Competitive Sales Comparison

Chevy Equinox sales performance during Q4 2020 kept the model in the third-best-selling spot in the segment, with the Toyota RAV4 taking first and the Honda CR-V taking second.

The Equinox outsold all other contenders, including the Nissan Rogue (comprised of two models – the “regular” Rogue and Rogue Sport), Ford Escape (see running Ford Escape sales), Subaru Forester, Subaru Crosstrek, Mazda CX-5 (see running Mazda CX-5 sales), Jeep Cherokee, Hyundai Tucson, the Equinox’s corporate cousin – the GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales), Volkswagen Tiguan (see running VW Tiguan sales), Kia Sportage, Dodge Journey, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

Of the 16 models in the segment, 12 saw a decline in sales while only four – the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Crosstrek, Mazda CX-5, and Volkswagen Tigua – saw an uptick.

The Q3 2020 sales performance gives the Equinox a segment share of 11 percent, one percentage point less than what it held in Q4 2019. The performance places the Equinox behind the 18 and 14 percent commanded by the RAV4 and CR-V, respectively.

The compact mainstream crossover segment contracted 6.4 percent to 696,172 units in Q4 2020, meaning Equinox sales underperformed the segment average by a solid margin.

The GM Authority Take

The decline in Chevy Equinox sales during Q4 2020 follows a 15 percent decrease in Q3 2020, a nearly 41 percent drop in Q2 2020 and a 17 percent drop in Q1 2020, which in turn follows another decline during Q4 2019 as a result of the 40 day-long UAW strike. Before the five consecutive declines in sales volumes, Equinox sales posted their best-ever third quarter sales performance, preceded by its best-ever second quarter performance in Q2 2019, very healthy growth during Q1 2019, and a strong performance in Q4 2018.

We posit that Equinox sales continued to suffer in Q4 as a result of the following factors:

  1. Internal competition from two newer two-row Chevrolet crossovers – the all-new Chevy Trailblazer and the Chevy Blazer. The Trailblazer is smaller than the Equinox but offers many of the same features for less, while the Blazer is larger but also more expensive. In this regard, it’s possible that the Equinox is being “squeezed” from both ends by the newer and arguably more attractive Trailblazer and Blazer.
  2. Higher intensity of competition in the mainstream compact crossover space. For instance, one of the major changes to the vehicle for the 2021 model year was the deletion of the more powerful turbocharged 2.0L LTG engine. As a result, it’s possible that buyers looking for more power are buying rival offerings. Luckily, the 2022 Equinox is expected to address this issue by introducing the turbocharged 2.0L LSY engine as an option.

TOTAL -12.82% 104,743 120,152 -20.22% 357,014 447,518

It’s also worth noting that combining the 79,267 Chevy Equinox sales with the 25,476 deliveries of its corporate cousin and platform mate, the GMC Terrain, gives GM 104,743 combined deliveries in the compact crossover space. The result aren’t overly impressive, given that the RAV4 still sold more units than the Equinox and Terrain combined.

That said, the RAV4 is an all-new model while the Equinox has been around since the 2018 model year. GM recently revealed the mid-cycle refresh for the Equinox, which was originally set to arrive as the 2021 Chevy Equinox. However, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the refresh to the 2022 model year (see more on the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox). The updated model will include revised exterior styling, a new Equinox RS trim level, and a few other enhancements that should increase the crossover’s competitiveness.

Going forward, we expect Equinox sales to rebound once GM introduces the 2022 model year refresh.

  1. I just don’t understand how so many people can buy the Rav4 and CRV. Totally disgusting. I keep hoping that Chevrolet and GM can pull it off and knock those two turds off their high horse.

    1. Maybe because Toyota is the best, and the numbers show it over and over. The people that actually work on, and sell parts for them know.

      2. In no uncertain terms, the Rav4 is an ugly vehicle. (CRV isn’t far behind) But ugly vehicles and Toyota are synonymous. It’s like car buying has bought into the concept that was once in that song “If You Wanna Be Happy”. I don’t know if the lack of development or cost cutting has hamstrung the Equinox but IMO, GM would be better just giving up on the the GMC sister and putting all it’s efforts into just two translations of the body, those being the Envision and this. The Terrain just can’t get away from it’s hideous styling no matter how it tries.

    2. they probably don’t know about pearl harbor. that is the only plausible explanation.

      1. Pearl was nearly 80 years ago & now Japan is so good an ally that the US shares military technology with the nation.
Honda and Toyota make ugly SUVs but Honda still makes great looking sedans. This quarter’s sales slump was across the board, a few d certainly economic uncertainty surrounding Covid plays a role given the huge unemployment numbers.
Chevrolet is doing pretty well and it’s GMC that really disappoints me. There is a lot of competition with growth a Mazda and Subaru effecting every player.
Ford is currently dead! Jeep sad. GM should be happy at number 3!

    4. Speaking as a Chevy fan, current Chevy owner, and owner of a current model CRV, I can try to address your point:

I am not in love with driving the CRV. The seating position is a bit uncomfortable for me. And the infotainment unit is not intuitive. Those are my main two complaints about the CRV.

However, the CRV does do some things very well. The back seat has excellent legroom. The leather quality is very good. The cargo space is gigantic, especially compared to the Equinox (which I don’t own but have rented and did like). It is frankly amazing how large and useful the CRV’s cargo capacity is. Also, the CRV is agile and can be quite quick. My wife had to do some emergency maneuvering once to avoid a moron who ran a stop sign and said that she felt the CRV’s agility was what saved her. And while the CRV does have a CVT, it doesn’t drone and groan like the one in a Subaru Forester I test drove. And so far we don’t seem to have the oil dilution issue some CRV’s suffer from. And while the infotainment unit is a bit of a pain to use, the radio sound quality is quite good. Finally, aside from a dead battery once, it has been reliable. In short, the CRV is an excellent family vehicle.

  2. Even more disappointing since there have been loads of money given to buyers with rebates for at least six months.

I’ve driven a 2018 with the 2.0 turbo, will be turning trading it in very shortly. Been a very good reliable vehicle with some minor annoyances such as a drivers door speaker that caused the whole door panel to vibrate, with not very high volume; a light switch placement which was a magnet for catching a knee when getting out of the vehicle, and the major problem was the gas mileage of the 2.0 turbo. Recommended fuel is premium and mileage was no better than what I was getting in my CT6 3.0 or my current BMW M550 4.4 Twin Turbo V8. No I would not use regular gas because performance was only one step above average using premium. I had a 1.5 rental when a deer customized my vehicle and the performance in that vehicle was abysmal.

      2. Sell out ? Why? GM sold out years ago by letting Toyota take over. You show your automotive knowledge Dan by calling the best selling vehicles “turds”. Do you really think the rav and crv are turds? I guess you know better than the millions of people that buy these vehicles year after year.

Your comments on this site are just, you looking for gm guys on here to support and pump you up. Never mind obvious facts like the chart above. Stick to pushing old people into the finance booth.

  4. Living in a “GM Town” I am seeing many more new Blazer’s and Trailblazer’s than I am seeing Equinox’s, especially Blazer’s. I currently lease a 2019 RedLine Equinox with a 2.0L/9spd which goes back in 2022, and will probably be looking at leasing a new Blazer or the redesigned Traverse. I like my Equinox…it drives well and gets ok mileage, but the looks of the RedLine and the power from the 2.0L are what sold me on the model I chose. The 2022 Equinox RS looks really sharp, but they are cutting the power output on the 2.0L for next year, so I am not much of a fan of that. My wife was looking at keeping our Equinox after the lease, but she is starting to eye up the new Envision.

  6. The Equinox sucks. So much hard plastic in the interior, and Toyota and Honda have reliability practically built in right in their names. People want reliability, and GM is not. The whole Chevy brand is an exercise in GM cost-cutting.

    1. To own and work on a Toyota or Honda is to love one. Not perfect, but better reliability than gm. Anyone with a shred of auto industry experience knows this for the last 30 years.

  7. I have owned pretty much all brands. Their is nothing special about Toyota they run and like anything else they break down. Honestly my best vehicles have been Chevy or GMC pickups over the years.
