General Motors won the full-size pickup wars during an extremely challenging 2020. The General sold a combined 847,110 units of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, 59,688 more than the 787,422 deliveries reported for the Ford F-Series range, which includes the F-150 as well as the Super Duty range.

Individually, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra saw 594,094 and 253,016 deliveries, respectively, during the 2020 calendar year. The results represent growth of 3 percent for the Silverado and 9 percent for the Sierra, for a cumulative growth just shy of 5 percent.
By comparison, the F-Series suffered a 12 percent decline in sales volume, mostly as a result of supply-related constraints brought about by the generational transition to the new, 14th-gen F-150.

Supply of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra “was tightly bound”, said GM Vice President of U.S. Sales, Service and Marketing, Steve Hill, during a conference call with the media attended by GM Authority. As such, it seems safe to conclude that sales volumes of the two GM pickups would have climbed even higher had supply been more favorable.
Overall GM sales decreased 12 percent to 2,547,339 units during the 2020 calendar year as the Detroit-based automaker along with the auto industry as a whole navigated a very difficult landscape stemming from challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. All automakers, including GM, faced shortages of key vehicles as production was idled in March until May. Pickup trucks were hit the hardest, creating a scarcity of the popular vehicles. GM production resumed on a limited basis in May with new procedures and processes in place designed to keep workers safe and plants operating.

GM should work better. Thats the main US segment.
Why did you exclude Sierra numbers from those amounts?
It’s called selective inclusion of facts. If the bigger picture doesn’t suit your narrative, simply zoom in further until the picture DOES fit your narrative. Boom.
Reminds me of the US main stream media.
Exactly right.
You weren’t supposed to notice.
You forgot 253,016 GMC trucks
So Chevy still sold more trucks then ’08?…
Gm needs a commercial now. “Best selling trucks for one year” muahahahh
Sierra 08′: 168,544
2020: 253,016 (+51%)
Why GM’s growth is smaller than Ford and RAM? Should’nt we care about it?
The “twins”, of which is where my purchase would have counted, and will on next purchase!
Ford will for sure soon be producing a new commercial claiming they are still selling more F-150’s “TRUCKS” then anyone else when the truth is that GM sold more “full size trucks” in a year that included not only a pandemic that cost millions of jobs but also a 40 strike!
Good show GM! 👍
Precisely.
To be fair, Ford had to shut down its factories for retooling. In fact, the last time the GM trucks outsold Ford was 6 years ago when Ford shut down the factories for the all new aluminium body.
Don’t forget they also had to ship thousands of the first production units of their new model to Detroit for inspection and correction of all defects.
GM having the slowest full-size truck growth over the past 12 years shouldn’t surprise anyone. They have been the least aggressive of the big 3 during that time period. I have been a loyal GM guy my whole life but it’s getting harder to stay that way. I really want to see GM get more aggressive and be a leader again. My comment may not be popular but it’s like GM has lost their focus. They seam to be putting all their eggs in the EV basket. They need to remember that combustible engine trucks are still the bread and butter of their business.
847,000 people completely disagreed with you in 2020.
It will be even more in 2021.
What makes it “harder” to stay GM loyal? They have the best trucks, the engines are very capable in the real world… what are you talking about?
Don’t get me wrong I want GM to succeed. Regardless of the strange year we call 2020 GM has lost a significant amount of market share over the years. An example of not being aggressive enough is the full-size off road market. The Trail Boss is a good first step but clearly not competitive with the Raptor or TRX. If the rumored ZRX is a true Raptor fighter I will eat my words. Unfortunately I don’t think it will be. It’s no secret that GM is also behind on their interior game. We will see what 22 brings for the 1500. They’re also getting behind on power output. The 6.6 Duramax is past due for a power bump as is the 5.3 and 6.2. I will give them props on the 3.0 Duramax. I know there is more to a truck than all these measures but those are a few examples. I’m a GM guy but if I feel they need to improve in certain areas I will say it. I’m not saying GM doesn’t build a nice truck because they do. What I’m saying is I want them to get as aggressive as the competition!
Chevy builds the ZR2 Bison which has beat the Raptor in every review I’ve seen. Why are you ignoring that?
I really like the ZR2 and will give GM it’s due props. That said it’s a completely different class of truck. I was specifically referring to the full-size segment.
I test drove a Colorado ZR2 Bison and in the end I could not justify the cost plus it just was not comfortable for me.
Day after Christmas just past I bought a Z71 Trailboss with the 6.2L for less than the ZR2 Bison and it is awesome. I love it.
I now have FOUR Chevy Z vehicles in the garage.
2021 LT Trailboss Z71 (day 1 owner)
2013 Camaro ZL1 6spd (day 1 owner)
2002 Chevy S10 ZR2 5spd (day 1 owner)
1999 Chevy Tahoe 2 door Z71. (ebay a couple years ago)
People like you continue to ride the fence claiming you’re a GM fan but in the same breathe insinuating that GM hasn’t been or currently are not focused enough, competitive enough, aggressive enough, or innovative enough for ppl to be a fan of. If that is the case why are they outselling their direct competition that are supposedly doing so much better in these areas? GM must be getting A LOT right, way more than they’re getting “wrong”! Otherwise, they wouldn’t have the best selling series of trucks in America for 2020!
I don’t care what anyone says about Brand loyalist (another example of Ford’s long list of proclamations claiming they’re the “leaders” in something), the majority just aren’t going to spend the same amount of their hard earned money on a “worse truck” solely because they’re “loyal to the Bow-Tie”. I’m not buying that.
You’re saying you want to see GM lead once again not realizing that you’re completely ignoring the fact that here they are LEADING. The title reads: “GM Trucks Outsell Ford F-Series In 2020”. They’re LEADING the segment in sales, yet another claim Ford Motors makes, has ALWAYS made, and will most likely continue to make in 2021 even though according to 2020’s YTD sales that statement simply is NOT true.
There’s a saying “you can make Statistics say anything you want.” They put a positive for GM but i look the numbers and see Ford extends its lead and RAM is catching up.
“but i look the numbers and see Ford extends its lead and RAM is catching up.”
Ford was down 12%. GM was up 5%.
Please explain how Ford “extended its lead.”
So, the header is basically false. Chevy and GMC didn’t sell more than Ford. GM did, as a whole.
GM wants to brag that they have 2 companies put together sold more than 1 company by itself. Not only did 2 companies TOGETHER sell more, but ONLY by 59,688 trucks.
Bravo GM for bragging on unfair examples. So pity that Ford and Ram out sold you guys (separately), that you you decide to make a 2 on 1 situation to make yourselves feel better.
This comment always comes up in these debates lol, and it makes me laugh every time. So for maybe the 500th time, let’s slowly work this one out.
Right now, there are 3 American corporations that build full-size pickup trucks. They are Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles…we could debate how “American” they really are all day long, but for the sake of time, let’s not). Okay, still with me, Jeremy?
Of these, Ford has their F Series line, GM has their SIlverado and Sierra lines, and FCA has their RAM line. Easy enough.
Now, when you count the sales of each corporation’s full-size trucks in 2020, GM has the most, followed by Ford, and then FCA. Read that line again one more time, slowly. Let it marinate for a bit in your mind, really think hard about what it means.
If Ford Motor Company still produced the Lincoln Blackwood, that truck would be included in their corporate sales…because it is under the corporate umbrella, is identical underneath to the F-150, and is a full-size truck.
However…they don’t.
By contrast, GM sells both the Sierra line and the Silverado line. Exact same truck underneath like the F-150 and Blackwood were. They are both under GM, and they are both full-size trucks, so…they both count towards GM sales!
Which…all together now!…”gives GM the 2020 full-size truck sales crown over Ford Motor and FCA!”
Is there anything I wasn’t crystal clear about that still puzzles you, my good man?
You call combining the sales of TWO separate companies to that of two DIVISIONS within ONE company a FAIR example? The Silverado and Sierra have the same bones!
Are you partying with quid pro “toke-toke” jo jo?
“General Motors Full Size Trucks Outsell Ford F-Series In 2020”
Does that work for you?
Pathetic explanation!
Only if you’re A Ford fan. Otherwise A reasonable brain would say, spot on!
Brands are not companies. There is no Chevrolet headquarters. There is no GMC truck plant. They’re are nothing more than logos, badges, and slightly different styling. Sierras and Silverados roll off the exact same production line in Fort Wayne, with the same engines, frames, axles, anf transmissions.
Those “ugly ,uninspiring, outdated interiors” worked out pretty good for the general. Btw, I happen to like plastic. Who wants cracked leather dashboards 10 years from now? I own a 02 Denali rearsteer ( for the last 15 years) only minor issues from the truck. People still on occasion come up a say ( is that one of those rear steers?) I just purchased a 2020 AT4. Bet I won’t get that 15 years from now.
Plastic doesn’t solve anything with cracking. Go ask a Ram owner.
You would probably get an honest response from them. Not so much from the Ford camp.
So GM Authority should be truthful and use its common reason, used countless times when describing pathetic performances by crummy GM vehicles:
“GM won the pick up wars, but Ford was crippled by Covid 19 supply issues and manufacturing set backs”…. Amazing how GM rules or GM was not able to dominate due to ________________ .
Manufacturing set backs?
Are you saying that a complete shutdown of production for 40 days (you know, that thing called a “union strike”) isn’t a “manufacturing set backs”?
Can I get a toke off that “Ford was crippled by Covid 19” pipe?
It’s almost like GM didn’t operate in the exact same country as Ford did under the exact same pandemic…crazy, right?
You knew the Ford fanboy excuses would be flying around in the comments the second you read the headline.
Boy, everyone is having their buttons pushed today. Thankfully we all seem to be having an appropriate bit of civility with our comments. We have not denigrated this to a road rage incident.
All the car companies are trying to figure out what direction to go for sales superiority, electric, turbo charging, supercharging, diesel, aluminum bodies, 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder, 8 cylinder. So many different ideas. In the 50s, 60s and 70s, most everyone had a Chevy, Dodge or Ford sedan or wagon. These vehicles all had rear wheel drive, full frames and V8 engines. They did everything, transport people, towed campers, boats and haul plywood. Then the supply of gas became an issue and we all decided we could do without the massive cars we were driving that were really pick up trucks without a bed. Lighter front wheel drive vehicles from foreign countries became all the rage. They did get better fuel mileage but they didn’t really work for most of America. The pickup because it was built like 60s American car was what we really needed. That’s why pick up trucks are so popular, they do real word work. The manufacturer that seems to not be trying to reinvent the wheel is GM. I think for the real world in America, full framed V8 engined rear wheel drive vehicles are the answer and GM in my opinion does that the best.
@quid pro Looks like you didn’t read.
The entire report is as truthful and transparent as can be. What your comment is doing is creating reasoning for the numbers. That reasoning could contain falsehoods.
Now, for some more background info:
1. Generally speaking everyone was impacted equally by COVID-19 as it relates to availability and supply.
2. What set Ford back wasn’t COVID, it was the generational change-over to the new F-150. And that’s exactly what the GM Authority report mentions. Direct quote from the article:
“By comparison, the F-Series suffered a 12 percent decline in sales volume, mostly as a result of supply-related constraints brought about by the generational transition to the new, 14th-gen F-150.”
It literally can’t be explained any more clearly. You’re welcome.
“a result of supply-related constraints brought about by the generational transition to the new (fill in the blank)”.
Sounds like either bad planning or an excuse because of it, have they not learned anything in their 118 years? Every single ̶c̶a̶r̶ truck “manufacture” has to go through the same transitions, have we not recently heard this excuse from Ford on past new model shortfalls?
Exactly. Ford, GM, and pretty much all OEMs need to figure out how to smooth out the dip in sales when generational changeover takes place.
Keep one plant making the old one and have one plant making the new one. Stupid that they haven’t already. If I were a shareholder, I’d be pissed.
GM did that during their last model change over….
GM had supply constrictions because of issues with suppliers. The windshields were defective during the start of production. Supposedly Ford had issues with production in 2014. Supposedly they ciuldn’t make the new 2015’s fast enough…. even though the 2015 F-150 was selling so strong they were offering over $10k off new 2015 F-150 2.7EB supercrew XLT’s by May 2015… some dealers had advertised $13k off that very configuration.
Even if there were no supply issues, sales would have dropped. People always wait when a new generation is about to launch.
Quid pro jo jo (like that name by the way 🤣) both Ford and GM were crippled by COVID, also for is crippled by a new truck rollout, and the years of 2019 & 2020 GM was crippled by the rollout of new half and HD truck lines. 2019 was rams year as they launched the new truck back in 2018 just ahead enough to kick off 2019 rolling. Every year also has different gas prices, or weather and political decisions that can sway slightly towards one company’s strengths, bring it cheaper trucks, more luxury trucks, more off-road capable, or fuel efficient. Honestly winning a “sales war” by a couple thousand in a market that each company almost sells a million a year is honestly a stalemate. The big 3 all make great trucks. The real takeaway here is Nissan and Toyota suck at trucks.
The total number of trucks sold are by personal use only or do they also include the trucks that big businesses buy as well?
Big business has always been larger percent of Ford sales then either GM or Dodge!
Correct, they made a statement that Ford sells at barebones profits on municipal sales in order to keep plants busy! Hmm…. sounds like somebody wants to stay #1 at all costs. Didn’t work this time did it?
Gmc chevy doesn’t matter they are made in the same place and outsold ford
Fix the sh$tty interiors GM!
It’s all the same s–t
Gm was also hampered by a union strike. Ford and Dodge weren’t!
A Silverado ad still can’t say “best selling pickup”, and neither can a Sierra ad. And they don’t make commercials for GM as a corporation. So Ford can and will say that the F-150 is the best-selling truck for the 45th year in a row or whatever it is now. For whatever that is worth in marketing and sales, Ford yet again will have that claim, Chevy and GMC won’t. Maybe GM should start doing some GM Trucks marketing.
They can. Just say “America’s best-selling family of trucks” and put an asterisk that says “family includes GM products”. Manufacturers do this all the time when they claim a vehicle has the “best” or “only” of something, they exclude their own brands.
Example: the 2020 Silverado HD press release says “…along with an available, head-up display — something the competition does not offer (excludes other GM vehicles)”
To all those crying about Ford selling more. Bottom line, if GMC did not exist, Chevrolet’s total sales for Silverado would be at 847,110, beating Ford’s 787,422 total.
2020 GM trucks (Sierra & Silverado)are the most beautiful trucks ever.
GM has to market both GMC and Chevrolet brand trucks. William Crapo Durant was forced out of GM, and regained control by buying the Rapid truck company from the Grabowski brothers. He then regained control of GM using the rapid motor company as leverage. The book that I read on it used the name Grabowski Motor Company that Durant bought, and turned it into GMC truck division. Also in the same book , truck production, year by year was quoted. I compared Chevy and Ford production, year by year, and as I remember,Chevrolet outsold Ford for 32? straight years, ending in the 70’s when Ford got tired of being outsold and built an additional truck plant. About the same time they started bull$hittng the world with their built Ford tough slogan. On the problem of GM truck leadership, blame GM upper management and the bean counters. I blame the woman in charge. Hey Mary, spend some money and bring GM back to it’s former glory. If the Dura Max needs an internal upgrade, just do it.
This is what happens when a once proud company is reduced to selling vehicles like their selling purses or perfume. This has always been a Chevrolet vs Ford battle. As a Chevrolet truck owner for the past thirty five years it saddens me to see the dumbing down of GM. In 1978 Chevrolet alone sold 1.3 million trucks.
Alex Luft and GM want you to think these are great numbers. I think it’s rather embarrassing you have to combine two truck lines to compete.
Wow, marketing the exact same truck under two entirely different brands and charging more for the GMC variants despite it being the exact same thing as the Chevy variants, making an absolute killing in profits…what a stupid business move!
Said no logical person ever.
They also sold 1,000,000 Oldsmobiles too…..
Its not 1978 anymore…..not for a long time.
Get a calendar.
A 1978 Chevrolet C/10 pick-up cost $4,500, a whole lot more af ̶f̶o̶r̶d̶able to the average consumer then then now. That and the fact todays vehicles are much more reliable, think points, condenser and plugs. would you go a whole year without breaking out the feeler gauge?
Does anyone not know what is or have ever seen a feeler gauge, when’s the last time or has anyone never changed a spark plug? It all started with the solid-state ignition and will soon end with the solid-state car (truck).
Then how often will we replace our vehicles and how many will the manufacturers sell a year?
This is the first time in five years that the Silverado and Sierra combined to outsell the F-150. Just like last time, it comes when Ford has to shutdown factories for a change over. Also, Ford stops counting at the F-450 not F-550. Not sure how to feel about this considering GM has two different brands, more dealerships and Ford has been down for a retooling.
“Also, Ford stops counting at the F-450 not F-550.”
I confirmed with Ford directly that this is not the case a while ago. Heavy Trucks includes F-650 and F-750, while everything below that is included in F-Series.
Alex, you really need to double check that. Anyway, it should also be pointed out that GM was called out by the press for offering steep discounts this year, especially in the first quarter. This is the same thing that staunch GM truck guys cried when Ram outsold Chevy last year. Per the Detroit Free Press, Ford’s average transaction price is 4k more than Chevy. Ford was also the stingiest with discounts. Looks like GM is selling their trucks a lot cheaper than Ford. Not sure that is good sir.
You are somewhat right with that comment. I just bought (2 weeks ago) a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Carbonpro for ~$11.5K off MSRP and about $1.5K more for my trade-in than I felt I should have got. Walking over to the Ford dealer (owned by same Westhills Auto Complex) I could get $6K off MSRP and $2K less for my trade-in not to mention the “we are better than all” all attitude they had. I had no loyalty to any brand. I personally thought the GMC Denali looked way better than the F150. Would I have liked an 12″ screen… sure. Are there some things I don’t like about the GMC, yes. But you know, that discount they gave me might make me consider buying another GMC truck in the future… So just maybe, they were buying a customer…
The total number of trucks sold are by personal use only or do they also include the trucks that big businesses buy as well?
The truth is it is not how many trucks you sell but how much you make off them! Anything else is just a pissing match.
GM has been highly profitable with their trucks for a long time.
I HATE read these articles. This is how GM and Ford allowed Japanese automotive companies to leap out in front of them in the ’80s and ’90s. Stop competing against just one another. You can run a lot faster if you stop looking over your shoulder at one another and focus on the entire industry.
This is not really news. There have been several years where the combined GM brands have outsold the single brand of Ford or RAM for that matter. But maintaining an entirely separate brand and distribution channel to gain 250k more sales of essentially the same product doesn’t seem like a sustainable or profitable business strategy. This will result at some point with GMC becoming the next Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Mercury or Plymouth. Why not combine the two brands under the Chevy umbrella, create a new trim line or model name under Chevy and incorporate the slightly different GMC look under that one consolidated brand. THat would give Chevy the bragging rights they covet and reduce the duplication of costs asssociated with marketing, dealer network and parts inventory. GMC is just a duplication of efforts and marketing masturbation at this point.
No, GMC pulls in a much higher ATP, the world looks at GMC as a premium brand and is willing to pay a higher premium for it.
The best way to word this article is to use platform names (GM large pickup platform————– outsold Ford F series platform)
Let’s get the USA-1 tags, T shirts and banners back in production for GM! 💪🏽
GM outsold Ford in full size pickups in the first quarter of 2020 and carried that lead all the way thru the year. When the plant in Canada opens later this year for 2022 production we will extend that lead.Denn
I was looking t market for 2020. combine the 3 of them owned 99% of the market. That cant be true. What happened to Ram? Perhaps I missed something but in any case I won’t be happy until Chevy alone out sell ford. Most likely not going to be happy in my life time if I am depending on that. Chances are the new Ford will retake the crown.
is there any truth to Chevy versus GMC 1500 Truck Frames being “better” for a GMC versus a Chevy? I am new to this forum if this has been discussed before or it is a stupid question, sorry.
The V6 Duramax Diesel is awesome. I have owned several 6.2L GMs that blew most Fords away other than Raptors, but the baby Durmax is plenty fast and it will average 40 MPG at 50 MPH which is important because Beijing Biden will triple gas prices.
Have to remember also that 2020 was the end of a generation for the F-150 and a pandemic was happening.
It’s been fairly hard to find a 2020 F-150 on dealer lots here in my section of NY.
So I guess if GM wants to say they beat Ford, go ahead just remember to put an asterisk next to the claim because there were a lot of reasons why they “won”.
Can someone recommend Theme Party Costumes? Cheers x
