These days, car buyers typically want a vehicle that can do it all – haul cargo, go fast, be easy to drive, and everything in between. And while many seek those characteristics in the modern crossover segment, the Chevy El Camino was arguably one of the first models to offer such a combo. Which begs the question – what would a modern Chevy El Camino look like? Now, one digital artist has answered with the following rendering.
Coming to us from automotive artist Oscar Vargas, who posted his work to social media via the @wb.artist20 Instagram feed, this modern Chevy El Camino rendering looks to take after the third-generation Elco in terms of proportions and sizing, with a low, wide stance, rectangular body panels, a cab placed in the middle of the body, and a short bed in back.
However, to bring the Chevy El Camino rendering into the modern day, the artist then pulled styling from the latest fourth-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup truck, which was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Silverado’s influence is most obvious up front, where we find the Silvy’s telltale fascia design was squeezed down to a more car-like stature. This includes the Silverado’s horizontal headlamps, rectangular grille, and lower bumper section as well.
Moving into the sides, this modern Chevy El Camino rocks a set of fender flares with a rivet-style surround. There’s also a pickup/SUV-style shark fin antenna on the roof above the driver’s side door, as well as the Silverado’s sideview mirrors as well.
In the corners, the artist brought over a set of Remington wheels, a popular choice among pickup truck owners and off-roader enthusiasts, while wrapping the rollers in knobby tires that look ready for action in the dirt.
Finishing it off is a step up in the rear bumper, while the whole thing is covered in black paint.
Now, the question is – could something like this make a dent in the crossover segment?

GM engineers wasting time, money and resources as there’s simply no market for a vehicle like this unless it borrows heavily on some already existing vehicle.
This is not a GM deal and not even close.
This is a waste of time and money by GM Authority. At least I hope they are not spending much on this.
Again Stop with these bad renderings.
If you bring it back use the 70 to 73 body style with.moderen tech and also all wheel drive for winter weather and off road conditions if used for lite work.
Where does it say anything about GM being involved w/ this rendering?
Can’t you read? GM is not involved with the rendering of this, a digital artist is responsible. Quit believing everything you see on the internet. OMG
GM owns chevrolet.
If you would have used the Silverado diesel hood scoop and put the 67 Corvette stinger stripe on it.
I can’t believe that the Chevy truck legend did not include the El Camino but included the Tahoe and the Trailblazer
My 1967 El Camino 396 turbo jet
Royal plum black interior four-speed
Is one of the sharpest Chevy Trucks ever made.
Looks good now for the big question whats the price of this vehickle thats the deal brraker
GM was not involved. This was just some random guy squishing a pic of a Silvarado vertically and stretching it horizontally.
Gotta do better on that front end looks like my grandma’s moving van hell naw
Looks ugly , junk, go back to the real world with el camino thst were sport oriented!
In Australia Ford and Gm even Chrysler in the early days have been making this style of vehicle for seventy years running six and eight cylinders 350s 351s 308s 302s some in in very high speck GT form The HSV Holden Commodore Maloo set a record time for this type of vehicle around
the Nuremberg race track these vehicles have been the base vehicle for trades, transport, families over the years some even being imported to the US however GM in there infinite wisdom has closed GM Holden down and Ford no longer will build these for us so we are now seeing the damn ugly useless F Series Fords, Chev Silverados and Dodgy Rams being imported over to Australia to replace them and you guys seem to be getting excited about the possibility of something dear to our hearts that we have lost go figure that out!
It was a private artist having fun, not GM. Maybe actually read the article….and relax.
Holden ute is out there too, that’s real.
I will buy one I had 70 as 400 bb 525 hp t400 trans 10.35 sec@ 135 mpph in the quarter. I’m 70 and have a 08 avalanche with 385 hp . So sign me up I’ll be in line for one. Oh I had new 68 ss Chevelle 4 sp 396 man I’m old but if I had a new El Camino, I would asmile you couldn’t sand off with 60 grit sandpaper.
Se ve muy bonita vercion me gusta yo si lo compraria.
Build it, build it.
Make it relatively economical and practical, ie not a gas hog, lead sled, yank tank. A vehicle these days generally needs to be appealable in Europe, North America, and Asia. Read VW, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda,
STOP. seriously.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Bring back a retro styled chevelle and el Camino and blow away the sales numbers of the challenger. The Camaro is hideous and a fresh idea is desperately needed
omegatalon: I don’t think these are being done or money spent by GM. These are “renderings” from someone. I don’t care for them and think they are mostly stupid. However…..
This one looks really cool.
Bow tie or Flowtie placement in grill similar to the one that was so negative for the 2019 Camaro SS. Just Stop!!
Someone’s got too much spare time.
I think he’s selling stuff on his website. If it brings in the traffic, he has no reason to stop.
I had a bullet nose Ranchero. 240 6 banger, 3 on the tree, high 20s mpg, comfortable, and utilitarian. I’ve hoped Chevy or Ford would reintroduce this format, but with FWD for snow drivability. I might be old and out of it, but I also still like a good station wagon. I think it’s a reasonable gamble. Bring it !!
COOL 🆒
I had a 1968 El Camino with the 327 I’d love them to bring it
Too bad the Pontiac G8 ST died with Pontiac, the Holden inspired vehicles included the GTO, G8, SS and 5th gen Camaro. Since the 6th Camaro is built on the rwd Alpha platform along with the Caddy CT4 and CT5, why couldn’t an El Camino be added to the mix at Grand River??? It’s a no brainer, don’t wait until everybody else developes a sport truck, it was rumored GMC might get one after Pontiac was cancelled. Go for it, I would rather have one, than my Camaro. It’s more practice and functional!
I’d consider buying it. Can my dog fit in the front seat beside me?
With a really nice, comfortable 60-40 split bench, done in that iron tough nagahyde that Ford used in the mid 60s in their trucks…..you bet ! Dog would be very happy, and you could hose it off to clean. 🤐
Probably better your dog than your wife. Your dog won’t complain about the money you spent on one of these, haha!
Build it and I might just buy 2 of them.
Me two
Just stretch the Camaro into ElCamino form and it’s done. Give it some storage space behind the seats so you can recline and take a nap. Be sure the frame is extra strong in case somebody hauls home iron ore. Done.
Too much front and rear overhang.
Always wanted a Camino but they stopped making them while I had kids in car seats so wouldn’t have worked. Now that kids are gone can’t get em. Timing is everything. Was all set for the Pontiac version 10 years ago but that never happened. Might be a way to keep camaro going if based on that rwd platform? Can’t be ssr limited edition high priced type, though.
That thing is based on a 5th gen El Camino not a 3rd gen. Nice work on a rendering but no. That said the El Camino actually has a larger bed than many of the so called full sized trucks these days.
Maybe I should apply for that writer position on the site as I can actually identify GM vehicles.
Too much going on with the design clean it up a bit – looks like a Lego project. Get rid of the body sculpting and the fender flares with a rivet-style surround. Level off the belt line, remove the upswing on the quarter window. It would be interesting to see a new direction with the headlights, not a fan of the new trend of smaller headlights (especially on trucks).
Correct hideous front end
If actually made by GM it would be a 4 cylinder turbo, or electric.
If GM equipped it with the 2.7L dual volute motor, it would have 325 hp. I’d buy it.
The 70 elcamino styling was the best. If GM did a new build close to that style, alot of us would buy one. Dont really like the one pictured above though. Fender flares got to go. Needs much smoother lines like back then.
Nothing going to replace the old fashion of el Camino
I love El Caminos when I was a kid my Grandpa had one it was Cherry apple red with silver flakes and we love that car if they bring this back I would love to drive it in his honor
Who are these posters that think this is real? The posters who worried about price, options, whatever?
I think these “renderings” … fake car drawings … are a waste of time & space. Plus there are too many readers out there that cannot grasp the “concept” that this is “fake”, just like the video games they play in their parents’ basement.
in no way is image rendering useless, large scale companies and industries use them all the time to decide which product looks best and such. there’s a reason we had some ugly ass cars in the 60’s
The point of the El Camino was that it was a truck made from a recognizable car. Now if this guy can give us a rendering of a Chevelle SS, maybe with two electric motors, we’ll have a group of vehicles worth considering.
If the schmucks at GM would build one, especially if it were available with a 6-speed, 6.2L engine and AWD, I’d buy one tomorrow. As it is, I’ve been waiting seven weeks to find out if Cadillac will build me a CT4.
Front looks like a sandwich biscuit. A travesty of myriad designs.
Really? An El Camino with off road tires and bolt on fender flares? El Caminos are street vehicles not for off road. Give it a tribute early 70’s Chevelle front end and ditch the body sculpting.
I think it looks really GOOD. I lived through the El Camino and Ranchero times. I think it would be a Big Seller as long as it had a powerful Engine and kept the SS. Sure better than all those ugly looking SUV’s that ALL look the same.!
Trucks are hot seller discontinue the Camaro use the platform for a new El Camino which has a large following with the engine line up from 4 LS 6 RS, 8SS and 8ZL1, Auto and Standard Shift. Like the Bronco this model has been off the market for a so the sales maybe bigger than GM know. I had 1 in school I would buy another done right
Some say … it will never sell, I say …. a couple of “generations” of Elco owners will say different. I’d like Chevy to bring a reg cab, short box pickup back again in the 1500 series. The Bowtie guys are missing sales.
I had the the 1987 El Camino which was the last year. If you every drove one, you would have loved it. If they were to make another one i would definitely buy 1
I also would, and I agree with your take. If youve owned one, you would love it. I had Ranchero, and I called it ” A Gentlemans Truck”
Love it Build it! I’d buy it. Was my favorite when a teen. My son now loves it too. The renderings allow you to dream and think “what if”. Keep them coming. Ignore the haters. This is supposed to be fun!
I wonder why the artist passed up an opportunity to jump on the widebody bandwagon. 😉
Yes LOVE the Concept, Bring it back with a little more retro look and make it Electric.
I own an 83 I kinda like this I would buy one next to my Silverado
Must come with V8 option or V6 diesel
Bringing back old cars what’s newer looking bodies is is pointless why not bring back the old body styles just like they were but fiberglass they said they would still weigh more then all the junk on the market today never really understood why they always try to take older and newer and blending together my personal opinion every vehicle Chevrolet Ford anybody’s tried to do looks like crap people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on older vehicles in a storm why not reproduce them better steering better brakes upgrade all that crap in the old cars with the new cars keep the bodies old
Hey Joe the older style bodies were new once upon a time back then would you have longed for them to keep producing the older style instead of a new model, you may like to live in the past but some of us live for now and dream about the future
Why would you waste time on this ugly thing when you could bring back a Trans Am.or a Chevelle
Because (believe it or not)
not everyone wants a Trans Am or a Chevelle, where could you carry your dirt bike in the back of a Chevelle
Why are people talking about bringing back, this is just an individuals concept of something HE would like to see recreated in a more modern style I for one think that it doesn’t look half bad solid and tuff (so run me down for my opinion)
Don’t bother it’s ugly and a waste of time and money!!!! It’ll be like your defunct SSR.
Another classic being ruined , I own a 67 and 69 elco SS both years my wife and were born . So tired of classic cars being brought back with no character .
The UTE looks wayyyyy better! Now they build something like that in an affordable range and I just might buy American again.
The price and looks of my fantasy Corvette ran me away this last generation and so I’ll have to wait till the previous version drops in price before I buy.
GM I f you guys would only rebirth the 63 Vett with a few tweaks of course you guys would be on blast! These latest versions are too big for us short folks.
At least bring back another coup like the Cobalt the sport compacts are still selling like hot cakes.
I started in a 1070’s El Camino, had several. being that I worked for a Chevrolet Dealership. I also loved the Monte Carlo, wish they would bring them back, I would buy one. I own a 2020 Malibu RS. Shadow Gray Metallic, (Love It). also have a 2020, Equinox, Pacific Blue Metallic, my wife drives, she (Loves it).
Hey guys and gals I have a great idea!
Why don’t auto manufacturers take their best design from the 70’s and only make these for the rest of time it would make cars cheaper, no more paying for design studios, no more re tooling, spare parts would be cheaper but they would have to extend the options list though to give customers a greater chance to individualise there ride (i just fitted the widebody mud flaps whit the pink dots on them, hey that’s cool man) and best of all it would make the weekly shopping trip with kids more fun by playing the new parking lot game called which ones ours !!!!!!!
I’m from New York and Iam letting you know that that everyone that I know and speak to loves the late 60 and early 70 models and power from the big blocks good luck.
Can someone recommend Bondage Kits? Cheers xx
If today’s Ford Maverick unveiling proves anything, it’s that there’s evidence to prove there’s a market for Mid-size to compact pickups. GM could produce a regular cab compact pickup, the El Camino for Chevrolet and a crew cab compact pickup for GMC, Caballero… maybe? The Chevy could be for fleet WT and performance minded buyers and the GMC is the catch-all else! Make it happen GM!
The body I think looks ok as far as a new look but a 4 cyl or v6 just not gona cut it this thing needs a 6.2 or a 6.6 under the hood the loss of what an elcamino was I guess that’s another reason not many are seen in the road as well look at the Camaro it is rocking the streets if you gona bring back a classic bring the damn thing back right
I own a 1983 an had a 1978 SS I don’t think I would buy this. I have a 2020 Silverado & this El Camino is not the least bit appealing.. I have seen some Chevelle’s & Monte Carlo’s that have been done but this is a NO NO for me
Among the cars that I have owned are a Turbo 911, 2 Avantis, a Tiffany, a 70 Chevelle supercharged and nitrous 383 stroker and none of the have collected the positive comments as my 1986 El Camino Conquista that I am enjoying now…
