Cadillac Set A New Sales Record During 2020 In China

Although 2020 was truly difficult for the entire automotive industry and the vast majority of sectors of the world economy, General Motors achieved a very significant result with Cadillac over the past year in China, the luxury brand’s largest-volume market in the world. SAIC-GM, the General’s main joint venture in the Asian country, announced that Cadillac set a new sales record during 2020 in China.

Cadillac sales in China totaled 230,527 units for the entire 2020 calendar year, the highest sales figure the brand has recorded in the country since in entered it 17 years ago. At the same time, this result represents a healthy 8 percent increase over the 213,717 vehicles Cadillac delivered in 2019, its previous sales record in China.

As we covered in our GM China Q4 2020 sales report, Cadillac has an especially outstanding performance during the fourth quarter of last year, which drove this new sales record in the Asian country. In the last three months of 2020, it experienced the highest growth among the five brands that the company offers in China with 80,064 units sold, its best quarterly result to date.

In fact, the joint venture unusually revealed that during the month of December, Cadillac sold 27,524 vehicles in the Chinese market. That amount represents the highest monthly sales volume ever recorded by the brand in China, again reigniting Cadillac’s breakneck growth in the world’s largest auto market, where it set a new sales record for five consecutive years.

This new sales record in 2020 was fueled by the deployment of the freshest and most comprehensive product line in Cadillac’s history in China, with six locally built vehicles following a so-called “3+3” strategy comprised of three sedans and three crossovers: CT4, XT4, CT5, XT5, CT6 and XT6. Despite the challenges imposed by COVID-19, the addition of the new CT5, XT6 and CT4 helped the brand complete its first year covering all the main luxury segments of the Chinese market.

Since its local launch in early 2004, Cadillac has developed a growing level of acceptance in China, thanks to its legendary heritage admired by the local consumers, and its emphasis on creating vehicles with distinctive designs. Since 2016, the brand has accelerated its expansion by opening the Cadillac Jinqiao plant where today it manufactures all models for the Chinese market, as well as a growing number of exclusive distributors that now account for more than 320 dealers.
