way overpriced. You can get an Enclave for a little bit more. Hell, a loaded Traverse is cheaper. The Blazer is a close size comparison, and it too is way overpriced. But, it’s the size that appeals to most customers, so they charge more.
A fully loaded Envision Avenir is 47k, a fully loaded Enclave Avenir is 60k… yes a fully loaded model in one class may cost as much as a base model of another. It all depends on what you want….
I’ve been buying the Acadia/Enclaves since 2008. You can easily get them almost fully loaded for around 48-50k. Acadia would likely be an SLT1/2 not sure what they are now as the last one I had was a 2012. The enclave premium or whatever it is a step below avenir with 20/21’s and all the bells and whistles as well. I almost picked up a black on black redline traverse instead in 2018 and it was virtually the same price with close to everything the high country or avenir had at the time. Sticker was around 50k on that cheaper than my enclave which I walked out paying around 48k. My area also seems to be pricier on vehicles (South Florida) as well. If I moved back to Illinois (good lord NO!) they’re much cheaper. Think my folks paid around 53-55k for their avenir up there loaded.
The thing that ticks me off the most besides the made in china versions is that Buick lowered the warranty to a three year from a four year. What’s the point now if I get the same as a chevy? They even lowered the CPO warranties as well such as Cadillac from two to one. I was eyeballing an escalade esv or one of the XT6 models that are similar to the newer baby acadias (I think?). The other major gripe I’ve had since I traded in the 2015 enclave is the 2018 or newer models have no interior mood lighting. I liked the useless feature. I’m still scratching my head too since I can order a redline chevy or XT model blacked out or in a grey with better wheel options than I can with the enclave. Enclave would look great if I could get those options. Chrome trim and bits DO NOT belong on newer cars period. They just can’t pull it off like the classics with actual design. All I see is plastic and aluminium with fake chrome stickers.
Looks like a very nice car and something I will be in the market for at the end of this calendar year, but Chinese manufacture is a deal-breaker for me.
Build it in the U.S.
Man, this Envision is such a fantastic looking vehicle both inside and out. But I absolutely love the one in the dark maroon color. Love the painted moldings around the wheels and around the bottom. Just a total hit.
Dear Jonathan Lopez,
Your article is great. However, your specs are off on the Buick Envision. The Buick.com website states 228 horsepower and 258 lb ft of torque on regular gasoline with the 2.0 LSY engine. The specs that you are mentioning- 237 horsepower and 258 lb ft of torque applies to the 2021 Cadillac XT4 model with the 2.0 LSY engine with Premium Gasoline recommended.
GM does not care if you don’t buy these. The bulk of Buick sales will be in China 🇨🇳 that is why they are being built in China. They figure you will either buy Chevy or pay more for a Cadillac branded product. The quality of the XT4 will not be as good as this but hey who cares if you reject Chinese built units. But yet you will go buy Korean built. Or hey you go out and buy Computers and TV’s that are built in China. You do realize by now that every bit of electronics you buy are made in China. Even all of those electronic chips that Domestic manufactures use in American cars, trucks, and SUV’S are all built in China. Why you may ask well they only have to pay $1 to $3 an hour. Makes for 80% profits versus 20%.
So they will just ignore the America only consumers so you can go buy another brand that is hiding 80% of the components being made in China. Even the Japanese and the Germans get there parts from China as do all American Manufacturers. Wake up and smell whats brewing in your morning coffee thats not even American Made. It’s grown in tropical climates. But hey with Global Warming that may change soon.
Dear Jonathan Lopez:
This is your 2nd Blog post on GM marketing the China made & imported Envision. Despite the MANY comments on the two posts about prospective Envision/ Buick customers NOT going to purchase a Chinese made vehicle for very VALID reasons, like the CCPs dispicable RECENT Human Rights record up to & including GENOCIDE accusations Sir, not to mention their continued unfair trade practices. Apparently, Mr. Lopez, you refuse or are unable to address the “elephant in the room” with Rob Petersen Buick “Marketing” Director about the “made in China” ISSUE here. Please respond to the many on this thread who would like an answer from GM as to why they continue to be stunning hypocrites IGNORING the horrific Chinese CCP Human Rights issues, while very publically responding IMMEDIATELY to EVERY recent “Social Justice” & “Systemic Racism” & ,”Climate Change” issue here in the USA. Is the China CCP controlling GM too?!!!?
Why are so many Americans not caring that this is built by our enemies the Chinese?
Ask Kiss my arse… doesn’t realize we can make our own decisions where to our goods. Not all electronic systems or parts are made in China….
However, to his point, the EV material to make the car batteries are fracked in China because the green folks outlawed it here in the US. Ask the Japanese car manufacturers that had pay more money or the line would still be shut down and Prius couldn’t be delivered.
My point to Kiss my Arse, you have a choice…
I’d prefer that this be built in the USA. I’m not “for” anything Chinese. But every time an article pops up on the Envision, we get every person crawling out from under the rocks crying about it being assembled in China. How many of you however, will endorse buying a Japanese product? I don’t care if it’s assembled in the states. This is a huge double standard and pathetic. If you are going to bash this for being assembled in China, then you sure better bash anything with a Japanese brand on it. If you don’t, you are a sell out.
Apparently, the only one “under the rocks” is you Berning. But alas you’re living in LaLa land. Voting to recall you’re asinine Gov soon??? Take a few minutes off of your heavy bloviating on the GM Authority site & Google “Chinese Genocide” & “Uighurs” to get up to speed. Then let us know what color your future imported CCP Envision will be. What performance package?? The CCP will be proud of your purchase. Send them a pic with you & the car.
MossmanMike: You obviously have a problem with understanding what you read. Don’t try to paint me as loving Chinese are whatever your attempting to (pathetically) do. Read what I said. I clearly stated where I stand on all this. The point being made is clear. Don’t come on here and attempt to show patriotism, but then be a sell out to other import brands. Especially the Japanese. All I’ve done is made the decision to stop reading stupid posts while shaking my head and instead to call out the double standards. If you think the Japanese are pure and clean, then you have been living under a rock.
Blockhead Berning: I “read” very well thank you. Quit explaining your “pathetic” self & elevate yourself, if you can, and head over to the “GM Loyalty” thread for some intelligent commentary & debate incl my post over there listing all the “imports” I’ve purchased in my life.
Ok, so you “read” very well. You obviously don’t comprehend that well I guess. You want to pick a fight on this and yet you are not understanding what I said above and what I’ve been saying for a long time. So that’s it. If you can’t get it, I’ll pass on commenting anything more with you.
I’m trying to pick a fight? No.
I am currently looking to replace a Volvo station wagon. Volvo is off the list as it is owned by Geely which is owned by China. The Envision was my next choice, but is manufactured in China. Then I considered the Equinox which doesn’t have many safety features as standard. Next considered was an XT4, but by the time I looked at the premium luxury model with needed equipment the price was too high even with my GM card $3500 price reduction. I finally settled on a Subaru Forester Touring, which has all the Bells and Whistles, standard, at a reasonable price. Yes, it is made in Japan and they did attack us in WWII, but times have changed and now they are our “friends”, are not polluting the air and are not abusing its’ workforce or citizens.
If GM had a Malibu Wagon made in the US, that would be the car for me.
Mark: I find your lack of logic disgusting. Make all the excuses you want to justify your disgusting purchase decision. You are a sell out.
Sorry, but we bought 2020 when our lease expired, b/c GM d/c’ed the LaCrosse in their infinite stupidity. That car was perfect for older & handicapped faithful buyers. Sadly, GM now is more interested in $$$ than social responsibility. My husband (40-year employee, never took a sick day) won all of their top R&D awards. Nearly 100 patents. He became handicapped in 2012. We have driven LaCrosses all these years. They no longer make a vehicle he can get into or out of. Worse, they do not care. He is sad….he gave them so much dedication & knowledge…
Tons of people here trashing the vehicle, because it’s made in China. Would they care if it was made in Germany? I’m pretty sure they were our enemy, killed millions of Jews, started 2 WW… but, let’s rag on the Envision. Go drive your Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, etc.
Can’t believe this has to be stated here. THE POINT of “boycotting” a vehicle “made in China” rn is PRECISELY why we don’t want to contribute economic resources to the NEXT Japan & the NEXT Germany which is EXACTLY where CCP China is headed. AND with a population FIVE times more than the USA they will blow away anything Hitler and HiroHito dared to do. They are already commiting Genocide on their own people. Can you say “Uyghurs”??? Do you have any critical thinking skills??? Do you have any morals??? Apparently, GM & Queen MaryB don’t. They only care about BLM & “systemic racism” & “Climate change” & selling Chinese Buicks. F those people in Hong Kong, Tibet, Taiwan, Uyghur “work” camps, Nike sweat shops etc. So enjoy that new imported CCP Envision. Ride around in it like a proud “Progressive” American hypocrite with the fake “woke” concern about “Equity” & minority rights of others.
What we have here is failure to communicate. You can present the Progressive majority of 2021 what would’ve not too long ago passed for sound logic all day long until you finally just give up realizing you might as well have said “Nih! Nih! Nih! Fuh! Fuh! Fuh! Gaah… Indians.” They don’t get it and they don’t care. I feel your pain; we’ve lost the fundamental dignity and unanimity that once empowered this country to stand head and shoulders above the rest… but they’d argue that, too.
Big: You have a great point. Well said.
Don’t pay attention the the obvious right-wing nutjob MossmanMike. It’s attempting to turn this into their next right wing site. It needs to crawl back under the pile of dung it came out from under.
I’m not buying it cos’ it costs too much.
