GMC Sierra 1500 MultiPro Tailgate Step Lights No Longer Available To Order

GMC dealers are no longer able to order MultiPro tailgate step lights for the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck, GM Authority has been informed by sources close to the matter.

The step lights are an LPO, or dealer-installed, accessory with the RPO code 63G, and they cost $200. They were first offered in January of 2021 for any GMC Sierra 1500 with the six-way configurable MultiPro tailgate, which is offered under the Multi-Flex name on the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado and will be standard fitment on a third GM pickup truck – the upcoming all-electric GMC Hummer EV – when it goes on sale in Edition 1 form in the fall of 2021.

In normal times, this would mean that the step lights would be offered on almost every Sierra 1500. As of last month, the MultiPro tailgate has been available as standard on nearly all trim levels (SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4 and Denali), and is a $595 option for the base Sierra.

The step lights are no longer available to order due to supplier constraints, and it’s unclear at the moment if they will be offered again during the 2021 model year, or even when the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 arrives, following a mid-cycle enhancement, or MCE. This is expected to happen in the third quarter of 2021.

Other supplier issues have reduced the list of available accessories for the Sierra 1500 as well. The pickup’s selection of assist step options was recently streamlined, while all dealer-installed 22-inch alloy wheels for the Sierra are also unavailable to order for the time being.

We are keeping a close eye on GM’s supplier constraint issues, and anything else which may affect the company and its customers, so be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more GMC Sierra 1500 news, GMC Sierra news, GMC news and constantly updated GM news coverage.

  1. At $200 not something I would buy from GM especially if not made in the U.S.
I would think the aftermarket would hop on this.

  2. I am so tired of hearing this phrase from GM ( SUPPLIER RESTRAINT ), GM needs to do a better job with getting the suppliers they choose to meet the demands of the contract they sign.

    1. There’s a little thing called “COVID” and it kind of has been affecting everybody in the world, if you haven’t noticed.

      1. @sam, Sam these suppliers won this contract over many other suppliers that also bided on being the supplier. -So in the future GM needs to scratch these suppliers off the tier one supplier chart. I am tired of hearing SUPPLIER RESTRAINT after you low ball and won a contract and now you can not fulfill the contract

  3. I miss when GM was a completely vertically integrated company and for the most part made all their own parts. In those days these would have been made by the Guide division.

  4. I wouldn’t have wanted that god awful tailgate in the first place let alone the over priced lights . I guess they think that they quit making flashlights too . Glad my 2021 chevy HD didn’t have it

    1. Same here, less money I will have to spend when it comes to replacement lights and their certainly not cheap these days!

    2. So instead the Chevrolet HD has a damned ugly front end. It’s butt ugly. Guess the design engineers were inspired by the Edsel

    3. lotta haters on that tailgate. To be honest that’s one of the things I like most about them. I actually think the standard tailgate look weird now.

      1. Lets face it the standard tailgate on these trucks might as well be a piece of barn tin they are light and flimsy and about as ugly, I’m afraid of putting anything heavy on it because I don’t know if it will hold the weight and ever shut right again Maybe instead of trying to push a tailgate that open forty ways for sunday they should start offering a extra heavy duty tailgate that would take some abuse I’d pay extra for that

  5. There are A LOT of options that lately are NOT AVAILABLE for different GM models. What is wrong? It is not the way to make money for any business when you are cutting instead of adding. Get your act together. A very disappointed customer.

    1. Its called bait and switch, which is illegal, but they “offer it” so when you show up to get it, its not available and they rely on your reluctance to go back to shop and get something else so you settle for what they do have! That why GM Launches vehicles with features and then removes them for year 2 or 3. People hear the fan-fair of the initial marketing year and when they go to buy its not available and many assume it is only on another model but in fact has been canceled! My 1997 Grand Prix GT that I flipped 6 times had a TON of features that were no longer offered on my 1999 GTP. They had removed glovebox lights, puddle lights, OnStar option, Tire Pressure monitor, among many others! While I loved both cars, the GTP always felt like a step down!

      1. So were the 6 flips all at one time or spread out over a few days?

  6. pretty soon you will have w/t looking trucks that say denalli or high country

  7. For Truck Buyers that managed for centuries to gain access to their truck bed without the use of lights, the world of Truck Owners will continue to push on without this feature, it certainly won’t be the end of the world for me and it will also result in a couple of a hundred bucks removed from the Price Tag for future customers.
