GM’s Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra were the only full-size pickup trucks to gain market share in the U.S. in 2020. That much was stated by GM vice president and head of Chevrolet, Steve Hill in a recent media call attended by GM Authority.
The Chevy Silverado found 594,094 buyers last year, while the GMC Sierra achieved sales of 253,016 units. Despite complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, both figures are higher than they were for those vehicles in 2019. Furthermore, the total of 847,110 units exceeded the 787,422 of the Ford F-Series.

Hill’s claim is supported by the figure in the table above, which shows that the Silverado and Sierra took 25 percent and 11 percent of the market respectively, up from 23 percent and 9 percent in 2019. The Ford dropped from 36 percent to 34 percent and the Ram Pickup fell to 24 percent from 26 percent. The Toyota Tundra remained steady at 5 percent as did the Nissan Titan at one percent. Sales of all non-GM trucks were lower than they had been in the previous calendar year.

It should be noted that Ford introduced the 14th-generation of the F-150 during 2020. Combined with the COVID-19 situation, this will certainly have had a negative impact on sales volumes, and therefore market share.
But GM, like all manufacturers, had its troubles too. Hill also said that supplies of Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks was “tightly bound” due to the two-month break in production caused by the pandemic. All plants were closed in March, and restarted at reduced levels of output in late May.
“Not every facility will ramp up as fast as possible,” Philip Kienle, GM’s vice president of North American manufacturing said at the time. “Ideally, in a perfect world, by around June 15th, all of our facilities would be operating at their original capacity. But, again, I just give the caveat: market demand. We’re not going to override market demand.”
Without this interruption in supply, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra would also have sold in greater numbers. Whether they would have eaten into Ford’s market share to the same extent without the pandemic is, however, impossible to say.

I don’t see GM cutting ICE out of it’s trucks unless 70% + buyers choose so and congressional action, the Hummer is a good testbed without taking a bath on it’s profits. GM is pandering to Biden as they did with Trump months earlier.
GM really hit a home run with the TrailBoss and Custom trims. They are affordable trucks that appeal to customers that can afford them.
No doubt. I’m seeing double cab 4×4 customs with the v6 and rebates get the truck down to $32k.
Big changes are coming. If the electric trucks get sorted out and prove that they are a solid way to go then we will watch a steady erosion of ice sales.
Also, i think fluctuations in market share are quite normal. The overall trend say after 3 to 5 years are the stats that have value.
And again I say competition is where its at. Let GM Ford and Stellantis give it their best and that each of them cause the others to lie awake at nights to improve and innovate.

Well if they keep rolling back to the eight speed with all the problems sales will suffer. Tried to buy one last week. The website said I could have a 10 speed but when they submitted the order it got kicked back. The other footnote is GM sucks when it comes to towing lbs when compared to F150 and Ram. They need to step it up….not all of us by a truck because it is pretty.

it is tough to compare apples to apples since there is so many variations out there but according to trailer life towing guide using a popular configuration CC 4WD short bed – here are the highest numbers listed for each brand. So the Chevy is higher than the Ram and your comment is based on a 500 lb advantage for the Ford?

on a side note I guess the interiors are not as big a deal as the media thought? I for one don’t care for the huge screen in the RAM looks like a smudgefest to me
Didn’t they have the largest market share loss last year when they lost to Ram? Sounds like it was just a return back to normal. It’s all about the spin.
I don’t see spin. GM’s gains in 2020 are undeniable and I think the report presents all sides fairly.
They need to get the 10 speed out there more. Do that, refresh the interior in ’22 as I’ve heard, get some better front offset passenger crash test ratings, and you’ll have my consideration when I’m due for a truck in ’24 or so. If you care about the safety of the person in your passenger seat, I’d skip GM light duty trucks for the time being.
No one wants an electric truck yet, unless you live in the city and are okay with having a limited range. The battery technology simply isn’t up to par yet. Especially when towing. Electric vehicles inhibit long trips and the freedom of travel. No one believes in climate change unless you’re a schill. Battery’s are also bad for the environment. Think about it.
