Competitive Sales Comparison (U.S.)

The rebound in Cadillac Escalade sales during the fourth quarter represents a strong performance following the 56 percent drop in Q3 2020. As such, the ‘lade remained the best-selling model in the full-size luxury SUV segment, with a dominant 45 percent segment share, meaning that the Escalade almost outsold all rivals combined, including:

  • Lincoln Navigator (see Lincoln Navigator sales), which came in second place with 5,042 deliveries for a 24 percent segment share
  • Infiniti QX80, which took third place with 4,832 deliveries and 23 percent segment share
  • Lexus LX, which came in last place with 1,636 deliveries and 9 percent segment share

The full-size luxury SUV segment expanded 1.6 percent to 20,964 units in Q4 2020, meaning that the 6 percent growth in Escalade sales outperformed the segment average. In fact, the Escalade’s performance represented the second-largest sales increase of all models in the segment, second only to the slow-selling Lexus offering.

Below, we’ve included sales figures for full-size luxury crossovers for the sake of reference. Though they differ mechanically from the aforementioned body-on-frame SUVs by having a unibody construction, they are typically cross-shopped and considered as alternatives. Currently, the only full-size luxury crossovers are the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and the new BMW  X7, though Audi is rumored to be working a future Q9.

The GM Authority Take

In addition to experiencing a healthy 6 percent growth, the Escalade nearly outsold all of its direct rivals on a combined basis during Q4 2020. We attribute the solid performance to healthy acceptance of the all-new, 2021 Escalade. However, inventory at the dealer level was extremely limited; as a result, sales could have been even higher.

2021 Cadillac Escalade

Pre-orders for the 2021 Escalade began on April 23rd and the all-new model has been rolling off the line at the GM Arlington Assembly plant starting in Q3 2020. Assuming no interruptions to production and supply, we expect Escalade sales to continue increasing substantially as availability of the all-new model improves in the medium-term future.

  1. It’s good to see the new Escalade doing well. If they want to keep the good vibes rolling they should seriously consider building an Escalade Blackwing!

    1. That’s all they’re missing a BW version, after that what’s the point of buying a X7 or GLS?.

  2. I am sure its a quality product, but every time I see one I just think that if you replaced the Cadillac crest with a bowtie, most people would think it was a Chevy.

  3. Saw one for the first time on the road this week, looked fantastic. It’s got the large and imposing look yet slightly understated, not overdone at all. And the dash looked very cool from what I could see as I drove by.

  4. Yeah, absolute domination, wohhoo! Of course only if you limit the segment to Navigator and two other obscure vehicles through (S)UV technicality. To me this is a sad news rather than happy. You would know what i mean If you look at the right behind the neck sales numbers for the traditional soccer mom mobile GLS and the born yesterday X7.

These vehicles until recently never considered on the same status level as Escalade but now they’re cornering the Escalade ,not because they’re more capable or better looking ,no only thanks to their brand names, which speaks volumes about the world we’re livin. And not to mention the fact that this list doesn’t even include the most cross-shopped vehicle with the Escalade which is Range Rover.

  5. Like I have always been saying. The Future is Tech and Interior Quality.
this is not shocking to me at all.

    1. I disagree, traditional Cadillac buyers are not techies, they are looking for luxury, that is the reason their sales has plummeted over the years. Their pursuit of the German brands has sent many former buyers to made buy the Japanese.

      1. Well, I fit *both* categories. Having worked in IT practically since its “birth” (80s), I can hardly wait to see the new tech innovations. But I want that luxury, too. When I was driving the STSs, I always wanted it in Sport mode. I have a lead foot… When those were phased out, we went to the Escalade. All it took was one test ride. Done & done. I’m trying to be patient as I await my 4th Platinum – but it isn’t easy. (Yes, they stay in Sport mode, too!) I’ve yet to see another SUV that could lure me away from my Escalade. My brother had a Range Rover. It was OK, but still not luxurious enough or roomy enough for me. We just agreed to disagree. 😂😂😂

  6. I sure would love to see the one we ordered – in OCT – in my driveway!! First, Radiant pkg constrained with release date “TBD” (to be determined) on the Luxury Premium Platinum Escalade. Now… no 22″ tires available for LPO pkgs (dealer installed) – only factory installed. How can you expect to sell cars w/no tires?? Our dealership isn’t even being allowed to submit the orders. At this rate, I may as well wait for a ’22, if they can find parts.

    1. The country is going through a global pandemic right now, GM is not exempt from production delays. Please be a little more patient. I’m sure you can understand a segment leader finally receiving its long awaited redesign, first orders may naturally experience some form of delay until supply can catch up to demand. Throw COVID-19 in there and a UAW strike and I can understand why deliveries are behind.

When Ford released the redesigned 2018 Navigator they reported they “couldn’t keep up with demand” for MONTHS despite being outsold by even the Infiniti QX80. According to the chart, that hasn’t even changed. They continue to be outsold by the much older Nissan.
