General Motors has issued a product safety recall for certain examples of the 2020 model year Chevy 4500 Low Cab Forward commercial trucks for two separate issues related to a starter motor wire and coolant return hose/chassis harness.
The problem: in certain Chevrolet 4500 Low Cab Forward trucks equipped with the 6.6L L8T V8 gas engine, the positive cable connecting the battery to the starter may be too long. Depending on the installation positioning, the longer cable may be routed too close to the right-side exhaust pipe.
The second defect is related to the chassis harness and coolant return hose for the radiator reservoir. In certain vehicles, the chassis harness and return hose may chafe against the cab floor panel, which may damage the harness and/or coolant hose.
The hazards: over time, the heat from the exhaust pipe may cause the insulation in the power cable to deteriorate, which may expose the wires and lead to a short circuit. Damage to the cable may result in the engine being unable to start. Additionally, exposed wires can increase the risk of a “thermal event” that can potentially lead to a crash or fire.
With regard to the second defect, continued chafing could expose the chassis harness and coolant return hose. If this were to occur the chassis harness could short circuit and/or the coolant hose may leak. These issues may result in a no-start condition, engine stall or a thermal event that can increase the risk of a crash or fire.
The fix: dealers are instructed to adjust the starter motor cable away from the exhaust pipe and install retention parts and an edge protector to hold it in place. Dealers will also inspect and adjust the chassis harness and coolant return hose so they no longer chafe on the cab floor panel.
Affected components: positive starter motor power cable, chassis harness, radiator coolant return hose.
Affected vehicles:
- 2020 Chevy 4500 Low Cab Forward (with 6.6L L8T V8 engine)
