The Chevy Silverado is the best-selling full-size pickup truck among buyers aged from 18 to 34 in the U.S. The interesting statistic was revealed during a recent media call hosted by Chevrolet and attended by GM Authority.
It’s in the interests of manufacturers to have a young buyer demographic for their products because it increases the possibility that customers will hang around for decades, or at least until their needs change and they want to buy a different kind of vehicle. Healthy sales to younger buyers also suggests that the product will have a long life span and not require a radical change for some time to come.
One example of such a change would be the new mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette, while another would be the Chevy Silverado itself. Though not to the same extent as the Corvette, the truck was overhauled for the 2019 model year in the case of the Silverado 1500 and for the 2020 model year for the Silverado Heavy Duty (2500HD and 3500HD) models.
GM vs. Ford Full-Size Pickup Truck Sales - 2020 - USA
MODEL | YTD 20 / YTD 19 | YTD 20 | YTD 19 | YTD 20 SHARE | YTD 19 SHARE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
CHEVROLET SILVERADO | +3.21% | 594,094 | 575,600 | 36% | 34% |
GMC SIERRA | +8.91% | 253,016 | 232,323 | 15% | 14% |
FORD F-SERIES | -12.17% | 787,422 | 896,526 | 48% | 53% |
TOTAL | -4.10% | 1,634,532 | 1,704,449 |
In each case, the Chevy Silverado emerged with a more modern and aggressive appearance than on the previous generation. Though this was not welcomed by all, it seems to have worked. In 2020, the Chevy Silverado and its corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra, together outsold the Ford F-Series.
Though the F-Series was the best-selling nameplate of the three, its sales were down by 12 percent over 2019 levels with 787,422 deliveries. By comparison, sales of the Silverado and Sierra increased 3 and 9 percent, respectively, reaching a combined total of 847,110 units.
Though the performance of the F-Series was negatively affected by the transition to the new, 14th-generation F-150, the GM trucks didn’t have a particularly easy year as complications from the COVID-19 pandemic idled production of both vehicles for roughly two months.

I spent some time looking at a GMC and Chevy pickup trucks I really like the looks of the Denali… Incredibly the available gas tank is 26 gallons That is simply ridiculous.. So I’ll go with a ram with 33 gallons or most likely a Ford with 36 GM needs to change this and fast
I wish that mattered to me. I have to stop and pee after a half tank so wouldn’t matter if I had a 26 gallon tank or 100 gallon tank.
A 67 fortunately still not my issue my issue is enough gas to go to the camp or cabin and back without worrying about stopping
A lot of younger folks here don’t remember gas lines but I do when sitting on a line for 2 hours to get gas I don’t know if it’s coming back I hope you don’t but I prefer round trip fuel .
can always carry gas cans if needed/ so worried about it.
As a volunteer firefighter I’d prefer not to ride around with gas in the back of my truck unless absolutely necessary.. So my first choice at this time is to replace my Ford with another one and I’ll be pricing the Denali at the dealer also
if you carry gas in a can long distances use metal safety cans and use a heavy strap and secure them at the front of the box preferably inside a metal box
baby steps customs when there young and when there making bigger bucks H.Cs and LTZs. style is not for me when I need one I going to have to start over and find which GMC dealers I can abuse
Phenomenal sales numbers for a very tough year. First a strike then a shut down along with everyones complaints about the interior that hardly a design change. It seems to me that Ram took more sales from the F-150 than GM.
Many things have changed my friend. First GM is now counting trucks that they don’t build. GM is now counting all the way up to 6500 in sales numbers. The 4500-6500 trucks are built by Navistar with Isuzu engines and Allison transmissions. They are basically rebadged International trucks. Next GM was called out by automotive journalists for offering steep discounts. The same thing that Ram was called out for two years ago when they outsold Chevy. Just like when Ram was giving away trucks two years ago, they were also number one among this age group. Now Chevy gets the same award, Coincidence? GM also has more truck dealerships than Ford or Ram and Ford had to shut down factories to prepare for the new truck. To say it took all this to outsell Ford and Ram aint saying much at all.
Correction, they are designed by Gm,built at Navistar. And yes Navistar can badge them as there owe brand too. Another thing you need to clear up the Isuzu engine is the V8 Duramax built by GM.Isuzu and Gm designed the engine together back in the early 2000’s.
No, he is right. True, some of the engines are built by GM but the 4500 and up are designed and built by Isuzu.
No he’s not—only the straight 6 engines were built by Isuzu. Those engines in those trucks are V8 built by GM.
Do you the difference between a Straight6 and a V8?I can help you if you don’t.
That’s not correct either. The V8s are manufactured by DMAX Ltd. which is 40% owned by Isuzu.
The percentage is a lot smaller than that.GM bought back a fair chunk a while back
As far as I am concerned Chevrolet and GMC are the best and the easiest of all the trucks to fix once they have 300000 miles on them, which my son has on his 2000 Chevy pickup
So you think a lot of 18 to 34-year-olds are buying 4500, 5500, 6500 trucks? Interesting
So you don’t think they can? I’m pretty there are some people in this age group that can afford a new truck.
GM trucks are only going to be more impressive very soon.
What about us 50 some year olds who want a nice nice regular cab long bed? I would like a 1500 in the LT version with a regular cab long bed, I don’t like the ugly cheap looking front end on the work truck!
…. and how about Navigation in the LT so we 65+ drivers don’t have to be looking at a smart phone for directions!
Buy a road atlas and keep it behind the seat.
Sure, read a road atlas while I’m doing 75. Really?
Apple car play you scrub! its been in the trucks since 2016….. wake up
Um ,try pairing your up iPhone to your truck. It’s called technology. Directions will so up on your screen. Or how about On Star.
I don’t own anything with an “i” in front of its name. I’m strictly Android. Besides, I would still need to use the smart phone while driving. Not safe. Not legal in NY.
That’s funny because I just touch the screen.
never going to happen and even if they did it is not going to make financial sense. look at a dbl.cab and buy a trailer and when you go to the dealer they will tell you a crew cab we can get you in it cheaper and it will be worth more when you sell/trade.
Sorry. Don’t need a crew cab. Don’t need the extra space. Single, retired, and staying that way. If GM can’t meet my buying specifications, I won’t buy.
Agreed mike. I would love a Reg Cab Trail Boss… But GM has head up A$$ and does not give us what we want, so I will just go to another Name Brand {NOT GM}
Always been a Chevy/Gm guy till about 2 mos ago my almost paid for 2008 Z71 fuel acc management tore my lifters up at only 163,500 mi I’m out 8,000 dollars cause I decided to fix it . Replaced motor with jasper engine and it’s no good either. I’m out 8,000 dollars and I still have no wheels.
What was wrong with the jasper engine?
After only 3 weeks i had to to put a gallon of oil In it . The garage that’s doing it found that something didn’t seal and oil is going into cadaliac converters so luckily it has warranty and jasper is sending new cadallic converters along with another remanufacterd motor.
to all people who have bad AFM 5.3 put a low mileage 6.0 in it and find a tune shop to either put a economy or performance tune in it and turn off AFM
I just replaced it with another 5.3 Vortec . It came with a diablo3 tuner to turn off the AFM but that’s not the problem with new motor. The AFM was already deactivated In the new motor so the shop had to deactivate it in the computer
jasper probably sent a non afm 5.3 it is a jasper problem good luck to you sir
Yep non AFM
This just confirms what I have been trying to tell the people in Denial for months now. GM has been selling their trucks cheaper than Ram or Ford. When I was this age, I bought a Ram because they were cheaper than Chevy, GMC or Ford. Automotive journalists called out GM for for offering huge discounts last year. Some of you have selective memory, but in 2019 a lot of complained that Ram was offering huge discounts when they outsold Chevy. Coincidentally, that same year Ram was also number 1 for this age group. Some of you guys wouldn’t know a dubious award if it bit you. 🤦♂️
Wrong, for the 18-34 crowd, it’s well known that Ford is the most popular exactly because it’s the cheapest to acquire. It’s been this way for at least 15 years. Go check Craigslist for moderately used trucks, and check social media for lifted/customized trucks driven by this age group.
It’s well known that Ford has the largest amount of heavily discounted fleet sales and that brings broad availability of not only ex-fleet vehicles, but depresses used values.
Rams are the rarest, particularly in the HD line due to the cachet of the Cummins.
These numbers are looking at new car purchases which, given the cost of a new truck, only shows a minority of purchases by 18-34 year olds. People in this range are largely spending other people’s money (i.e. via their business) or they’re rich.
You missed one very important thing sir. We are talking about brand new truck sales not used.
None of the big three seperates fleet sales.
We are not talking about a particular trim.
Finally you get get back on topic and realize we are talking about new vehicle sales.
It took you a minute but you finally figured it out. 🤦♂️
Nope. You don’t understand at all. Read this carefully:
1. The average actual selling price of Ford trucks is the lowest due to large quantities of fleet sales.
2. This makes used Ford trucks cheap and readily available.
3. Most 18-34 year olds don’t have money to buy new trucks. They buy used. Then they end up with Fords.
4. The 18-34 year olds who do buy new trucks largely buy it with business money and deduct it.
5. Therefore, the dominance of the 18-34 year old buying new trucks has nothing to do with cost like you are wrongly stating.
If you don’t get it, read again.
Try again. GM authority and Ford authority both archive the incentives that are offered every month. I have been watching and GM offers more.
This article has to do with new trucks not used one.
You need to get back on topic.
You need to stop trying to move the goal post.
You need to comprehend the subject of the article.
Keep your hat on Nacho, Sept 2012 I bought my still owned and paid for 2012 Silverado. It was a so called end of the year close out. It’s nothing new, discounts have been going on since the early 1970’s when the term ” rebates” started. In 1994 Ford discounted the Taurus so steep to push sales and it achieved their goal, out sell #1 Honda Civic. It’s all good for the customer. I was 23 years old when I was able to afford my first new vehicle. Corvette was too expensive but I was in love with the Charger, 1/2 the cost of a Corvette. I’m glad the 18-34 age group can afford a new truck. They’ll be buying more GM products in the future and I’ll benefit with my GM stock.
I don’t think cheaper is a word I want to associate with my pickup. Maybe there are a hint here . I have had GM trucks and haven’t had any major problems at all. If you look at any car or truck brand, all of them have had issues at some point.
Currently pricing out a new Ford F-150 energy MC Denali with a $5,000 rebate on the Denali So right now they seem to be the cheapest cuz I priced the RAM too about the same as the Ford
Soon as I get back on track F150 with 5.0 for me unless GM would decide to make things right with me. This mess ruined my family’s Christmas and not including the 2020 being a a bad year anyway
I think ford has had issues with 5.0 lately.you are never going to get anywhere with GM on a 08 since they are pre-bankruptcy
Every car company has issues. I have had my Trail Boss with 5.3 for over a year and have no problem whatsoever. If I have been loyal to a certain brand you are going to say negative things about the other brands. Drive what you enjoy.
Great point! I believe that right now all of the big 3 build some pretty solid pickups. No machine designed and built by man is perfect. I saw find what you like and best suits your needs and budget and buy it. Room in the pool for everyone!
Like to see a hybred engine set up in a chevy silverado 1500 custom truck!
