GMC MultiPro Tailgate Step Lights Introduced On Sierra 1500

Step lights are being introduced as a dealer-installed accessory (LPO) on the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck fitted with the GMC MultiPro tailgate. The RPO code is 63G.

There is good news and bad news about this. The bad news is that the step lights are not yet available due to constraints in the supply train.

The good news is that, once those constraints have been removed, the step lights will be suitable for almost every new GMC Sierra 1500. This would not have been the case during the 2019 model year, when the GMC MultiPro tailgate was introduced in a limited number of trim levels.

It would have been more the case, but not to the present extent, in the 2020 model year, when the tailgate was supplied as standard on the SLT, AT4 and Denali trim levels, as an option on the Crew Cab version of the Elevation and not at all on the entry-level Sierra and SLE.

But that was then and this is now. The GMC MultiPro tailgate is now standard on nearly every model in the Sierra 1500 line-up, and is a $595 option on the base Sierra. This increasing availability is no doubt due to the popularity of the innovative six-way configurable tailgate, which is also offered under the Multi-Flex name on the Chevrolet Silverado and will be standard fitment on yet another GM pickup truck, the upcoming all-electric GMC Hummer EV, which will go on sale in Edition 1 form in the fall of 2021.

The step lights appear in the Sierra 1500’s configurator on GMC’s website, but we emphasize once again that they are not yet available to ship. When this changes, they will cost $200.

  1. Maybe make a note that these are not compatible if you already have the kicker audio installed.
kinda obvious but I think it needs to be said. 🙂

    1. They aren’t? In the pic it looks like the speakers are on the inside and the lights on the outside. I’d rather have lights of the two options but it sure looks like there are four openings, two for each item.

      1. The kicker audio takes up 4 of the openings, 2 speakers and one control panel and one charge port for phones.

        1. They are compatible. You simply pop the led lights out of the coverings and get installed in the same slot as the kicker audio system. Checkout YouTube for video installations.

    2. That’s not correct. Look carefully. The Kicker audio module has cutouts above control panel where you can snap the LED modules out of this option and put them in. Look for manufacturer pictures of the tailgate audio option, a number of them have the lights installed.

      1. The lights look similar and they are part of the Kicker Audio package, they are just recessed to light up the controls and charger more than the steps.

        1. Again, incorrect. The default Kicker tailgate package has no lights at all. A little Google searching will show this instead of spreading misinformation.

          1. Every image I’ve seen with em had the lights… took some digging to find ones without.
Even looking up the system on GM parts websites had em with the lights.
            Well then.

Still I don’t think the point is to buy this option to swap the lights to the Kicker… it’s to expensive. The lights must come separately on their own.

            1. Go to the Kicker website and download the install guide for the tailgate audio, it’s for part 19417163 under OE.

It shows the holes, the “light kit delete plugs” and says on page 2 “Note: Light kits (GM part number: 84347814) can be purchased separately from any GM dealership.” That part number corresponds to the standard kit.

GM isn’t going to manage the logistics and cost of having two separate kits, when all they differ in is a cheap plastic surround piece that can be snapped off.

  2. 200 bucks for a couple of little lights, and a short wire. Really?

  3. Why on the Canyon Denali, can’t they put the same edccessories as they do on the Serria Denali, like
the tailgate with the lights, etc also the auto pull in mirrors, the electric rear sliding window, we pay
a big price, so make it fair, and put this stuff on the smaller truck.

    1. The Canyon is on an older platform that has a less capable electrical system as compared to the new T1 platform. That’s why many features don’t exist on the Canyon.

Hopefully the next model Canyon will remedy many of the electrical shortfalls of the current model.

  4. The GM accessories kicker tailgate streaker system is 100% not compatible with the tailgate lights. We have already received two sets of lights LPO’S that were ordered and delivered to our store.
